Great service. Was in there a few weeks ago and it was the baristas first day. Said he used to be a loyal customer and loved the products so much that he got a job there. They have different local food items they sell to get with your coffee which is so cool. I had a scone from Queens bakery and he heated it up for me per his recommendation and I'm still dreaming about that scone. Delicious. Had a blueberry glaze on top which melted into the scone. One of the other regular baristas let me taste the cookie butter syrup before I ordered. They are just so friendly and excited about what they serve. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because we came to see a band a few months prior and the music was so loud we had to leave so couldn't stay long but cool enough place to make me want to come back to try one of their coffees. I don't typically do this but after speaking to a few others from the area, I figured I would warn others of this place. I went recently and tried one of the special drinks called "Chunky Monkey" as I am a huge fan of bananas and chocolate. Let me tell you, this drink was horrible! The creamer tasted curdled and I could see flecks of a milky substance floating on the top. I figured it was a fluke and decided to try their espresso martini, what a mistake. This one may have been worse than the chunky monkey and tasted what I can only describe as gasoline. I paid my bill quietly and left, but before heading to my car I made a stop at the bathroom which truly cemented my desire to never come here again. The toilets were disgusting, fecal matter looked as though it had been sprayed through a hose over each toilet....I gagged immediately upon seeing it. The smell was so atrocious I couldnt even stand it long enough to wash my hands and hurried out of there. If you are thinking of going here THINK AGAIN!!! read more

Tl;dr Vegan and allergy folks be careful. Check your vegan pastry to verify it is vegan and double check on drinks when you order. Large selection of drinks if you have no restrictions. Went on a Saturday. Family friendly, there were several families with small children. Great ambiance. Menu is extensive. Unfortunately, their specialty drinks are not vegan friendly. We originally tried to order their two flights with oat milk but were told they can't do substitutions because they use condensed milk. I took that as the foam, but they must use in all of their flavors? I am lactose intolerant, and ordered a lavender latte with oat milk. I later had some stomach troubles, but it could have been the non vegan muffin I ate. If you have dietary restrictions you should definitely make sure on the beverage side (and 100% on the food, but I'll get to that) Despite my later tummy issues, the latte tasted great and was the best drink of our group. Our group also ordered a cold brew macadamia nut drink without the cold foam and the chai latte with oat milk. The cold brew with macadamia nut was nothing to really write home about. The cold brew is balanced in flavor, but a bit light tasting. The chai latte was lighter on the chai flavor (tastes like a freshly brewed tea instead of concentrate) and didn't have much sweetener (but they do have simple syrup available to choose your own sweetness adventure). They also have pastries and bagels and donuts. We ordered one donut, a blueberry muffin, and a vegan spinach pastry. The donuts are from a local donut bakery. I was told it was good, but it was very small. The blueberry muffin was delightful! Unfortunately, a mistake was made and we were given a chocolate pastry instead of the vegan spinach pastry we ordered. While we were lucky to notice because we dined in, we would have been heavily disappointed had we not since we had milk allergies in our group. They quickly made it right and gave us the correct pastry and even refunded for the mistake, but vegans and milk allergy folks may want to doubly verify before they leave or dig in. Staff are very kind and helpful. I think this place is definitely more for the folks without any dietary restrictions. Though they definitely try to be friendly to those with restrictions (i.e. vegan pastries and alternative milks) be sure to verify before you order and leave. read more

Found this coffee shop/bar when traveling for a soccer game and I'm beyond bummed they aren't closer!! I already went back even though it's a 40 minute drive. This unique bar and coffee shop is perfect for any group to get together. I personally just had coffee but their custom drinks are interesting and I might head again to try. The coffee- I have no words to describe the perfection. I got a flight which was an amazing sampling of what they offer and also a standard ice coffee. I came here on a Saturday night to see a band. It's a pretty neat place, but they definitely could do with an adjustment on the air conditioning. It was a humid night, around 80 degrees and not much cooler inside. I was a bit confused with the drink menu, since I was expecting more of a brewery, but this place seems to specialize in coffee and breakfast items. I located a few specialty drinks on the menu but was turned off by the lack of prices on them. The first drink I got was some kind of iced tea, and while it was very tasty, I didn't taste much alcohol in it. I ordered the buffalo sliders as well, and waited at the counter for a bit, until I saw that my friend had her pretzel already. I asked where it came from since I didn't see anyone hand it to her. She pointed to the end of the counter where my sliders also were. It would have been helpful for the bartender to mention that to me when I ordered. When I closed my tab, I selected "print receipt" when prompted. Nothing came out of the machine, and I looked up at the bartender as she turned and walked away. So I guess I wasn't getting a receipt. Aside from that, the bartenders were pleasant and I didn't wait long for a drink. The band was pretty good, tables were clean and spacious, and I enjoyed the buffalo chicken sliders. read more

Yellow King is exactly what Wallingford needed. I live right around the corner from this place and go all the time for coffee in the morning or local beers at night. The selection is always great and the staff is super friendly and professional. My only comment otherwise is that the owners clearly did not watch season one of True Detective before naming this place lol. But that's not a real criticism, of course, just a humorous observation. When I first walked into Yellow King Brews, I figured, here we go again. Another one of "these" bars, and you know exactly what I mean. A beer list, scribbled on a chalkboard, containing nothing but 6.4% drinks that all taste like a Warhead candy that was left in the bathtub. A hundred chairs, all made from the thinnest tin material, bought in bulk from a Restaurant Depot. A "witty" name, "Yellow King Brews," which strangely enough pays homage to the underground Louisiana pedophile ring from True Detective Season 1, with the hopes to draw a niche crowd, only to bring in the most mundane office workers who's favorite movie is "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." Initially, I was disappointed. But then, I saw the owner. As a man who was raised in the Wallingford area, it doesn't take much to admit that the town lacked inclusivity. Most of my classmates, peers, and neighbors were all white Italian-Americans, just like myself. That is why, to see a business that is run by a member of the dwarf community, was a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, this man, who goes by Robert, or "Bobby," if you will, lacked the temperament to be a staple for the little-person community. I witnessed him put his hands on multiple patrons, in a fit of rage, over what appeared to be a dispute over an aluminum can. This, sadly, allowed all the other bar-goers to grasp for the low-hanging fruit as they hurled insults towards him. "He's an angry elf," one man yelled. "You must be this tall to ride the roller coaster!" another said. Just despicable stuff. Now that I am writing this review, I am regrettably forgetting one more possible outcome. I did not even take into account that perhaps the owner is actually a child. Maybe his father is out of town, and allowing him to run the business himself like the big boy that he is. Or maybe, he won a sort of "principal for the day" contest at his elementary school. After all, I am almost convinced that his deep v-neck t-shirt was from the GAP. It would explain the child-like rage. This idea makes everything fall into place, considering that all the merch they sell looks like it would be handed out at a class-M high school pep rally. I regret insinuating that he admires pedophiles earlier, as a child cannot actually be one. Now the chalkboard make sense. read more

We absolutely loved Yellow King! Such a cool vibe in this place. High ceiling, high top tables with bar stools, eclectic decor, an octopus mural on the wall! From the moment we walked in we knew it was unique and we most certainly had a unique experience. Yellow King is a coffee shop by day and a brewery by night. The bar area was super cool as well. We were there for coffee so we chatted a bit with the server about their menu. They are very accommodating and can make you anything! Their coffees feature some delicious combinations of flavors and are in season. I chose a pumpkin dreams latte with house made pumpkin sauce, espresso, and whipped cream. It was my first pumpkin coffee of the season and it did not disappoint! The real pumpkin, the spices, it was delicious. My husband and I shared a BEC on a jalapeño cheddar bagel. We didn't realize what we were in for with that. Lol. This bagel was so light and crispy- it was so delicious! The BEC with the jalapeño was such a great combination. Wonderful place that exudes kindness and community. This coffee house/beer bar manages to avoid being too hipster or kitchy despite leaning into a theme. I knew it was great when the staff responded to my request for suggestions of their drinks and baked goods by asking me questions to determine what sort of tastes I prefer and was in the mood for. That's the way to offer customer service -- it shows you care to offer a personalized experience and that you have the ability to cater to each customer individually. I've been frequenting Yellow King Brews for the last few months regularly & 10/10 recommend. I've lived in Wallingford a long time and it's the missing piece this area has needed for a while. The first impression you get when you walk in the front door in a positive one. The space is large, open, trendy, has lots of natural light, has a garage door that opens in the warmer weather, tons of seating, a spacious bar, 6 TVs and cool artwork throughout. It's the perfect blend between coffee house, brew pub, & cocktail bar. I pop in often with my laptop to do work during the days and get my daily caffeine fix. I've never been let down with a cup of joe & the staff is always super friendly and informative on different coffee concoctions I want to try on their impressive menu -- just check their Instagram, the pictures of their beverages says all you need to know. Their espresso martinis are the best my friends and I have ever had & their beer menu features all of the top local brews from throughout Connecticut. So let me first start by saying I was sooo excited when this place opened . We went to try their coffee and it was great! My second trip I got coffee and while pouring some half and half into my coffee out came a BUG! Gave the benefit of the doubt , explained what happened - no biggie and asked for a new coffee. The girl behind the counter replied " yeah, that happens often because the simple syrup is right next to it " . No apology and even worse, didn't replace the half and half for everyone else. I am a manager and I understand that sometimes people are hard to coach in uncomfortable situations and maybe she didn't know what to do exactly.
