Attended the soft opening (not friend or family-as stated by another yelper) on Sat. night and was more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of the offerings, the cleanliness and wonderful service. The food presentations here are the best in the area for sushi, sashimi, urchin, etc. The sushi was so fresh and compares to some of the best sushi places. Yes, it is in the new busy Waverly location on Providence but the wait and parking were not bad at all. Small bar area to spend time and get a bowl of their yummy edamame to share. This is just for takeout - as that is the only option. I was a little nervous ordering from a sushi establishment during the pandemic but it was out of this world. I got the yama bowl, and my husband got the Morrison role, spider role, and two California rolls. Everything was fresh and the flavors were on point. This is by far the best sushi bowl in the area. We had a favorite Japanese restaurant in NJ where we are from and owned by a Japanese couple. My husband likes the rolls which are very fresh and I like The sashimi. We visited at 9:15pm on a Tuesday during the soft opening. It was a quiet night and we were seated and served promptly. Brandon had excellent recommendations for both drinks and sushi. Our rolls were extraordinary, and we would venture to say they might be our current favorite in Charlotte. We ordered the Snow, Niigata (sp?), and Ballantyne rolls. We had a hard time determining which was our top choice of the three, and we would absolutely order all three again. It's very obvious their ingredients are fresh and quality driven. I just moved to Charlotte area a few months ago and sushi, in particular sashimi is my favorite. Since I've been here I've only had cooked rolls from other places because I was to afraid of the fish. I've been coming here for awhile now and figured I should really write a review. The sushi here is some of the best, and I don't just mean for Charlotte. IMHO, this place competes with sushiyas in Hawaii, and is better than most of the places I've been to in LA, SF and Manhattan. Also, the miso soup is exceptional; you can really tell that they care about their dashi. My family says their cooked food and rolls are excellent too, but I go straight for the nigiri every time because Robin is the master. Always ask about their specials, and make sure you get the kinmedai whenever it's available. My other favorites are hirame (get it with the shiso leaf) and ikura (the lemon zest takes it to a whole new level). The space is very clean and comfortable, and every member of the staff is super friendly and attentive. Hands down my favorite Charlotte restaurant. read more

Since the first time I've gone, I've been back way too many times to count. I need to update to a 5 star. Not sure why I gave them 4 before! The rolls aren't exactly what I like but they are more than happy to add whatever I request and I love that!! Also If you haven't tried the duck, you need to because it's amazing. Yum! There are so many options for food in Waverly, but Yama is definitely a great choice. Great drinks, great appetizers, and great sushi. I had the Mandarin Mule, which was delicious and a very sweet take on a mule. Some spring rolls that were pretty standard. And the Morrison roll. The steak on top of the sushi was very good. We loooooooooooove the sushi at Yama. Seriously, at night I dream of it. Try anything, but we love the lobster roll, all the sashimi, the calamari, and the fried rice is also super delish. If we could get them to serve rosé by the glass, it's likely I would just move in. read more

Yama in Waverly has got some of the freshest and fantastic varieties of fish we've ever had! Robin is behind the counter and prepares some of the best concoctions of sushi / sashimi that we've had to date! The staff has made us feel like family over the course of the past two years! Would have loved to give this place a better review. We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, but our service was inattentive and slow. Had to flag 3 different people down for refills on drinks, napkins, to order desert, and finally after watching our server stand at the sushi bar for 15 minutes while we were waiting for our check I had enough. No table awareness whatsoever . To the point I almost said something to the manager but chose to reflect my feelings in the tip (flat 10%). I hate to do that because I was in the restaurant business for 15+ years, but get a clue dude. When you're paying $250.00+ for a table of 4, you better step it up. This is a great location and the interior design is aesthetic and amazing. The floors are really nicely done and the table spacing and layout is wonderful. Add to this, some nice windows and lots of light. We found the prices to be on the high side. Selection was modest, certainly not extensive. Portions are average, perhaps on the small side. The miso soup was so-so. The gyoza was perfect (but half-size portion). Main course, sushi - disappointing. Fake crab and rice tasted stale. Definitely not mouth watering. I thought maybe we found "the place" for sushi...nope, another let-down. Will repeat, but expect the bill to be higher to get normal dinner-size portions. read more

I came here for lunch with a few co-workers. This place is amazing! The sushi is so fresh and delicious. I got the lunch special with a bento box. They have great lunch specials that everyone would enjoy. The prices aren't bad for lunch either. We also got calamari for the table which was amazing! It is a small place so I can see there being a wait if it gets crowded. The service was great. Our waiter came over to the table a few times to check on us and was helpful when needed. Called in today Tuesday March 20th for a reservation this coming Saturday for a party of 12. A very nice young lady said sure no problem, what time? I asked for 7:30 and she said not a problem. I then asked if they had a private room. She confirmed they do but wasn't sure it could hold 12. She put me on hold to find out. Then a very rude guy got on the line and with attitude said that room only hold 10 plus it's already taken. I said no worries we will just take a table. He then replied not at 7:30 that is prime time and we would have to move tables for your group. He asked if we could just come in on Sunday. What a jerk. He then replied well if your group would come in at 6 and could be done for prime time around 7:30 he might be able to assist our group. I can't recommend this place high enough - my favorite restaurant. I want to be perfectly clear - fantastic! I like nagiri and I eat it once a week, usually for lunch at Nikko (which is great), this place is better. If you've read my reviews you know I consider eating at a place like voting - by supporting it you are voting that they continue to do it the way that they are and that they may stay in business. I really want this place to continue doing exactly what they are doing. It's a big deal to have this good of sushi so close to home. read more
