But, to be bluntly transparent about this, even though my activities fit The Columbia Lifestyle, my girth prevents me from fitting most of The Columbia Clothing. Still, some of the garments are more amply proportioned than the marked sizing would suggest, so I have the two sweaters to show for my repeated efforts to find more gear. I nearly bought gloves yesterday, just because they fit. I did buy another pair of Columbia shoes yesterday, though. But from a oligarchy-compliant online retailer, not from the local store in Monterey. Why? Because I was able to try on the right size, though not (for my preferences) in the right color. The right color was available, but not in my size. And special orders are not possible, reportedly, from the local store. So, we funded a little more fuel for the rich man's rocket. But for whatever disappointment there could have been, yesterday's twenty minutes in the Monterey Columbia store was one of the better shopping experiences I've had in quite a while. Even though the eventual sale was clearly going to be made outside the local brick-and-mortar, Store Manager Sam made sure we were able to confirm the right size for the right color so that we could order online (from someone other than Columbia, since the rocket-owner ships to us for free) with relative confidence. We'll be back to see what fits in the future. Make that "the near future." Those gloves were pretty nice.

I went in looking for a vest but bought a jacket. I got the Heavenly Hooded Jacket in black. It's like a puffer jacket but sleek not bulky, light weight but very warm, special thermal lining, with sleeve inserts that you insert your thumb on like fingerless gloves but can be worn like normal sleeves. Yes it was costly but I will get plenty of use out of it. I wore it horseback riding today. I haven't bought a parka coat since 2000. I'm hopeful this jacket lasts as long as my Lands End parks has.

The gal then informed me that the warehouse was empty of the pants I was looking for; that if I still wanted them, I could call up local stores. So I called the two in SF. Burlingame. Palo Alto. San Jose. Corte Madera. Ironically none of these locations were nice enough to check the company's inventory; they all gave me lame excuses and pushed me to buy a totally different pair. Um... no. When I called Monterey, Tisha suggested that she would check the inventory levels and give me a call back. An hour later, I got the phone call. Let's face it, nobody likes an eyefull of their own bumps and lumps while passing their reflection. We gals like it smoothed out... even to the point of downright false advertising. For a while I was on a HardTail kick. Their pants are great for yoga and pretty flattering. I decided to try Lucy pants after a friend, Sarah (aka Miss Fitness Monterey) recommended them. Her buns are always something to behold. Hehe... $300 later I walked out with 4 pairs: Organic Satya, Organic Hatha, Hatha Power Pant and Perfect Core Pant. The ladies at the store were delightful. They showered me with attention and showed the kids to their toy area. I don't torture my kids with fitting rooms. I just buy what I like, bring it home and return whatever doesn't work. Even so, it was nice to have them occupied while I shopped. And if I ever decide to change my policy on parenting vs. shopping, I wouldn't be opposed to trying things on here because the staff is very kid friendly. More than most children's stores in fact.

You can tell she knows what she's doing and wants to make sure everyone feels confident while kayaking. I also want to mention the two phone encounters I had were so helpful and kind (unfortunately I did not catch their names) and the person who checked us in was also so pleasant.

They gave an informational overview of where to paddle to see wildlife as well as other recommendations and safety tips. They provide life jackets, waterproof jackets and pants which were great too keep water off your clothes. There are porto potties available if you need to use the facilities. The staff were well very nice and helpful. The main con of our trip was the two person top sitting kayak we were on seemed to have problems with steering. No matter how hard we tried to turn right, the kayak always tended to veer the other direction which was frustrating. We got another kayak to check if they saw anything wrong visually on the water, but they couldn't see anything so maybe there was something going on with the underside of the kayak. Besides that, we had a nice time on the water and were able to enjoy seeing all the birds and cute otters and seals out and about. Later in the morning and early afternoon we even got to see the otters get more active and go diving for mud worms that looked like bright orange cigars. It was super cute seeing the otters sleeping nested in the kelp too. Try not to disturb them though since they need to conserve energy to stay warm! We unfortunately saw one tour group led by a guide that went right next to a sleeping pod of otters and woke them all up. Overall, fun place to go kayaking with wildlife! Glad we went on this trip here!
