Bet the amount of time I've spent on a bike all rolled together adds into years worth of time. Grew up on them in the city, was an NYC bike messenger before the internet killed them like it killed travel agents, weekend round trips from SF to top of Tam and back again later on which was brutal but perfect. But a few weekends ago we were all what shall we do why not head to Monterey and rent a bike and ride on that cool trail from downtown along the dunes to who knows where. Besides the bicycles themselves, which were tuned with good tires and brakes and perfect for the task, the entire experience was top shelf. Clean shop, many new and used bikes that I now long for again and need to move out of super Mario land so I can ride again. Professional helpful friendly staff. Their workbench in service shop area was so clean! Good mechanics take care of their tools. Had a day trip to Monterey and the weather was so nice we decided to find a bike rental place. Although this isn't primarily a bike rental place, the service was top notch, it was quick, easy and affordable! We rented 2 standard bikes for 1 hour and 20 minutes and only paid $32. From here, it is a short walk to the wharf which is where you can hop on the coastal trail ( flat). We cycled to Lover's Point and back and stopped a few times for photos and to admire the gorgeous coast. I recommend walking in the area of Aquarium due to massive lines but otherwise, you just need to enjoy the ride and be mindful of people walking the trail and other folks on bikes. If you want regular bikes, or are into fancy bikes and accessories, this is a great friendly and local business to support! read more

Bought bike shoes 2 days ago. I tried them today in 10 minutes ride around the home. Shoes cause my feet to hurt. The store doesn't accept returns. Update: This was not a special order or sale, this pair of shoes were recommended to me by a staff member. There was no option to try shoes in the store on a bike. The staff and salesperson did NOT let me know that there is NO return policy on shoes. Sorry, but wasting more money in your store is not the kind of help I was expecting. Decided on-the-fly to rent bikes to work off a huge brunch we had at Rosine's. Initially, my yelp search led me to Adventures By The Sea, which had more reviews and the typical marked up prices ($20/hr). At the time of my search, Workhorse had no photos but 3 stellar 5-Star reviews. Decided to give them a call to get prices, which cemented the decision to give them a try. $9/hr for a standard bike is a sweet deal! We were greeted immediately upon arrival and had our bikes in no time. They have a 9-min grace period and we made it back within 7-min. Also, you can drop off your rentals at their other locations as well (there's one at Cannery Row). Super convenient and easy on the wallet. Older guy here: I bought my first bike here besides having many Target/Walmart level bikes years ago. I came armed with the funds from my stimulus check and for about $800 got I wonderful bike to help me exercise outdoors. The customer service was excellent and I came away with a great bike I ride at least twice a week. My only suggestion is that the sales staff learn more about the need of us older guys/girls. I asked if they had good knowledge on the subject and was told "yea, we all do". I don't know much about bikes but committed to doing a sprint triathlon, so I brought in a bike that I borrowed from a friend that had been sitting in a garage for at least 8 years. Love this place. Not only is it in a lovely building giving me all the right vibes, they are also super helpful, priced really well, and just super nice. We borrowed two bikes and kept each for almost five hours. Total? $36 each!!! There are other places that will easily charge you close to $50 for that long! Bikes were good too. They all come with helmet and lock. The bikes each have a little pouch up front for a lock and a bar or something. And they also have a place for a drink or water bottle. Helpful staff took my questions while quickly fixing someone else's flat tube (for $15 parts and labor, reasonable if you ask me). They had a couple small parts I needed and a bike tube for a friend for $8 (same as Amazon actually). I was happily surprised that they are are Jamis dealer - love my steel Jamis bikes (Coda Sport and Aurora). Jamis is a great bike that's affordable and the shop reflected that generally: pumps and tubes were not over priced, bike prices were normal, shop prices were a little more than I'm used to but it's a tourist area and they could have easily been charging more. The shop area was right in front and you could see everything they were doing which is generally a good sign. Only wish they were open sooner on weekends but that's not a real complaint. Good rental business and some affordable used bikes parked out front looked like deals. They gave good advice about local rides and limited access to the closed part of Highway One. Really enjoyed riding Monterey's 17-mile Drive and the bike trial that runs north of town. 80 miles over a few days made easier with parts and suggestions from Ryan and others at Workhorse, thanks! read more
