It's fast and is basically a non-chain Panda Express. It is fast. They are options. The food tastes okay like any fried, breaded, fatty food will do. You get two items over rice for about $7, so it's one of the least expensive lunches around. The texture of the chicken makes me wonder whether it's real meat--it's hard to explain, but several of the pieces essentially gave me now chewing resistance. I also tried the paradise shrimp and it was okay. They have a credit card minimum of $8, which is just over the cost of a standard lunch meal. They have a small discount for late lunch or early lunch. It's actually a fairly comfortable and quit dining area in the main floor, and there's more seating on another floor. Having very few under $20 lunch options is a rare find down here in the Financial District of NYC. I found Yip's today and was pleasantly surprised. for $5.19, I filled up a small container with dumplings, two kinds of chicken, shrimp and green beans and it was pretty good. Sure some of the chicken may have been a tad overcooked but I get that at other Chinese restaurants in the area and paid a lot more for it. Yip's is a great value with decent food. Will definitely be back. Since their buffet price goes down after 3PM, I think I will be stopping in on my way home from work every now and again as well. read more

God awful!!!!! I thought that this was the Ho Yip Restaurant that has a four star rating on Yelp but instead it's just plain ol' Yip's and I got tricked. Granted, I'm deducting two stars from any of the reviews that I read of Financial District restaurants given my track record thus far. This is the only way to adequately gage just how horrendous the restaurants are in this area. My food was inedible and now that I've deducted the two stars that I know shouldn't have been there in the first place, I'm shuddering to think that I actually took a single bite. Couldn't have been any worse if a cockroach had strolled across my plate and waved hello to me. Gristle galore in the sesame chicken, lo mein that was bland, soggy, and waterlogged. Those noodles could have been months old and soaking in that sauce judging by the way they tasted. Quite easily the worst Chinese food I've ever had the displeasure of eating in my life. And my bad luck food streak in the Financial District continues... It's too bad NY hasn't adopted the A, B, and C grading system given by public health agencies rating the level of sanitation practiced by establishments like they do in Los Angeles. This place looks like Hell, or at least like it was hit by an arcane Sadness Bomb sent from there. Even taking into consideration that it is, after all, a Chinese takeout place, its grim visual squalor cannot be discounted. The basement buffet is especially daunting. It's dank, grimy, and all the food looks like it's been rolling around in oil since the day these dishes were originally invented. It seriously would not shock me to learn that all the cooks here are actually rats, just like Ratatouille, only in real life, so terrifyingly disgusting instead of cute. The first time I set foot in the basement, I almost immediately turned around and walked right back out. The second time, I picked up a piece of General Tso's chicken, but then accidentally caught a whiff of it so I put it back. And I am a person who will eat bad food for fun. That said, if you can screw up your bravery a bit, and try to ignore the urgent warnings that at least half your senses are hoarsely shrieking at you, the food's actually not that bad--or at least, not significantly worse than any other American Chinese grease pit. Choosiness is key--for instance, I avoid the Chow Fun, my usual go-to Chinese noodle, on account of its looking like the aftermath of some lady monster from the Grease Planet giving birth in a dirty sink, and opt for something significantly less oily, like Singapore noodles. Dry, fried items, like the whitefish and spicy garlic chicken, are also, somewhat counterintuitively, a good bet for avoiding grease, since they're not floating in oily liquid all day. And they're all pretty tasty. This one time, I found literally the last dumpling hiding behind the dipping-sauce tin it shared its tray with, and after a probably too-short thought process that pitted my WANT EAT THAT instincts against the probable odds of food poisoning, I tossed it into my plastic clamshell. (This is usually how that contest shakes out.) Despite its...pedigree, it wasn't too bad. I consider that last surviving dumpling to be pretty symbolic of Yip's food in general: probably offensive to your better instincts, but really not too shabby should you take the plunge. The other thing about Yip's, and this is important, is that it's a heck of a deal, especially considering the neighborhood: the basement buffet is $5.39 a pound (and a buck cheaper than that after 1:45PM, though the food here ages like the guy who drank from the wrong cup at the end of "Last Crusade"), and the more traditional restaurant area upstairs doles out the typical stir-fry entrees for under five bucks. This combined with my morbid affinity for ultra-depressing Chinese restaurants means that Yip's has been the source of a truly embarrassing number of sad, sad desk lunches for me. Then again, eating any Chinese food in my cubicle in the first place--Chinese food being one of those things that smells delicious if you're the one eating it, but just smells like farts to everyone else--means I obviously cleared any such self-consciousness hurdles long ago. read more

I remember a couple years back when a takeout dish used to cost $3.55 here, add a quarter for choosing 2 dishes, add a quarter for fried rice. They raised the prices to $3.75 in 2006 and am not sure what prices are at now (still under $5 I bet), but still a bargain if you don't mind unhealthy food. To give you an idea, one time I ordered chicken w/ broccoli and guess what I got? I bit into chicharrones in my sauce. FYI- Pig oil/bits are often disguised in low budget/quality Chinese food as a flavor enhancer along with MSG. They didn't even try to hide it. This place would definitely close down if they had to list the ingredients/calorie content of each dish. My guilty pleasure still has to be the sesame chicken and the spare rib tips w/ black bean sauce here. I work in the area, and Yip's is my go-to! Their lunch buffet is unbeatable -- if you go from 2:45pm-3:30pm, it's $4.99/lb which is exceptional, given that the average buffet at any given time in this area averages about $10/lb. The food is also very tasty! For those who aren't necessarily fond of buffet-style eats, they also have a full service dine-in and takeout service on the second floor. This place has been around since 1974, and is both a per order place, and Chinese buffet. This place is extremely cheap because they add tons of rice and sauces to all the dishes. It's a win win for both customer and business owner. They keep their cost low, you get lots of yummy food at a cheap price. I usually get the Beef Broccoli and rice. This place is a standard-fare Chinese fast-food restaurant. One of the most noticeable things about this place is that you order, be served and pay, within only a minute or two. There are two lines to stand in and options are pretty basic with the most familiar Chinese dishes precooked and served on a buffet-bar counter to serve to the busy lunch crowd. You also have the option between choice of white rice, fried rice, and I believe also lo mein. There are several types of soup, egg rolls, chicken wings, and the usual on the menu. Lines moved pretty quick, but for those really on the run, I was informed that the man on the right seems to move slightly faster than the one on the left. I came by here for lunch last Tuesday around 12:15pm with a coworker and decided to play it safe, so I ordered beef & broccoli over white rice. The rice was served first onto a normal-sized plate, portions were slightly larger than a bowl of rice ordered at a Chinese restaurant. The beef & broccoli was thrown on top all over the rice. The portions could have been bigger as I found it slightly on the not-so-generous side, but it gave me a good excuse to be eating less. My beef & broccoli came out to about $5, pretty cheap for lunch. There is quite a bit of seating available, with about ~15 tables on the first floor. If all the tables are occupied, you can walk to the back and walk up two flights of stairs to the second floor, which we did because it was pretty crowded, where another 15-20 tables are. (I believe there is also an elevator near the front entrance that you can take upstairs. The beef & broccoli was very typical here, thin slices of tender beef and broccoli that is cooked but still has a nice crunch to it, all cooked in a dark brown (soy/oyster-based) sauce. The white rice was ever so slightly mushy though still edible. I prefer my rice to be slightly on the dryer side. As we finished our meal, we noticed that the place seemed to get pretty quiet around 1pm as most of the work crowd seem to come around 12-1pm. In all, Yip's may do a justifiable job to whet your appetite for Chinese food, though do not expect anything fascinating. This is your typical Chinese take out restaurant with the familiar flavors at bargain prices. Not so bad during these hard economic times. read more

So I ordered that.. 5.75... with a huge chunk of rice but only err.. a few shrimps.. and 2 broccoli.. omg.. I guess the service varies with different server.. I was shocked when I received mine.. I love this place, my father put me on to it. I go in and get the chicken que over lo mein with "brown sauce" I think it's the same sauce they use in chicken and broccoli either ways it's great. I shared a plate with my kids who don't even like lo mein and they enjoyed themselves. The only thing that made me sad was I noticed just how many other options they had that I ignored while I worked in the area. There's a hot food serving area with seating and a buffet next door in the basement. I recommend the buffet. The choices are aplenty and its cheaper than the surrounding buffet options. I recommend the chicken with garlic, the chicken stuffed eggplant (unless you dont like eggplants, in that case dont talk to me), pepper beef, and of course fried dumplings. Nothing will surprise you but nothing really disappoints either, which is good enough for a Chinese takeout.
