No doubt that Yips is something of an institution. It certainly is much beloved by those of us who call NYC home. Why? The food is good, the portions are generous, and the price is right. On this occasion (I get this combo often), I had General Tao's Chicken and spare ribs over pork fried rice. So good! I really like these two thing together because the flavors, surprisingly, go quite well together. I added an egg roll to that. With duck sauce and hot mustard, it's particularly good; crispy on the outside and great veggies on the inside (and very large for an egg roll). When I used to work on Wall St. years ago, I was a regular there. Although I now work in midtown I still come here when I can. The hours are ridiculously limited (only open until 5, M-F), and they're leaving a fortune on the table by not staying open later. Regardless, I'll keep coming. Here are some of my favorites: The garlic shrimp is incredibly fresh, tender, and packed with garlicky goodness. The beef chow fun is absolutely delicious--super savory with that amazing smoky wok flavor. It actually reminds me a lot of Thai Pad See Ew. The curry chicken is rich, creamy, and just the right amount of spicy. Comforting and satisfying every single time. Everything on their menu is high quality and very reasonably priced, especially compared to other takeout or fast casual options in the area. After eating here regularly for years, I even asked them to cater a wedding, and the manager was fantastic. He gave me such a great deal simply because it was for a wedding--generous, thoughtful, and super professional. He made sure there was more than enough food for nearly 80 guests, and the flavors and quality did not disappoint. I ended up tipping an extra $50 because of how impressed I was by the service, food, and overall experience. I swung by for lunch today for the first time. After seeing them bring out steaming hot trays of Sesame Chicken and General Tso's Chicken from the kitchen, i decided to get their two sides special. I ordered their vegetable lo mein with string beans and General Tso's Chicken, and the order came out to $9.75. The food was solid. The meat was well-cooked and well-seasoned. The string beans had a nice flavor and crunch to them. I really enjoyed the lo mein, which was a nice surprise; in most dishes, the rice/noodles play background to the meat and vegetables but the lo mein tasted really good. I love Yip's. I'm a little biased I'll admit, but i genuinely believe it's one of the best Chinese takeout spots in all of NYC and it's really sad how there's so few of them left. In fact, I think this is actually the last one! Their menu has food items on it that you rarely find at your typical Chinese hood spot, like their spicy garlic chicken and shrimp?! My absolute favorites. I was very sad when they closed their Bay Ridge location down, it was the go to for a cheap, delicious and filling meal. They were always busy too, I'm not sure why they did that. Now it's just this beaver st location which highkey sucks cause they close at 5 which is when most people are just getting off of work. I left my job and took a quick trip back to the city on the ferry just to make it in time for their buffet. Another great feat about them. It was literally two minutes to 3:30 so not much was left, I decided to place an order at the actual restaurant upstairs. The shrimp and chicken were equally as good as I remembered. I also got a grape slush with lychee jelly from the little boba booth they have in the front. Wasn't my favorite but I think it was just a bad choice of flavor tbh, it was a tad too sweet for me and I've noticed boba spots don't do slushes well. I'll stick to teas next time. So, I have spent all kinds of money here, I've been to the buffet side of the restaurant, where you can get everything you want and then pay based on the pounds and the time. They offer this special prices after 1:45 and even more special after 2:45. I've been here at 1:00, where price is 7.89 per pound and have been here around 1:54, where the price is 6.99 per pound, and those $0.90 cents can really make a big difference. According to my coworkers, this place gets really busy around 2:45 pm. The food is DELICIOUS, well cooked. They have a huge amount of options, from chicken to a lot of seafood, beef, pork, SUSHIIIIIIII, sautéed options, different types of salad. You can't go wrong at Yips. I love buffets! As usual, I filled my container even though I knew I'd only eat half of it. I got a Hella lot of shrimp dishes. Most of it was pretty good. The kimchi was too fermented for me. Most of the chicken dishes were good too. The noodles were good & I loved the seaweed salad. I also loved the fish. It was so soft. Yip's is firmly in the middle of the road when it comes to Americanized Chinese. Everything I've gotten here is full of MSG and tastes average, with the exception of their veggie lo mein. It's terrible. So bad. Comically, I keep getting it and having my soul crushed. It's always soggy. There's a buffet-by-the-pound downstairs, and then a counter upstairs with seating and you can order a la carte. They now take credit cards, and I think there's a reasonable $8 minimum on that. Surprisingly this place really didn't change much, they redecorated and painted to make it less dingy on the stairway and the cafeteria style dining room is nice now. The food-by-the-pound is still down in the basement and they still have a special with soda & soup. Cheap eats! But I felt I was better then that (ha!), so I went upstairs to the individual (pre-cooked) rice dishes. Their selection is small compared to HO YIP but it was fresh, tasty and it was under $5 an order. I actually enjoy the meal. So old girl friends and old lunch places are not that scary to sit with. Located in the heart of the Financial District, Yip's offers made to order food upstairs and food court buffet style food downstairs. I work in the area and usually have a late lunch. I noticed that Yip's had a half off buffet discount after 2:45pm ($4.99/lb) and I was on board to try it out. I arrived at about 3:00pm on a Thursday and there was still a good amount of food being offered -- 3 kinda of noodles, 4 kinda of rice, a lot of meat entrees, a fair amount of vegetable dishes, and a whole row of cold salad bar offerings. I tried one of their chow mein offerings (yellow, thick egg noodles), what looked to be house fried rice with shrimp, some orange chicken and barbecue pork. Be advised that credit cards requires minimum of $8 so be prepared to buy a drink and candy if you're coming in during the special. IT TASTED JUST LIKE AN AMERICAN CHINESE FOOD RESTAURANT BACK IN MY HOMETOWN!!!! I have tried so many Americanized Chinese food places out in NYC and there is just this blandness I can't get over. Plain and simple, greasy, but somewhat delicioussssss Chinese food! I've been here a few times now to get take out and simply put, this is some of the greassiest"bootleg" Chinese food I have ever eaten! It's comparable to Ho Yips located in the financial district on Liberty Street, with a few differences. I consider Ho Yips the best "bootleg"/ "Americanized Chinese food restaurant I've ever been to. The first huge difference is the amount of starch, sauce and grease in Yips' platters. I've ordered both the Chicken with Chinese Mushroom and Chicken with Black Bean Sauce from the front and both contained a large amount of sauce that I did not see from Ho Yips. Ho Yips daily specials were saucy, but it was mostly contained within the ingredients of the special. Yips' daily specials had sauce seeping into the white rice and making it down to the bottom of the container. All of the rice that was in my platter was drowned in sauce. Honestly I prefer it like that, but I know some people don't like their rice moistened. A few smaller differences were that their containers were not plastic, but tin foil instead. Small gripe in that I prefer the plastic tupperwares just so that nothing spills. Finally, Yips' is actually still holding at $5 for a majority of their daily specials with white rice ($5.25 with pork fried rice), while Ho Yips has raised their prices a bit every few months to now $5.60 for most of their daily specials. Like Ho Yips, Yips' serves Chinatown style dishes, such as roast pork rices. The restaurant is not as attractive as Ho Yips either, although Ho Yips is not going to win any décor awards, but Yips is slightly "dingier". One more comment I will make is that if you would like to get food by weight, then you have to go downstairs instead as the upstairs and downstairs are separated. Since I don't work too far from here, this will ultimately be my choice of Chinese food in the area and it's not a bad substitute! read more

I go here for lunch sometimes and the food is pretty good. The people working here are polite enough and the seating areas are pretty decent. I like the view out the windows on the top seating areas. However, I had food here a week ago and broke out in a rash. I had no idea what was going on and went to the doctor who got me a test for allergies because something was in my food. It came back positive for mouse urine protein which makes sense. I give this place 4 stars because I do really like everything else. But you guys should really check for mice. read more

The buffet had a very good selection, everything was very clean (including the restroom), the price per pound ($6.89) was much less than the typical buffet costs (and it decreases significantly in mid-afternoon), the food was very tasty, and all of the employees were friendly. There are two seating areas (on the second and third floors), although we got the last free table at about 1:15 p.m. The one negative was the loud music, but that wouldn't dissuade me from returning. It's fast and is basically a non-chain Panda Express. It is fast. They are options. The food tastes okay like any fried, breaded, fatty food will do. You get two items over rice for about $7, so it's one of the least expensive lunches around. The texture of the chicken makes me wonder whether it's real meat--it's hard to explain, but several of the pieces essentially gave me now chewing resistance. I also tried the paradise shrimp and it was okay. They have a credit card minimum of $8, which is just over the cost of a standard lunch meal. They have a small discount for late lunch or early lunch. It's actually a fairly comfortable and quit dining area in the main floor, and there's more seating on another floor.
