I really want to like the Yankee Tavern. Its tucked away in an out of the way spot along Highway 13 that after a number of years as what could best be described as a dive was fully renovated and turned into a real showplace. A definite improvement on what was there previously. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so you can choose from pancakes to sandwiches to chicken fried steak. The menu is about as extensive as it comes so you shouldn't have any problem finding something to try. The server was pushing the fried chicken and on another night I might have gone that direction (it did sound really good). As I'm prone to do I drifted over to the burger section and ordered the Double Yankee (two patties, ham, sauteed onions, cheddar cheese, bacon, and a fried egg). Also ordered the fries. The burger was tasty. The problem with it was that it was sitting in a little pool of grease as though the meat patties had been placed on the bun bottom immediately after cooking. It was soggy and of course fell apart the second I touched it so I had to resort to the old knife and fork technique to eat my now deconstructed burger. The fries were different. Not what I expected, but fine. They were, in essence, an entire potato that had an almost baked potato feel with the skin being crispy. I would have enjoyed it more with a steak or some kind of chop. With a burger, it threw me a little but was ok. I'm thinking next time I might just try that fried chicken. The beer and wine list is a decent length. Wasn't feeling too adventurous so I went with my favorite Surly Furious. Bathrooms are really nice. My burger falling apart on me put me in a bit of a mood, but it happens. I definitely have to go back again to see if my opinion changes. It was good but not great, but worth another shot. read more

I'm a big fan of Lucky's so when I drove past this restaurant being gutted I was anxious to try out the remodeled restaurant. The menu intrigues me, so I'd like to go back simply to expand my horizons on the menu. I like to ask wait staff what they would eat and she recommended their fried chicken, state fair turkey sandwich, shrimp and grits, and mushroom/Swiss burger. I chose none of these and went with the Coop Sandwich, all of them say Double patty, which worried me, but I think she said they were 2, 3 oz patties on each of their burgers. Mine was chicken and was a tad on the dry side. I was pleased to have the moisture from the hot sauce, sautéed red onions, and blue cheese, and a good amount of blue cheese you can actually taste. I thought the menu indicated it came with ranch on the side but I didn't get any. I ordered the shallot haystack and while they were good, they come in a little iron skillet pot that is full of grease when you get to the bottom. I recognize shallots are smaller but there's just not a good way to eat these. Messy, greasy, and more like eating the crispies leftover at the bottom of the grease fryer. I also asked if they were shareable (when I ordered) and she hesitated. I would say no that it isn't that much to share. Oh and btw all sides are a la carte. Having never stepped foot in this place pre-gut, I would say they sunk some cash into it. They have a huge bar and would say it seats probably 40 all the way around. I started to sit at the bar near the door and then said to myself I didn't want to be by a drafty door. We were seated at a high top in the bar about 3 high tops in by the pull tabs and I never took off my coat as you could feel the blast of cold air every time the door opened and it's not even really cold yet. Not to mention, we were not far from the open kitchen. The music was loud and we had a speaker right over our table. Needless to say conversation was minimal. At least there's a good amount of TVs stationed all the way around the restaurant. Our server was friendly and the food came out quickly. It's a convenient location, but wow, terrible food.   The sandwiches started at $15, were small, and came with no sides. An order of fries came with a literal handful of fries, extremely disappointing for my group with kids. I ordered the chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. It wasn't eatable, but we didn't have time to re-order food. On the bright side, the waitress was attentive, but needless to say, neither me nor my group will be returning. read more

There's nothing crazy about this place but it's a decent spot to grab a beer and an app with a friend. Their chicken tenders are ginormous and really good with their honey mustard. Plus, their homemade chips are pretty good as well. Though my favorite thing about Yankee is probably how nicely they decorate inside for holidays -- it always is super cute. read more

The inside of this place is gorgeous! Friendly service and great food. I definitely will be going back to try the fried chicken because they do a Sunday southern buffet with the fixings. Large menu with a lot of options, there's something here for everyone. My chicken sandwich was so good. The batter they use is so tasty and you can tell it's homemade. I also added a side of the fresh kettle chips and those were tasty too. My husband and his mom both got the philly sandwich and said it was good too. The only thing is that I'm not a huge fan of the al a carte sides because it adds up to be more than ordering a regular combo. The cost of us getting our sandwiches equaled about what it would have cost to just get the buffet. They do a Friday night fish fry that I want to go back to try as well. It's tough to find a good fish fry around here compared to back home in WI. This place has a lot going for it from what I got to experience tonight. read more

I set low expectations for late night delivery, but still. The menu is a bit haphazard and offers a lot of selections that don't have useful description (I knew I wanted to steer clear of the "Carolina Reaper" sauce, but the others had names that weren't very helpful. All in all, chicken tenders were over cooked, had a semi-pleasant taste, but were just too heavy to eat as a meal I suspect that this restaurant probably is one of those places that does a lot better dining in, but when I need something delivered, sorry folks. I've been here a couple of times over the past two months, but it took me years to remember to go here. I lived in Eagan for years, and always noticed this place and all the cars, but it took a friend recommending we meet there to get there :). I went again last week and I asked my husband if we could go again two days later...so that tells you something! It's not a terribly big place, but big enough. It's cozy, kind of loud, but the service is fantastic and so is the food! They have great appetizers (Love the chips and queso....salty, crispy chips and queso that is just thick enough to stick to the chip with great flavor and a medium amount of spice). This time I had the new Pan fried turkey sandwich and Holy Hanna....that thing is terrific! It comes with thick, tasty slices of pan fried turkey, a pile of salty, crispy fried onions strings, and all on a Brioche bun. It was truly incredible! I took half home and then let my husband take it to work for lunch the next day...and then proceeded to feel sorry for myself because I wanted to eat it after I got to work ;). Oh well...now comes the part where I start asking him to go there with me two days later :). They do have you order your sides (tots, fries as add-ons), but they are reasonably priced additions at least and at those prices you can order a few things. I got tots (delicious), blue cheese pickled onion coleslaw (needed some flavor), and roasted brussel sprouts (have cheese and some other stuff all baked together...very tasty but expecting just roasted brussel sprouts). Portions are generous as well. I have not had a bad thing on the menu to be honest, and the service is always friendly and attentive. I would have given 5 stars since I'm addicted to the place, but for the noise level. It wasn't bad until they started to do Bingo. So...I'm not sure if maybe the guy forgot he had an actual microphone when we was talking, but seriously....why are you shouting into a microphone?? I was (unfortunately) seated toward the back of the restaurant and there was a speaker right over my head, but wow!! So that kind of ruined the important conversation that I was having with my friend and we left shortly thereafter since we were both getting a bit of a headache after a while. No thanks. Saying the service and food was mediocre would be a very generous assessment. On a Sunday afternoon, around 1:30 with the place more than half empty, food for six people was delivered at three separate times, at least 3-5 minutes apart and we had to ask for silverware and napkins after all of the food finally arrived. Food was not good and way over priced for what you get. Would not recommend. read more

Compared to the eye sore this place used to be, the Yankee Tavern is a substantial improvement; clearly the owner put some work into making the building much more presentable. We went on a Friday evening and the place was packed. In fact, it was difficult to find a parking spot. But, don't let that fool you, there's enough room inside, even if the lot is full. We were seated immediately in a booth, which was perfect. The decor is fresh, very well themed, and upon taking our seats, we were excited for this new restaurant in Eagan, which is desperately needed in the area. Fortunately, it was still happy hour, so appetizers were $3 off and all the light beers were cheap (as they should be anyway). We quickly ordered some beers and some potato skins - I'm not 5-staring those, but 3-4 is appropriate. So, where did my 2-star review come from? Well, despite nice decor, decent prices, and a prompt wait staff, if the food sucks, then there goes your review. I ordered the Chicago Brisket Sandwich and a side of steak fries. The sandwich was awful, absolutely terrible - completely dried out brisket sandwiched between very dry ciabatta bread. I was forced to dunk it in ketchup just to get it down. And the steak fries? Well, those were just large potato wedges that were fried too long, so they were extra crispy and loaded with tons of salt (I like salt, but these were even too salty for me). My wife's BLT sandwich was the same - she said the bacon was overly cooked and the bread was extremely dry. She, too, had to dip her sandwich in ketchup! Ultimately, I wanted to like the place and even embrace it as a new spot to go for dinner or beers, but with the food being as terrible as it was, I'll add the Yankee Tavern to the list of Eagan establishments that just plain suck. Don't waste your money here...go down the road to Jensen's and enjoy quality food instead. read more

Went for the first time on a Friday night and had their fish fry. The fish and homemade potato chips were very very good. The two fish pieces were a little small but very tasty. We arrived after dark and weren't even sure where the front door was as it was incredibly dark. The service was terrific even though it was very busy. Didn't see any employees standing around. The chicken tenders in their kids menu is big and juicy! I was here last night and ordered the pork chop again only to find out a little later that they were out. It's kind of interesting to see how to NOT do things, and this is that place...There were red flags from the very start- no hostess so we sat ourselves, had to find a high chair for the baby and then didn't have menus so just sat awkwardly until the waitress came. 2 stars are mostly for the waitress as she was very nice when she was present. The decor is cute, it's very dark and cabin-like but the food is bad, plain and simple. We all were so disappointed at how none of what we ordered was good. It is the cheapest quality you could possibly find anywhere. The food prices are even worse and when you are serving meals on chipped plastic plates they did not add up. I have had a better meals at fast food restaurants, I am being totally honest. If you look at my other reviews I don't slam places just for fun- this was overall one of the worst dining experiences in recent memory. Our food arrived cold, but since we had a fussing baby and had been sitting forever without the apps we ordered we just went with it. All around us food was being sent back, the table next to us got their appetizer twice by accident(we didn't get ours at all!) and another table one member didn't get his food with the table. It was chaos and so expensive- I would never come back. I had the "fried cod sandwich" and it was 2 fish sticks on a stale store bought bun with cheese, lettuce and tarter. With a side of cold sweet potato fries and an ice tea my bill was about $20- insane for the poor quality+service. read more

We were there the first week it opened. Granted, I'm sure there are some kinks to be worked out, but both the service and food need work. If it wasn't the first week, I would have given this place a 1/2 start rating. First, we got on the waiting list for a table. Our buzzer went off, but no table was ready. We were told they would find us at the bar when a table was open. 30 minutes later we asked about our table, and they had forgotten about us. We did get seated right away at that point. The bar staff was overwhelmed. We had to wait more than 10 minutes just to flag down someone to pay our bill. Our server (once we got a table) was good but clearly having a rough night. She was getting lots of complaints from other tables, and repeatedly apologized to us even though we hadn't complained. The food - meh. It has potential if cooked properly. We both had steak fries that were undercooked and still crunchy. And for goodness sake, get rid of the giant bowl of cigarette butts right by the entrance. Gross. Probably the best fried chicken in the Twin Cities. I'm a fried chicken guy- this is as good or better than anything out there. The service was fantastic, wings were great, and i did try the ribs as well. The meat was a little tough but the flavor was awesome and the sauce is wonderful. I highly recommend this place...if they are anything like their sister restaurant (Lucky's 13) the rest of the menu that I haven't gotten to is awesome too. read more

We were visiting from Vegas for our twin granddaughters' birthday and our son's band's performance at nearby venue. Local extended family had us choose someplace for dinner before the performance and this had a varied menu, reasonable prices and perfect location. We had 5 adults and the 9 year old twins. Everyone was happy with their meals from hamburgers to Thai Peanut bowl to Jambalaya to Pesto Shrimp Scampi. The chicken tenders were highly recommended by some friends and when I saw the 'chicken fried chicken' I knew I had to try it. 2 chicken tenders with hash browns a country style gravy toast and 2 eggs. Oh my WOW!!! The has browns were legit with cheese and onions. The gravy a darker rich peppery goodness. One of my all time favorite breakfast dishes. My bf and I got the same thing and a pancake to share for breakfast desert. Lol man oh man. It was bigger than a dinner plate. So so good. Dark just the way they should be. Great flavor. I am usually a sweets for breakfast kind of person. Rarely savory. I will be moving next week and will be about an hour away and I will make the drive to have this on a regular basis. read more
