Stumbled on Yang Chow in Pasadena when another restaurant was way too crowded. We were welcomed with a smile and seated right away. Good food choices. We had moo shu pork, lemon chicken, house noodles and rice with plum and lemon sauces. It was all very good. Service was great. It's been a while since I had Yang Chow. My buddy Dave (L. Roth) has been wanting to try the place for a couple of years and I've been talking up the shrimp. Started with steam vegetable dumplings, blecch, the dough seemed dry and/undercooked. The filling was mush and not very flavorful. Luckily the Slippery Shrimp did not disappoint and more than made up for the bad dumps. The chicken lo mein was good, great savory flavor and not greasy. This place has a big menu and from my past experience there, most of it is good. The restaurant has an old school vibe and prices were reasonable, good value because of the portion size. Really fast and friendly service (btw, if your menu is still on your table, several servers will ask if you're ready to order!) and got our delicious food quickly. As everyone says in these reviews, GET THE SIZZLING SHRIMP (page 3 with specialties). It's fried shrimp with some amazing flavors and sauce (I'm not good with ingredients). We also got Wonton Soup, Hot and Sour soup, and Yang Chow fried rice - they all hit. Amazing. There is a small parking lot but it fits like 12 cars; we parked in the neighborhood right next to it with no problem. Don't think there were signs preventing it or anything. We've eaten here and got take out. The first time we ate here service was attentive. They filled our waters constantly, which is great because I drink a lot of water. Recently, I ordered take out and they were on time with the quote they gave me of 20 minutes. Slippery shrimp ($22.50) is great and a must order! Ever since we tried this restaurant we always get this item! So is their fried rice. I love how they don't use soy sauce on their vegetable fried rice ($14.75) and it's not oily. It comes with baby corn, snap peas, green onion, carrots, and good about of scrambled egg chunks. We got the Szechuan beef ($21.25) and it came with pieces of red chilies and broccoli. It was delicious. Very tender beef pieces. The chicken lo mein ($16.50) is good as well. Lots of chicken that you can see throughout the noodles. All portions are huge. It can easily feed 3-4 people or in my case, two people with plenty of leftovers. All 4 items cost around $81.85 not including tip. Parking may be a little of a hassle because the lot is small. Luckily when I came to pick up the food there were a few parking spaces available. Ambiance is an old school Chinese restaurant. Lots of space for seating big parties as well. read more

Let's start by saying, if you don't order the Slippery Shrimp, you didn't order right and these are must. Our last trip, lunch time, there must have been ten plus tables, and all of them had an order of these delicious shrimps. Wonton soup is delicious, as well as almost anything on the menu. Wow, have prices changed for many of these restaurants these days. Despite that, their dishes are delicious and a healthy portion. Classic go-to's are still the sizzling rice soup, egg rolls, slippery shrimp, pan fried noodles, and king pao chicken. Service is quick and friendly. We came by during a weekday lunch and it wasn't too busy after their lunch crowd around 1pm. Their dining room is spacious amd comfortable. A supremely tasty and authentic Cantonese-inspired American Chinese restaurant serving dressed-up versions of Chinese classics such as Chow Fun, Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Lo Mein, and Beef Stir Fry. My companions were fighting me tooth and nail about this place while driving into Chinatown. Companion #1: what is so special about this place? Companion #2: why can't we eat somewhere else? I have had this place bookmarked for the longest time. Their signature dish is their Slippery Shrimp. I am curious as heck why all the patrons rave about this one dish. Waiter: what would you like? Me: the Slippery Shrimp Instead of eating it with white rice we opted to have it with Yang Chow fried rice. We also ordered steamed fish with scallions. For $19.50, it is a generous serving. The shrimps are lightly fried in cornstarch which gives it a nice crunchy layer. Surprisingly the sweet and sour coating didn't make it soggy. We all thought it was delish with that slight spicy garlicky kick. The Yang Chow fried rice was one of the best I have ever had. To sum it up, it's Americanized Chinese done extremely well. 5 stars for this iconic Chinese restaurant. Place has been around for 30+ years. Had no idea that this location existed until last week and I'm so glad I found it because sometimes I just don't want to deal with the traffic Downtown. It was a NO for me. This place came highly recommended so I had some expectations. First off the waiters are rude. They throw things hardly came around to check if we needed our drinks refilled or anything. I'm not a big fan of Chinese food but my parents are so we stopped by. We ordered the king pao shrimp (which tasted fishy) and broccoli beef with steamed rice. The broccoli beef didn't really have any flavor even if you added spices. We ordered the wonton appetizer (which were nice and crispy) water and tea. I cannot believe it has been five years since I have been to Yang chow, and we live so close. We visited on Saturday, August 26th during the dinner hours for take-out. We called the order in ahead of time, and it was ready in a short 15 minutes. We shared four dishes tonight. We had as follows: Slippery Shrimp: 10/10 Crispy Duck: 10/10 Yang Chow Fried Rice: 10/10 Eggplant with Spicy Garlic: 8/10. Everything was absolutely delicious. We felt the eggplant though was neither spicy nor garlicky. It definitely could have been a bit better; however, the dish was still well executed. Yang Chow is old school brown sauce Chinese food in either a good or bad way, depending on your point of view. It's what Chinese food was to Americans before the rise of regional flavors in the American food echo system. (Think pre-Panda Express, if you're having a hard time). It's simplistic Chinese food for a palate that hadn't been exposed to the complexity and spices from the multiple regions of China. It's an introduction if you will, but not an accurate reproduction. The food here is hearty and filling. However, it lacks the flavor profiles that I'm used to from eating around the world. Yet, that's not what you should come here for. You come to Yang Chow for good service and some traditional favorites like the slippery shrimp and/or their version of orange chicken. However, if you really just want orange chicken...go to Panda Express as Yang Chow's can be hit or miss depending on the day. What you do get at Yang Chow is good service. An interesting staff that's willing to help you push your culinary boundaries and big portions. You definitely won't go home hungry. So as long as you manage your expectations, you'll leave happy, but if you're expecting complexity and unique flavor profiles, then you're going to be disappointed. read more

Also ordered some of their Sauteed Green Beans w/ pork, beef fried rice, Double-Cooked Pork and Vegetable Lo Mein. The Slippery Shrimp was excellent! The fried rice, lo mein and green beans were OK (no better). The Double-Cooked Pork was AWFUL! being SOOO salty it was practically inedible! If we didn't live so far away I would've returned it, especially at $18.75, but we just threw it in the trash and learned an expensive lesson. Prices have gone up, Quality has gone down.
