We stopped in during lunch, and I ordered the catfish with yams and greens. It also comes with cornbread. Everything was SO good! But that cornbread?! Ooh whew! It was the bomb, almost like dessert. I could've eaten another piece by itself! The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the yams. They were a little too sweet for my liking. The inside has a cool, laid-back vibe, and the service was great. After struggling to find some good food during our visit, Double Down Bistro definitely came through!

Whew! My stomach was happy. I also ordered the ribs w/ the sauce on the side, mac & cheese and collard greens. The ribs reminded me of my family's backyard barbecues; the meat was tender & seasoned well. The sauce was tasty, reminded me of Sweet Baby Ray's. The greens were too salty for me & the mac & cheese reminded me of doctored Kraft mac & cheese, not a baked mac & cheese. It wasn't my favorite. The hush puppies were tasty. The pound cake tho! Somebody's grandma baked that baby. The slice was smaller than I'm accustomed to getting at a restaurant, but the flavor, moistness & taste made up for it! It's a hole in the wall, that's delivering great flavors! I can't wait to return & get that burger again! The staff was friendly. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant.

Where do I start?…read more Came in on a Sunday evening with my family and this place was a mess from start to finish. Nearly 30-minute wait, then seated at a dirty table that hadn't been cleared from the previous guests. Mid-way through taking our drink order, our server just... walked away. Never came back to finish. Apps came out before drinks. When my kid's Sprite arrived it was carbonated water -- when we flagged a manager, we were told they were out of Sprite. Would've been nice to know that upfront. The water I ordered never came at all. Meals were room temperature. Server never checked back in -- we had to track her down just to pay and leave. Meanwhile I watched a manager in a black polo leaning against the wall while the carpeted floors were visibly dirty. There's a saying about leaning and cleaning for a reason. Four stars on Yelp is genuinely baffling based on this experience. Two stars is generous. Won't be back, and wouldn't send anyone else here either.

For lunch, I ordered the Oxtails plate (served with white rice + cornbread) with a choice of three sides. I opted for the Baked Mac & Cheese, Steamed Cabbage, and Luscious Collard Greens. The taste of the food was fantastic. The savory oxtails smothered in gravy were tender. All of the sides were flavorful and met expectations. For everything, it was priced at $29.99, which was quite reasonable considering the portion size. The inside of the restaurant was cozy with a family-friendly diner feel. The music playing was very entertaining. Each table had a great variety of condiments available, including hot sauces, ketchup, mustard, etc. Overall, J.W. Beverette's Soul Food was a solid choice for experiencing comforting, delicious soul food. If I weren't visiting from California and resided in Alabama, I'd totally be a regular customer at this restaurant. I will be sure to visit here should I travel to Alabama again.

I feel like this place needs some love so I'm gonna come from the heart with this one…read more I am in town for eight weeks as part of a project for work, this is week 6/8 and I have ran out of restaurants that I like and I needed a change. There might be a slight asterisk to this review but I am confident that had I not been severely hung over at 8 o'clock at night it would still be great. I had to get some supplies for the week at target which is in the Eastchase area so I just decided to drive around and explore the suburban metropolis I know as Montgomery, Alabama. I was driving around for literally an hour and nothing seemed to look good at all so as I passed the "Aura" adult entertainment factory towards downtown I noticed that there was a captain D's( irony is perfect) and a couple other restaurants on the left side of the road. I did my best version of an Alabama bat turn and power slide into the parking lot of this place called Al's. During the process of doing my best Vin Diesel impression of Fast and Furious I noticed only one truck in the parking lot so I decided to park and look at the menu. I was scrolling through the menu faster than a teenager scrolling through Twitter and the parking lot began to fill up, before I knew it there were eight cars in the drive-through line so I decided to ghost ride the whip and hop in line. During my 20 minute wait( The sign clearly states of food is cooked to order which I greatly appreciate) I began to second-guess my decision if I must admit the truth. My decision soon became validated when the sweetheart who was taking orders took my money and gave me some steaming styrofoam and the aroma of wing sauce and wings soon began to permeate the cockpit of this Kia optima I was driving. My hotel is a short five minute drive but that seemed like a true eternity given that I was hung over and now it the intoxicating smell was running through the car. While the car was still moving somehow I put it in park and ran up the stairs to my room. See picture and bc video for this awesome eating experience. I simply opened up the box and started munching like I have never had a chicken wing before. The sauce is good and the fries were as well so to summarize it was great, give AL's a try, I am glad I did. ** my only negative experience with this was of course the buttermilk ranch that came in a Keurig looking coffee pod. If Al's were to make their own house ranch this would truly be a 10 out of 10. My advice would be to seek out the ranch from Wingstop a couple miles down the road and you will set yourself up for success.
