In the past, when my mom came down to visit me, we took a photo of it. This mall has changed over the years. It used to have Sears, Herberger's, and Dayton's when I was a resident. All three have closed down since. JC Penney remains as one of the larger anchor stores. Dayton's became Marshall Fields, which is now Macy's. I wish that it were a Macy's when I lived here. I would have shopped at this store all the time! Macy's sells Kipling handbags, which is a brand that I adore. The area where Herberger's used to be has been replaced by a solid wall. I never shopped there, so the wall is fine with me! I didn't like shopping at Sears. I believe that Scheels will take over this spot later on this year. Many of the stores that I frequented at this mall are long gone. Yankee Candle is now a memory. However, Bath and Body Works is still alive and kicking, which made me so happy to recognize something. This mall has improved over the years. When I was here a decade ago, Barnes and Noble was new. It is strategically across from the food court, which is perfect to take a nap on a comfy chair at Barnes and Noble when you are in a food coma. I have had a meal at A&W, which is still there. I recently shopped at JC Penney. I like the Sephora section. The sports apparel section that features Minnesota teams was cheerful and had tons of variety. I took a breather and had a drink at Caribou Coffee, which is smack in the middle of the mall. It was nice. Finally, I visited Love from Minnesota. Here are a couple cons I've noted based off multiple visits: -General tso chicken quality is pretty marginal. -Several food trays have been empty, even right at noon (their busiest time), leaving you with less options to choose from - although you can wait for more to be made. -Fried rice has been overcooked multiple times. -Some items have been in warming tray so long that they get almost a rubbery texture, almost like they have been reheated multiple times (pad Thai noodles for example) Some pros: +Staff is awesome. You don't pay through it, but you are prompted to create an account and specify your phone number. You order takes roughly 25 minutes to complete, which was more than enough time for me to shop at Five Below before picking up my order. Their food caters to both Americans who may feel intimidated by Chinese food and, surprisingly, to Chinese folks who want authentic food. My pain point was seeing cream cheese rangoons (wontons) on the menu. First, I can't see my ancestors taking out a rectangle of Philadelphia cream cheese to replace the traditional pork filling in wontons. Second, I find it gross seeing them on a Chinese eatery menu that I will not touch them if they were the last food item available on this planet. My rant is over. The menu item that gave me a glimmer of hope for some authentic Chinese cuisine was the shrimp with lobster sauce. I went for it. I drove over to the eatery after I was done shopping and parked steps away from it. The restaurant is next to a radio station blasting country music. There are stairs and a ramp for those who require accessibility help. You can dine in. I saw a couple eating when I walked in. Dining spaces looked limited. I was immediately greeted by a woman. There were four women in the kitchen literally cooking up a storm. I said my name and she found my order that was already packed. I asked if this place accepted credit cards. They didn't have any fancy crimping. Each filling was packed full of flavourful pork filling. The garlic soy sauce worked well. I had roughly half of the two meals for dinner. Perhaps less than half because I ate all the dumplings. The shrimp with lobster sauce was so comforting. It reminded me of a Hong Kong-style dish where you know there's fried rice, but you can't see it because it's drenched in flavourful lobster sauce. The shrimp were perfectly done. I love barbequed pork in fried rice and it was fabulous. I liked the cubed carrots and pork, peas, onions, and more. I would get this dish again. It was delicious. The house lo mein was a winner. It had chicken, shrimp, barbequed pork, and veggies. The noodles were true lo mein ones. It was different having the lo mein paired with fried rice, but I didn't mind. It was such a carb-heavy, yummy meal. I had leftovers for lunch the following day. It was perfect staying in my hotel room working remotely and not having to think about what to get for lunch. The leftovers were equally as yummy a day later. It was a pleasant surprise taking a chance on New China and discovering that it offers authentic Chinese food. Just avoid the cream cheese appetizers. I understand that "dinner", time-wise, tends to mean different portion sizes in other contexts, different staffing levels, it's where you make your money unless you are a bar, etc. And in this case they broaden the menu slightly, adding sashimi as an option. I'm not a chef but I'm thinking that takes less labor to produce than about anything else. On the flip side of that, I'm sure sashimi, if someone was determined, is the fastest avenue for the restaurant to burn through material cost... if someone came in for three hours eating sashimi 5 pieces at a time and got away with it. That's the risk of running any all-you-can-eat offering - sometimes the bull, sometimes the horns. The food, cleanliness, staff etc is, without question, great.
