I visited The Bean Coffee Roasters this week. They're a small coffee shop/roaster in the back of a building on a main drag in Cheshire. They have some seating within the mix of the giant coffee roaster area. There were a few people hanging out and people coming and going. The shop was cute, but they were fitting a lot into a little space too. I ordered a black iced coffee. I asked what they used and they just told me it was a medium roast. I assume that means they're using a blend of some sort since you would tend to highlight a high end Single Origin coffee if somebody asked. In any event, service was friendly and efficient. The iced coffee was above average. Smooth. Drinkable. No aftertaste. But it didn't really have any of the flavors of a high end coffee used for iced coffee. Four Stars read more

I found out about this small coffee shop in Cheshire recently and decided to try it the other day... and I was not disappointed! The Bean Coffee Roasters is located off of Route 10 in a small plaza with a few other businesses. There's plenty of parking in the lot. The restaurant itself is pretty small, with only a few tables to eat at. Most of the people ahead of me in line were ordering their drinks/food to-go. I had seen a Raspberry White Chocolate Latte posted on their Instagram page as a special for Valentine's Day, and asked the girl behind the counter if she could make it for me. She happily checked to make sure they still had all the correct ingredients, and luckily they did! As someone who is not a huge coffee fan, I thought it tasted delicious! They also use coffee cubes in all of their iced coffee drinks, which I thought was pretty cool (no more watered down coffee!) In addition to coffee and tea, they also had a variety of smoothies on their menu, which all sounded good, in addition to breakfast sandwiches and some baked goods. I ordered a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a ciabatta roll, and it was absolutely amazing! There was only one employee working when I went, but she was friendly and efficient. The interior is small. There is a medium size kitchen table with four chairs, and two smaller tables with a couple of chairs at each. So, this is more of a grab and go spot than a sit and sip place. I was impressed to hear all about how they roast their coffee beans and make their own flavored syrups in house. I ordered the Frosty's Favorite as a latte with oat milk. I was disappointed when I tried my latte because it didn't taste like much of anything. I actually ended up pouring my coffee out. I think I took 3-4 sips and that was all I could stand. The latte lacked body and coffee flavor. There wasn't even an aroma which typically comes from a good cup of any type of coffee. The entrance is located at the back of the building. There is plenty of parking. Sadly, I will not be returning. I LOVE my coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, etc. and the latte I got from this place fell pretty short. Perhaps it was an off day. read more

Do not come here for the baked goods. This place does have a range of coffee and charges a reasonable price. So, from me they get 1 star for baked goods and 3 stars for the coffee. Ambience is a personal taste so am not commenting or scoring. Hence my two stars. read more

The Bean is a wonderful coffee shop that serves mindfully sourced local roasts with creative flavors. I have tried a few of the specialty roasts that they have had on drip and loved each of them. They use the previous day's tap roast for their iced coffee and their Baja roast for their cold brew, both of which are served with coffee ice cubes. The decor is cool and unique, featuring a vintage coffee roaster, concert posters, coffee paraphernalia, an antique radio, plush leather chairs (a coffee shop requirement, imo), and a skeleton. The owner and staff serve amazing coffee with small-town nostalgia and a smile. I live in New Haven, and The Bean is easily seated miles above most of the spots in NHV in my ranking of local-ish coffee shops. read more

Tiny hole-in-the-wall coffee shop with a wide variety of coffee drinks, smoothies, egg sandwiches, and a few baked goods. They make all of their coffee themselves, however I was not impressed with my coffee at all. It may have just been an off day however. I also got a smoothie and it was ok, but not great either. I've been a customer since opening day, and I've seldom been disapointed with the coffee. The Bean isn't a corporate store with automatic espresso machines, and roasters. Each batch of beans and each cup is handcrafted. There are bound to be variations, but as I said disappointment is rare. I typically, visit for an Americano, or a pound of beans. But, occasionally stay for an egg sandwich. "Have it your way" doesn't begin to cover the possibilities. No doubt the best in town. Note that the new owners have only been there since 2017 so check the dates on ratings as earlier ratings are somewhat obsolete. read more

I make sure to visit The Bean whenever I'm home for the holidays! This visit home I've tried the Sumatra, butterscotch, and hazelnut brews on tap. All three were excellent black, and notably the "sweet" roasts are not at all too sweet (no sugar added). I also got a pound of the Costa Rica blend, which an employee was happy to grind for the French press. My companion ordered a hot breakfast sandwich, which was made fresh by an employee and looked delicious. Great coffee, great food, friendly employees. read more

A must stop while in Cheshire. The coffee, service and atmosphere could not be any better.

This is a very cute, quaint coffee roasting spot with great coffee. I ordered a black coffee which made me genuinely drink without an overwhelming amount of sugar & cream. It did taste good black but I still added cream because........... I don't know. I love cream in coffee. I also had a red velvet muffin that was toasted w/ butter on the side. It was so good. The only 2 downsides to the spot is that it wasn't that easy to find. Not enough signs to indicate where the place is actually located and the sign that is near the street is so small that once you see it it's too late. The other downside is that they don't have any outlets for if you come with a laptop and want to do some work on your visit. The outlet situation could actually be there purposely but besides that, I enjoyed the spot. I spoke to one of the owners about the shop and she was very friendly and very open with the information. There aren't that many coffee roasting shops in the area so finding it was a great treat. read more

I live in New Haven and the bean coffee roaster happens to be on the way to our veterinarian's office on Sandbank Rd. in Cheshire. I said I'd like a strong coffee. The person working recommended Sumatra. I got it home and it was very weak and undrinkable. I called them and told them my name and they said they'd comp me a coffee next time I was in the area. I should have gotten the name of the person but I assumed they'd honor their word. I went back yesterday (Thurs. the 4th) This time the owner was there. She was both dismissive and indifferent and had a nasty attitude. She claimed none of her employees left her a note saying I was unhappy with my Sumatra coffee. She refused to even look thru her paperwork. How she thinks she can remember a few weeks back with the hundreds of customers she's had is beyond me. I guess she must have a photographic and extraordinary memory! She made me a coffee with a shot of espresso AND CHARGED ME FOR THE ESPRESSO besides! She also told me never to come back. On top of all this when I got THIS coffee home IT WAS AS WEAK TASTING AS THE FIRST ONE WAS A COUPLE WEEKS BACK! In my opinion she is a terrible business owner!! read more

Hard to find, no clear signs up front that it is all the way around back. 1 person working and took a long time to make our coffee and sandwiches. Iced latte was just milk and chunky flavor barely any espresso. Our bacon was completely black and burnt unedible. The fried egg was also burnt. The place was smoking because our sandwiches were so burnt. I took one bite out of me sandwich and my friend couldn't even eat hers. We threw our entire order out and are going somewhere else to eat now. So disappointed. read more

A friend told us about The Bean Coffee Roasters to purchase fresh coffee beans. We are so happy we did. I messaged Tara about her beans and she let me know what beans were available. I spoke to her on the phone, ordered and picked it up within a few hours. Due to COVID-19 and the store being closed to customers, she was very accommodating and made sure she was at her store when it was convenient for us to pick up the bag of coffee beans. Most importantly the beans are FRESH and delicious. We will definitely be return customers. read more

Really cute place with quality coffee! What sets them apart is their coffee ice cubes, this way their coffee doesn't get watered down. It's a bit pricey but I'll definitely be going back. It's a very quiet place to concentrate if need be, not a lot of seating but very intimate. read more

My fiancé and I love to check out local shops. We don't live in the area, but we decided to take a ride out to The Bean recently. My fiancé had called and asked if they carried almond milk and whether or not it was sweetened or unsweetened and he was informed they carried both. When we got there, we were pleased with the decor. It's a very cute and quaint shop. The prices are lower than other local shops I've visited and they have many different flavors available. I had asked again about the almond milk and was informed it was sweetened (bummer to me as I like almond milk for dietary reasoning). The espresso was very good and I mainly had two complaints.. There was about an inch or more missing from the top of my latte. Both beverages were also not hot enough as they were both barely warm. I definitely will come back as I'd like to try their coffee as they roast their own blends in store. But I was disappointed in the misinformation and drinks I received. read more

So this is basically an n=1 review (fwiw). I had been here a year or so ago, and liked the fresh roasted coffee. This time I was disappointed. I ordered a cappuccino and was served by the barista with the comment, "This is not as foamy as I usually make it". It was pretty bad. Not only no foam, but the milk was scalded (so hot I could not drink it). What bothered me is that she knew when she served it to me that it was not fit to drink- and chose not to remake it. Even SBs knows better. As someone who has pulled shots at home for 20+ years, the one big mistake not to make when foaming milk for a cap/latte is to overheat it- it should not be more than 160F. It is easy for even a beginner to avoid this error by using a thermometer. So either the barista didn't know or didn't care. Pity. Life is too short for bad coffee. read more

The Bean is a tucked away gem right in the center of Cheshire near the Town Hall. If you truly care about coffee - I mean quality fair trade certified beans roasted in house - and not just how many syrups or additional spices you can add to your macchiato coffee - this is the perfect place for you. The Bean offers a variety of roasts, some that are consistent such as the Costa Rican as well as occasional blends. We really like the Fenway as well as Tara's Tasty Trio. I usually have a dairy product in my coffee from almost anywhere else, but at The Bean I go bold and black...yes their brew is just that good. All of their coffees are full of flavor without a burn or acidic taste. And of course you can always get a standard shot of espresso, latte, cappuccino as well as a fruit smoothie. I haven't had a smoothie, but the others are spot on. The Bean runs a tad pricey, but I consider that to be a small price to pay for a big return on investment. They also serve treats from Cheshire Baking Company and will make some basic breakfast sandwiches. The Bean is all about the coffee and less so on the food. It is a nice intimately quiet place to sit and enjoy an expertly crafted roast or accomplish some work using the WiFi (I believe you can get access there), but not a great place for a crowd. Most of their coffees are available by the pound for $12.95 and they will grind on site if requested. Makes a great gift for a fellow coffee aficionado or as a treat yo self gift. Support a niche local business and give The Bean a try. read more

Very very nice quiet coffee place but be forewarned- no accessible bathroom, which is puzzling in a food/drink establishment and pretty uncomfortable to find out after having a large beverage. I guess I will stick mostly to Starbucks (Cheshire needs a Starbucks!) read more

Went in for coffee a couple days ago. Was greeted with friendly service. I ordered a cup of Tara's tasty trio off the specials board. It was delicious and highly recommend it when it is offered. They also have several food items, including egg sandwiches. There is whole bean or ground coffee to purchase by the pound, all of which is roasted on site. It is a nice change of pace from the mainstream coffee shops and suits the town well. I will be back again for sure. read more

This place is alright. It is great that they roast their beans on site, but their coffee is always very bland and weak. Everything is over-priced, from the average breakfast sandwiches to the baked goods that are not made there. The old owner used to make some good stuff; the new owner seems to be a little inexperienced and a little careless. If the place is convenient for you to stop at, and you don't want Dunkin, then stop there. But, there are other options in the area. read more
