Pros - it's AYCE sushi/ appitizers / entrees so that's fun - dishes all came out at a reasonable time considering the restaurant was pretty full. Cons - service was lack luster. Waitresses were not very attentive. - restaurant seemed old and a little grimy - quality of fish seemed to get worse with every order. The tuna sashimi we ordered the second time around was not very fresh and the cuts contained a lot of stringy connective tissue which wasn't enjoyable.(Had to spit it back out) Recommendations The salmon and white Tuna were the best cuts of fish. The food here is very good. It is always fresh, high quality, and ive never been disappointed in the actual food. But damn, the service here is always so rude and one of the worst ive ever experienced at any restaurant. Pretty much every time ive come and ordered, over the span of over a decade, they always try to ask you to order less by threatening to make you pay extra for leftovers. They either give less than you ordered, or insist on you ordering less. Its frustrating being constantly talked down to like that. They are also very slow and do not pay attention. The best all you can eat sushi place (maybe one of the only) around. My boyfriend and I have been here multiple times and it's great. For $22 per person, you can all you can eat sushi and apps. When I ordered everything all at once, it took a very long time for food to even come out. We waited 45+ minutes after we placed the order to get food, and we came pretty hungry. However, even after ordering food for the second round, service was STILL very slow. We had to ask about our food a couple times and ended up inadvertently spending hours there. I've come here often in the past, before the Covid crisis. This was one of my favorite AYCE places in the Boston area for one simple reason: their sushi and sashimi were among the best you could find in an AYCE place. Thick, juicy cuts of fatty salmon, mouth watering tuna, all artfully prepared. They also had a good selection of hot kitchen food that came for the all-inclusive price. But I wouldn't say that the hot food was any better than what you would get in other restaurants of this type. It was the high quality of the fish that brought us back. With Covid making it a pain to go out to dinner, our family had not come to the Yamato for a long time. Finally, a couple of weeks ago we went back. They spread the tables out, so social distancing wasn't an issue. We ordered, and then eagerly waited for our sushi and sashimi to arrive. What arrived at our table a bit later drew a gasp. Instead of the fatty cuts of salmon we were used to, and had been expecting, we received some of the leanest, least attractive sushi we had ever had, anywhere. I mean, this was not a case of going from one of the best to average. This was dropping down to the bottom of the barrel. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. Maybe some people enjoy really, really lean fish. We didn't. We quickly ate our meal. The fish tasted as "meh" as it looked. We left, and we won't be back any time soon. All you can eat sushi is always great but best when you're going through some midterm or final stress. Price range is a little high but if you go for lunch, it's great for college students. Location is also super close to Boston College so anyone can easily commute there from campus. Good spacing between tables, warm! interior, service on a Sunday afternoon was fast and efficient. As noted elsewhere, parking spots are very scarce - just don't drive here. Tables and chairs were functional, but damaged. Most restaurants that charge $25+ per diner would be embarrassed to allow their furniture to look like this, but the furniture does its job so who really cares. The little koi pond in the entrance has cloudy water and doesn't smell great - really hope that was just a temporary oversight. AYCE food is made to-order, not a buffet, and it tasted pretty fresh. Rice was 4/10 - nothing notably bad but just slightly off. Maybe not seasoned properly. But it doesn't detract from the meal. Proteins are not skimpy, a nice surprise, and every piece of fish we ate was fresh tasting and in very good proportion to other ingredients. We didn't order anything other than sushi/rolls and a seaweed salad. The salad was 2x more than any other I've ever ordered - lends credence to the idea that they fill you up on non-sushi dishes. Staff was not chatty, but other reviews saying they were not friendly were not accurate based on our visit. The worst sushi I've ever had in my life... the fish is not fresh and has a slimy taste, the eel has no flavor and can definitely tell it's been there for a while. The striped bass has a foul taste and cannot be chewed through, the only thing that's ok is the salmon, which truth be told is very hard to was up. The rice for the nigiris are gigantic compared to the fish, so you're basically eating a giant rice ball with a little bit of fish on top, not a nigiri. Not only that, the rice is also one of the worst I've ever tasted. It's dry, mushy, and has no flavor, not a hint of vinegar at all. It seems like they just called regular poorly steamed rice as "sushi rice" The rolls are also confusing, I'm all for innovation but please taste it before you serve. I had a Hawaiian roll (+1.50$) and it has raw lettuce, canned mango, and tasteless salmon mush. I've never tasted anything so bizzare and awful in my mouth. The appetizers are below average as well, although still somewhat edible. The tofu is not too bad. This is one of the saddest and most depressing meal I've ever had, and I'm someone who usually finishes the food no matter how bad it is, but for this I genuinely can't finish. When the waitress brought back the plate I overheard the male cook complaining in Chinese "he didn't finish the food". The only reason I wanted to try this place was because it was all you can eat sushi, $30 per person. Most of the sushi seemed alright. Tuna sashimi tasted a little strange, but white tuna & sake sashimi was very good. Most of the Maki rolls were decent, however the rainbow roll was sad looking and tasting. Philadelphia tempura was also an odd combo. Nothing special in general. Appetizers were also decent. edamame, shumai, gyoza, shrimp tempura, agedashi tofu--all got the job done, nothing insanely delicious. Eel Zuccini, Salmon asparagus, was odd (weird combo/ not done well. Literally just thrown in a fryer covered in batter). Seaweed salad even tasted a little bit old & warm. Tried an entree salmon teriyaki, portion was one tiny piece of dry salmon with teriyaki sauce on top. Desserts were pretty good, fried ice cream only comes in vanilla and the outer layer was a little too mushy to my liking. Ice cream comes in flavors with red bean, green tea, and vanilla. Even though it doesn't say it on the menu. Fried banana was alright. SERVICE & ATMOSPHERE: The waitress maybe said a total of 5 words to us. But other than that, they did their job fine I guess. The 3/5 stars average rating is a poor representation of Yamato. $24.99 per person for weekday dinner is an awesome price when you consider the fact that sashimi is on the all-you-can-eat menu! Unlimited sashimi for $25? At a typical Japanese restaurant, a combination sashimi platter is $40+. Each special roll you order is an extra $1 but you can have a good dining experience without ordering any special rolls. Plus, if you pay cash you get $1 off your bill. The AYCE menu has good variety. We enjoyed the fried gyoza, steamed shumai, and fried calamari appetizers. The gyoza was a definite favorite as it was plump and juicy with the perfect fry. Unfortunately, the "steak" was a thin slice of beef that was overcooked and the fried chicken was flavorless and overdone so I don't recommend those. We ordered a decent amount of salmon, tuna, and white tuna sashimi and have no complaints about the quality of fish given the price of dinner. Very enjoyable sashimi offered at Yamato. We also liked the various makimono and hand rolls we ordered - mostly spicy salmon and spicy tuna. Obviously this is not high end sushi but it's great for what it is and I have no complaints. A lot of AYCE sushi places will put way too much rice in their rolls to fill you up so you don't order more but Yamato's rolls are well proportioned. Whenever I come to Yamato, it's for the AYCE sushi. If you come during dinner time, the dessert is included (Sunday to Thursday $27 while Friday, Saturday and Holidays $29). If you decide to do the AYCE sushi, you could choose from an extensive list of appetizers, which range from dumplings to noodles. The sushi is fresh and made per order. I recommend their hand rolls - spicy crab meat is my favorite! I've noticed the first plate of sushi comes out very quickly; however, slows down as you order the next plate. If you order a lot of sushi (even if your party contains a lot of people), they never give you your exact order as there's always something missing. Been here many times with may groups of people, and as far as all-you-can-eat sushi goes this place is very good. The quality of the pieces is quite high, and they are generous with the fish that they provide. Especially if you get the sashimi, it is a lot of raw fish so I do feel like it makes the price worth it. The fish is actually pretty great - the salmon is always thicc and fatty, and the tuna fresh and clean. I like that you order from a sheet and then they bring you the order. The anticipation builds and there's nothing as satisfying as receiving your huge plate piled with sushi. It's also nice knowing the pieces were made fresh rather than going to pick out pieces yourself at a central buffet where they've been sitting out for who knows how long. Be warned though that finding parking here can (and most likely will) be a nightmare during the busy meal times so keep that in mind! If you're not a sashimi lover, the best time to go would be weekday lunch since the price is quite reasonable. We came for dinner and since I'm not a huge sashimi lover, I found myself going nuts on anything that contained eel (both for value and because I absolutely love eel!). It's a menu system so check off what you want, send it off and wait for the mounds of sushi to arrive! They do charge for wasted sushi so don't go too crazy otherwise you'll get dinged for it on the check! Service was never really this place's strong suit. They were pretty prompt with drink refills but expect slower service after you put in your 2nd+ slip for sushi. Sushi quality was okay, nothing stellar. This place is really to cater towards your sudden sushi cravings so don't expect anything 5 star in terms of quality here! Hands down the best AYCE sushi place in Boston. Their sushi is made in house at the sushi bar to the right when you walk in. Their seaweed from time to time is not always as fresh, but whatever. I'm mainly there for whats inside the sushi. My go to is their spicy crab stick hand rolls, caterpillar rolls, dragon rolls, spicy crab stick, and shrimp tempura. Oh, the snow mountain(additional $1) is amazing!!! Depending on who I go with we can go for 2-4 rounds of sushi plates. I don't eat raw sushi, but I go with at least one person that does so we can get our monies worth. They don't have just sushi, but also appetizers if you wish. Personally I would order a couple things to share off the app list and save your stomach for the sushi. Be aware of the prices before you go in as there are different set prices depending on what day of the week and at what time you go in. Personally going in at dinner ($26.99-$28.99 for adult) time is more worth it because you can order additional raw sushi and ice cream for dessert, whereas the lunch menu does not serve these. The service here is complete trash. Servers don't want to work. There are so many of them, but no one is ever available to help when needed. They are stingy with their utensils and napkins. The serves watch you eat just to make sure you are not wasteful. Also, you have to ask to order more for them to give you another appetizer and sushi sheet which is so annoying. I've been here numerous times and the sushi servers make less and less of your order as much as possible. One time my table ordered 10 hand rolls and only 6 came out although the serves confirmed how many prior to leaving our table. If you're here for the service, try somewhere else. A lot of the customers just order the dinner menu which is about $25 but includes everything. The fish on the nigiri seemed fresh and big compared to the rice portion. They had special rolls where you pay $1 for each order on top of the base buffet price. I'd say skip that, since they all taste the same with heavy use of spicy mayo and eel sauce. The two that we ordered, the spicy scallop and spider roll were not good at all. The spicy scallop sushi was hot, which is disgusting for sushi. The spider roll did not taste fresh at all. The tempura shrimp in the other rolls were heavily battered. This place is not such a bad deal if you want mediocre sushi, considering how expensive Boston can be. I'd highly recommend you start with small orders first then add on later. I've seen people struggle finishing their orders since the fried rice and noodles can be huge portions. I've been here multiple times over the last few years but the culmination of my last few experiences requires me to leave a poor review. I've acquired food poisoning twice from here, the first very minor and didn't think anything of it. Most recently I dined here on Saturday November 2nd, I am still in bed ill Friday after. I've been urgent care and the ER, unable to intake food or hydration. The most severe diarrhea I've ever had, greater than 15 episodes a day, which has now subsided a bit. Everybody else in the group that dined recovered by Monday or Tuesday. As I am awaiting for stool sample results, bloodwork doesn't show bacterial infection. Perhaps it was a sick worker that gave me their viral illness? Parasite? I don't know yet. I can not recommend you eat here with poor standard of food hygiene that has put a healthy athletic 25 year old in bed for a nearly a week. The food is good enough for the price in the area of all you can eat. Truly unsure of Yamato's low rating. Yamato is located right near BC's campus in Brighton. If you go here to order off the menu, I don't understand. Yamato is known for its all you can eat and it delivers to that promise. They have a large variety of rolls, sashimi, appetizers, and desserts on the AYCE menu. They offer some premium rolls for an upgrade, but truly they're not necessary. I've had friends make it a competition to see hoe much they can eat, but you will definitely leave uncomfortably full after dining here. My personal favorites are the crab rangoons, tempura, and makimono rolls. Honestly, some of the best crab rangoons I've had. I tend to stick to "basic" vegetarian rolls while my friends go for the more extravagant pieces. I love the sweet potato especially while my partner always goes for salmon and eel. An hour passes with us waiting by the door (in view of the hostess) and the hostess approaches us saying that since she thought we had "left" after hearing the hour wait, she did not add us to the list. She argued with me that I never gave a name, and yet she never even asked when we first arrived. You would think a basic duty of a hostess would be to tell you your wait time and ask for you name regardless if you stay or not. Here, the hostess likes to tell you a long wait time to scare you away so she has less work to do. She then had the audacity to tell us that she put us at the end of the list and it would be another 30min. Another hour passes and we've seen groups of people arrive and leave before we had a table. The worst part is that we saw an open table after the first hour of waiting, and the hostess kept telling us we had to wait longer. In the end, we end up getting that open table which wasn't used the whole time we were waiting. For total time, we arrived around 6 and by the time we were finished we had stayed close to closing at 10:30. Absolutely ridiculous. Gave a reduced tip since we wasted our Friday night waiting there and the waitress told us "f*** you". Don't waste your time here. Go to Fin's for sushi which is down the street. read more

Went with a party of 5 on a Thursday night and were able to be seated immediately. Not sure if it's only all you can eat but that's what we did and it was perfect. The portions are small but shareable so you can really try everything if you'd like! which is what we did and we were LIVING. Everything was delicious -- from the sashimi to the rolls to the kitchen food to the green tea! YUM. As a collective, we were satisfied. I came here with 3 friends and we all enjoyed both the hot and cold food. This is the better Yamato location IMO. Service wasn't terrible...I mean, honestly, I don't like to complain, especially about AYCE places because the staff really does work hard to make it a satisfactory dining experience at such high volume. Food was very carefully presented and delicious, and that's really all that matters. Reasonable price for what you get. Arrive hungry - leave satisfied. Orders were fill surprisingly fast. Sushi quality matches the cost. They don't spend much on the restaurant decor- which is fine trade-off for lower price. read more
