First time coming here and will be the last. I was completely put off by the lady cashier telling me to NOT forget to tip after a meal. This wasn't a friendly encounter but more of a demand, insisting customers MUST tip regardless of service. I thought it was rude! I still left a tip, as a sign of good gesture on my part, but left me not wanting to come back due to their demands and lack of understanding regarding discretionary tipping protocol. As for the food, I find the shrimp wonton soup was too salty. Had to wash it down with drinking lots of water from the after taste. Nothing worth remembering after this experience.
I was in the Chino Hills neighborhood. Yi Mei caught my eye. I dropped in as I was curious what it sells. Plenty of parking right up front. Good interior dining space. A couple patio tables outside. They are a classic food spot serving up traditional Taiwanese breakfast. Hot and cold foods, variety of snacks, and a good selection of drinks are offered. They even sell frozen dumplings and more. I first ordered a few items and paid for them at the counter. Btw, $20 minimum for credit/debit card use. Otherwise, cash only. I then sat at an open table to wait for my order. Wait time wasn't too long. The nice lady who took my order brought me my food when it was ready. Thank you Miss! + Almond Pastry, Pineapple Cake, Red Bean Pastry + Salty Rice Roll with Purple Rice, Daikon Cake with Egg + Large Soy Milk Cold + Sesame Balls I enjoyed the daikon cake with egg very much. Perfectly pan fried with a golden crispy outer crust and a pillowy soft interior. YUM! Please note the egg costs $1.75 extra. Soy milk was light and not too sweet. Salty rice roll was huge. It had lots of pork sung inside, but I'm not sure if the Chinese donut worked though. Purple rice was moist and chewy with a slightly sticky texture plus distinctly nutty and natural sweetness. I rather have more purple rice than pork sung. Sesame ball exterior was bouncy and soft... it needed a bit more red bean filling though. As for the pastries, they were a bit dry unfortunately. Before leaving, I got 3 more sesame balls because they were that good. A different lady helped me this time. I paid cash. She had the audacity to short change me by $0.91. At the time, I didn't check my change until I got to my car. I didn't bother to go back in because I was short on time. It's not about the money. It's the principle. I don't appreciate dishonesty at all. When you do business, do it with integrity always. Funny thing is that I had already put money in their tip jar before getting my food earlier. Maybe they wanted more tip so they decided to get it from my change LOL. Anyway, I was going to give them 1 star, but since the first lady was nice to me and a few of their food items were good, I bumped it up to 2 stars. I hope the owner reads this review. It's a shame they have an employee who is greedy and is cheating their customers. Will I be back? I will not. Thanks, but no thanks. Good luck Yi Mei!
This location has plenty of indoor seating, and I noticed a few picnic tables outside as well. We didn't come during breakfast, so it was relatively quiet when we stopped by. We ordered the fan tuan with white rice, XLBs, radish cake, rolled omelet, and pork chop plate. Some dishes were better than others. My fan tuan was a bit dry, and like another Yelper mentioned, they also offer it with purple rice -- I didn't realize that was an option, so maybe I'll try that next time. The XLBs were okay, while the radish cake and rolled omelet were good, especially with the garlic sauce they provided. Next time, I think the rice plate might be a safer bet since the rice and meat looked fresher and less dry than the fan tuan. Overall, the space is pretty roomy when it isn't crowded, and it's definitely cleaner and more modern than the location in HK Plaza in Rowland Heights.
This is my first ever visit to Chino Hills location. Yi Mei started with a tiny corner restaurant within HK supermarket in Rowland Heights years ago. They have since expanded to San Gabriel, Chino Hills, Monrovia. Chino Hills location is the newer one with modern decor, clean and seems to offer more items. It offers plenty of seats. Service is friendly, but they are very shorthanded. The kitchen and counter will have to help clean up. It's around 9am, I ordered iced soy milk which is premade, you just grab from refrigerator. It tastes good, but fairly standard. I think hot is the way to go for fresh ones. And for breakfast I picked salty rice ball with pickled vegetable; for $7.50 this is more traditional type. And more expensive. It's wrapped with soft and warm glutinous rice, crispy chinese donuts, pork floss, preserved mustard greens(extra cost), preserved radish. Taste is more savory. They offer and push for purple rice type, I will try it next time. My suggestions are to install order kiosks at all locations. And have help with cleanup and other tasks of location is busy. I didn't have picture of inside with tables as the tables are still not clean yet except for my tiny table.
Had a super craving for a, "Fan Tuan," or Rice Roll and looked up for something reliable that's relatively close by. Glad I found this location and got my Fan Tuan! I got it with the purple rice for a slightly healthier alternative than the standard white rice. The purple rice is 50 cents more, but definitely worth it. The roll itself came with the Chinese Doughnut, Pork Rousung, or dry shredded pork, and the pickled vegetables. The roll was totally delicious and was a great snack to carry around. The regular roll is $6.75 before tax. They have a lot of frozen and refrigerated items, that includes frozen dumplings and chilled soy milk. They also have a lunch menu here of different Taiwanese-style soups and rice plates. Will have to try it next time. They accept cards here with a $20 minimum purchase, or just bring cash. Plenty of parking outside.
We passed this place often but just didn't think to try and now we are glad we did. We placed our order at the register and they brought the food to you. Simple setup. You can also purchase other pastry items from the table. Or take home items from the fridge/freezer, like dumplings, pig ear, baos, etc. The lady at the register was very nice and recommended we try to the hot soy milk which we did because it reminded me of my dad because that was his favorite breakfast item. We enjoyed everything we ordered and will be back again. - Hot soy milk (not too sweet): 5/5 - Chinese donut - fluffy: 5/5 - Rice roll - we split it and it was very filling. We customized it and added eggs and Taiwanese sausage. I would prefer the purple rice but my daughter is purest: 5/5 - Beef and Tendon noodle soup - good but just a bit too salty. Glad we had the soy milk to soften the palate.
We got the purple veggie rice roll and the green onion pancake (i think they gave us the egg omelet instead; it was delicious regardless). The veggie rice roll came with pickled vegetables, which gave a nice crunch and spicy flavor to the roll, and youtiao (chinese donut). I understand that we got the veggie rice roll, but I do think that it was missing some protein or something. Would love a veggie meat or even just tofu inside, but I still really loved it. The green onion pancake/egg omelet was absolutely divine. It tasted so decadent, and I love how it came with youtiao inside. The server was nice, and answered all our questions. There was a bit of a wait though. There's a lot of seating inside. Do note that they only take card for orders above $20.

Want to test your pallet and try something new! So fun and unique if you usually eat American style breakfast. Order one of everything and be shocked at how low your bill is. We cheated and got Starbucks next door because, you know, we needed coffee with breakfast.
Came here for the rice rolls early morning. Took 15 minutes for them to make it and they require minimum $20 spend to use credit card. Spacious restaurant with seats inside and outside. They have pastries, other Taiwanese breakfast items, soy milk, and frozen items here. I got the salty purple rice rolls and it was pretty big. Came with crispy Chinese donut in the middle with some pork floss. Good item for some carbs. Option to add protein in it. Egg or beef. Soymilk was ok. Got sweetened hot soy milk but they didn't mix it leaving it sweet on the bottom. Looks like they have daily deals for select items depending on the day of the week. Was hoping for a quick and easy pick up but took longer than expected for rice rolls early morning.
Food is good . The staff are very friendly . Small but comfortable and clean . Love their meat rice dumpling, soya bean milk and Chinese flat bread
I've been wanting to try this rice roll since I've seen it on TikTok! And it was pretty good I wish they weren't out of sausage so I could've added sausage to it. But it was very flavorful. The store had a section of refrigerators that had so many amazing taiwanese foods for purchase from dumplings to bao buns. So many things I wanted to buy them all. The restaurant was clean lots of seating on the inside. The service was mediocre not really helpful, definitely didn't get the warm welcoming feeling I have gotten in so many other restaurants.
Was missing and craving Taiwanese breakfast so we came to Yi Mei. Food came out fast. All of the staff were super sweet and friendly, they did not skimp on the rice roll. You have to add the pickles!! The radish cake with egg was so good and came with a delightful sauce. The salty soy milk brought me right back to Taiwan, make sure to add some vinegar and chili oil to spice it up. We could've went without the XLBs but they were pretty good as well. Will def be back soon!

We're regulars at the San Gabriel location, but this was our first time trying the Chino one -- and we were pleasantly surprised! Service was friendly and quick, and the place looked pretty clean overall. * Purple Rice Roll (4.5/5): I really liked the filling-to-rice ratio here. Some rice rolls have too much rice and get boring, but this one had a great balance of pork floss, Chinese donut, and Taiwanese pickles. I just wish the rice was a bit softer. * Taiwanese Tamale (5/5): This tasted just like the ones we had in Taiwan! Soft sticky rice with flavorful braised pork -- super comforting and delicious. * Fried Bread (4/5): Crispy outside and soft inside, very similar to what we've had in Vietnam, China, and Taiwan. Slightly on the dry side, but it would be perfect dipped in soy milk or paired with porridge. We'll definitely be coming back! read more

Came here for the first time expecting a traditional Taiwanese breakfast and some items were decent. Portion sizes were good. I ordered the fan tuan, which was made well, and it can be ordered with white or purple rice. The soy milk was delicious. The radish cake (luo bo gao) tasted fine but seemed to be deep fried rather than pan fried. The scallion pancake (chong you bing) was definitely deep fried (not traditional) and overcooked. Plenty of parking in the lot. Came on a Saturday morning so seating was full - you seat yourself. Under $20 is cash only. read more

Wow, I believe this place is under new management. I visited today because my son has been craving Taiwanese sausage rice. There is usually an unpleasant female employee there but today we were met with another female employee, very friendly and hospitable. We dined in and sat at the booth and were brought menus. I looked at the menu and it looked fairly new and prices appeared to have gone down. I was expecting smaller portions but when our food came out, I was delighted to see the generous portions of taiwanese sauce and rice. I also ordered 2 taiwanese sausages on the side and one of their steamed taiwanese tamales with egg. We enjoyed our food and service was great. Food was fresh, tasty , sausages with the perfect sear on the outside and succulent pieces of fat. We were not hassled for a tip and leaving a tip wasn't mentioned at all , just mentioning this because I read other reviews that had a bad experience. Maybe they turned a new leaf? Will def be back to enjoy more of our favorite taiwanese dishes. read more
An amazing value in this overpriced world. If you are looking for classic Taiwanese food and especially breakfast food this is the place to be. The flavors are classic, the portions are value and the expectations are right. Breakfast food all day is the best. I would skip the noodles in favor of the rice dishes however if you into pure volume of food. Further, it is a quick in and out with easy access parking. Overall would be back again. read more

I had a great experience here today! Special thanks to the cashier who was working around 12:15-12:30 PM on May 31. Since I was eating vegetarian today, I had quite a few questions about the menu. She was incredibly patient, attentive, and polite throughout the whole process. She never made me feel like I was being difficult, and I really appreciated her kindness and professionalism. The food was as delicious and authentic as always, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Thank you for the wonderful meal and excellent customer service. I'll definitely be back! read more

Great service and a very clean spot. Just a heads up, there is a $20 minimum to use a credit card. I ordered the Fan Tuan (rice roll) and the Taiwanese tamale. I was not the biggest fan of the tamale, but the Fan Tuan was excellent. They'll ask whether you want white or purple rice, and either works. You can also customize what goes inside. It already comes with pork floss, which adds a nice fluffy texture. The rice was cooked perfectly, and the fried bread inside gave it a slight crunch. Pair it with a warm soy milk, and you have the kind of meal that feels relaxing while still giving you enough energy to get through the rest of the day. read more

Taiwanese breakfast! How I wish they have something like this in Minnesota! That's why it's usually a must visit for me when I visit my family in California. My go to items are the Taiwanese meatball, omelette and sweet soy milk. Tried the dumplings during this latest visit and it was a hit with my two little guys. read more

I had been craving Taiwanese breakfast for a long time, so I was glad to finally stop by this place. There was a line but the staff was quick and efficient. The food was decent and hit the spot, and I really appreciated how easy it was to find a table without a long wait. One of the best parts is that you order and sit yourself, they serve, tip was optional, which makes the experience even more convenient. Overall, it's a solid option when you're craving Taiwanese breakfast. read more

My children asked me to drive them to get a coffee in this area. Keep in mind I live about one hour away from the coffee shop that they wanted. So I told them get some breakfast too, so they checked out what's good for breakfast and they found this. We came, we looked at the menu and wow I was amazed with the menu. Ordered different things and didn't disappoint me at all. Noodles were delicious, beef rolls were yummy. Come and taste it yourself! read more

The purple rice roll was delicious. It came with pickled radish, pork floss, and youtiao. The cold soy milk from the fridge was a bit too sweet, but the breakfast definitely reminded me of China. It tasted just like the food back home. read more
Taiwanese breakfast or food is just so hard to come across but thank goodness Yi Mei remains a staple throughout socal. So here we go, Yi Mei, where you can enjoy some classic Taiwanese breakfast. So for starters, get a fan tuan (rice roll), egg omelette, and savory soy milk. They're what make the breakfast experience. If you got room for anything else, go for it. The rice roll is nicely packed with fried dough, pork floss, and picked vegetables so I got no complaints. The egg omelette is so light and savory I could eat 2 of these if I could. The garlic soy sauce it comes with really elevates the experience. Lastly, the savory soy milk was my fiance's favorite. It looks messy but it's just comfort food through and through. So what more is there to say? Get their breakfast, otherwise I'm sure their lunch/dinner options are good too including beef stew noodle soup and oyster pancake. read more

It was my second visit here and boy was it DRASTICALLY different! I was unaware that you could customize your rice roll with so many things! You can add in a stewed egg or a scallion egg, you can even add in beef and pickled mustard. Originally when I had the normal rice roll, the portions just didn't fit well, but after adding other items, the rice roll was near perfection!! The only downside is the rice was a bit mushy that day. The wonton noodle soup blew me out the water! I had very mild to low expectations as wonton noodle soup is normally just a comforting soup, but I LOVED the flavors in this one. The noodles were like a combo of udon and ramen texture/taste. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm definitely ordering it again. The wontons were seasoned very nicely and the broth felt like it cleansed my soul. Life-changing! JK lol but it was pretty darn good. read more
Came to Yi Mei at around 9 AM on a weekday and it wasn't too busy but soon after there was a steady flow of people coming in for takeout and their quick order items at the counter as well as their refrigerated and freezer items. We were seated quickly, and the staff is so amazing here and so attentive. We ate some authentic, delicious Taiwanese cuisine, including green onion, pancake with egg, oyster pancakes, salty soy milk with Chinese doughnut, pan, fried dumplings, cold, sweet soy milk, peanut soy milk, and sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf. Yes! We ordered so much food. I also grabbed the sesame balls and mochi red bean to go. Omg everything was delicious. read more

Great quick and casual Taiwanese breakfast joint! The food here is quick and made fresh. All the Taiwanese staples like fan tuan, potstickers, tea eggs, soups! The staff is kind. Good amount of seating inside with a bar for sauce and utensils. It's extremely casual but it's got all the necessary "basics" read more
Came here on a Saturday around 11 and it wasn't too crowded! The food has always been consistent and the quality hasn't changed.
