After eating here I wanted to give a new restaurant a review so others can enjoy the same experience. Let me start by saying I scrolled through a bunch of the already posted reviews... For those people who pulled up expecting a tony's pizzeria, why not just order delivery? It's obvious from the outside driving by it's not a "neon light out front saying open pizzeria" This is not your average pizza joint.
I tried out Wood Stack last Saturday. There were 4 of us in our party. Pulling up and realizing it was valet only was a bit different. The valet attendant was pleasant and I was informed of the notification ticket service they used. Your ticket is pulled up on your phone and you alert them when you want your car ready when you're ready to leave. Pretty cool, never had that before at a restaurant.
Upon entering there was an expected wait. It's a saturday night after all. We were told it was about a 20-25 minute wait which was fine and we proceeded to the bar for some drinks as we looked around.
The decor was simple. A very "wood" influenced theme which matches the name. It is called Wood Stack after all. While enjoying some of NJ's local beer choices (yes local beer on the menu, Love it!), I got into a conversation with the bar tender about the decor. Apparently it's all re-purposed wood and has a very interesting story behind it. Again, they followed a theme all throughout the place and did so very well. Bonus points for a John Muir quote on the wall !
Maybe it was just us, but we were very impressed with the atmosphere.
Now to the best part. The food and the service. Our waitress was awesome! She greeted us right away once we were sat and offered information on any questions we might of had. She informed us of "everything is made in house" all across the menu. Looking over the menu, although not a huge multi-page selection, there was quality choices to cover each course.
We ate everything family style and tried the meatballs, sausage and peppers and caprese. All were great but the meatballs were incredible.
2 of us also had salads, a wood stack and a tuscan kale. Interesting combinations for the salads and again, different than the normal everyday restaurant. Also was informed the dressings were also all made in house.
We continued on with 2 pizzas, (margherita & seppe pies), Bolognese, eggplant lasagna, chicken plancha, and prosciutto piselli. Between the 4 of us, there was PLENTY to go around as we all tried a little of everything. The freshness all throughout was obvious and filled with flavor. Our waitress kept up with us in refilling our drinks. Yes, the alcoholic beverages are superb here, but to not have to have watered down coke or pepsi and Boylan's instead? You just don't see that often enough. After an enjoyable dinner, having a bite of everything, and drinks, I sent notification to the valet for our car right as the check was being delivered.
I'm not sure what issues may have happened on other nights, but we did not experience any of them. When we walked out, our car was parked in front waiting for us.
I'd like to express again, the level of service our waitress offered, all throughout the meal, she was there with a smile and they were packed. Was one of the best service experiences in a long time. Part of our dinner conversation was admiring the atmosphere and we watched our server juggling multiple tables in a packed house and did so with excellence.
Overall, I have to say we were very pleased with the experience. Yes, it could use some expanded menu choices, but then again, it saved us from staring at a menu for 20 mins trying to make decisions. The food is different, and all quality dinning, the atmosphere is great, we loved the open kitchen design and seeing everything. Fine dinning in a much cooler decor. The staff was absolutely phenomenal.
I look forward to Wood Stack's success and visiting here again. If you're looking for quality dinning that isn't like everywhere else, I highly recommend visiting. (keep in mind, this is not your "grab by the slice" pizza place, this is quality dinning.) read more
