Waiting for our food to arrive... so good
Joy L.

Always excellent without fail. Going here is like going to your Korean grandma's house. It's cozy, not fancy. They take care of you, give you lots of tasty treats and take care of you. They always give you waaaay more freebie appetizers than any other Korean place in town, and they're always different. They small team of people that take care of you are so nice. We just love this place. Honestly, there's no reason to go anywhere else. This is Korean food home.

side dishes and kimchi chigyae

food: ordered hot stone pot bibimbap and kimchi chigyae. both were delicious! loved all the little side dishes ( ) that came with the meal too. service: quick and friendly. food arrived fast and very hot. server answered all our questions about the food and had some good suggestions about flavors. ambiance: warm, good lighting and comfortable seating. music was quiet so we could easily speak to each other and our server. would definitely eat here again!

Chicken Bulgogi, Hot Stone Bibimbap, various Banchan. Delicious

Wasn't sure where to eat tonight, but Wonju Korean Cuisine popped up, as having had some 5 star ratings, so i took a look at the menu, and thought "Ok, there are options i can try" The dining room is cosy, and feels warm and quite intimate, with a good family feel. Lots of plants, and the walls are covered with pictures of menu items, in case you're unfamiliar with Korean food. I ordered Chicken Bulgogi, because i know i love bulgogi, and husband ordered Hot Stone Bibimbap. The menu said that each of our dishes came with side dishes, mine said 4, and his said 5. Which was one of the things i was very curious about. I've watched MANY K dramas, modern, historical, romantic, i love them, and am always intrigued by those little dishes that accompany the foods. So our server, before we were even seated, took our drink order. Anyway, it wasn't a long wait before she came out with a rolling trolley. The whole bottom of the tray was FILLED with Banchan (those intriguing little side dishes) We were also served soup, which had a similar flavour profile to miso soup, and was light, and warming. I counted the banchan (17) because it was a lot, but i was highly excited to try some. I like kimchi, and there was some kimchi, but most everything else, i had no clue about. One was cilantro, which seemed to have been lightly blanched. There was a delicious pickled spinach one, i could have eaten loads of those, some fried tofu, various noodle dishes, and maybe I think some other seaweeds? Eggplant, cucumber, and one that was yellow and tasted fruity. No clue what that was but we both enjoyed sampling those, and i am grateful for the large portion we were served. The chicken bulgogi was packed full of flavour, and made with thighs, so the chicken was juicy, and carried the flavour well. Lovely sticky rice. Husband enjoyed his bibimbap, and as it's a bit on the chilly side today, he kept grabbing the bowl and holding on, to get warm. He particularly enjoyed the crunchy bits of sizzled rice. As for the staff - absolutely wonderful! As we were leaving, the table behind us had some staff members sitting there, and one young lady became quite enthralled by my coat. So i did a fashion show for her and displayed all the features, and finished up with a runway walk. She took a picture of the (Orolay) label, and noted my tip that on Black Friday, Amazon halve the price of these jackets. Even so, they are a good priced coat, and well suited to our temperatures. It was a fun five minutes, and really served to make me feel that i was a valuable customer and not just another face. Thanks for the experience. I'll be back for more!!

Great way to start your meal

Don't let the location or store front fool you, this place is really good. Tucked away off Fireweed Ave in Anchorage nestled between a liquor store and shady massage place is a great Korean Restaurant. Like any legit Korean Restaurant you are met with a very pragmatic dining room, super clean, eccentric decor and great service. My favorite, kimchi and all the other fermented goodness, is abundant! I had the dumplings, they were good. The Ramen was really good And the Bulgogi was the best I've had in Alaska! If you're craving an authentic Korean experience, give them a try.

Bulgogi and Kimchee Pancake

Large portions. Banchans-- A LOT of variety! The besssssst kimchee pancake I've ever had hands down Allow some time for service. There's one/two servers during lunch time but well worth the wait

Kimchi jaeyuk tofu

Since my first review, restaurant has changed its name and sign from Wonjo Tofu House to Wonjo Korean Cuisine, presumably to differentiate itself from Tofu House on Arctic. My mom and I ordered takeout from here because we assumed they were closed for dine-in due to the most recent COVID-19 shutdown. When I went to pick up the food, I found out they are open for dine-in by reservation only. Everything appeared clean and well-spaced. Unfortunately, our two favorite entrees were inexplicably removed from the menu. When my mom tried to order kimchi jaeyuk tofu (pictured below) for me, she was informed that was taken off the menu over a year ago. Similarly my mom's favorite soybean stew is no longer on the menu. The menu currently posted on their website still has these items, so clearly it has not been updated recently. The restaurant has virtually no online presence so I had no way of checking social media for an updated menu, and the most recent photos on Yelp and elsewhere are at least a year or two old. That aside, the food was delicious as ever. I got the spicy pork bulgogi lunch special. Despite being a lunch special, the portion sizes are huge and I got two meals for the price of one. The banchan are wrapped in foil in the box which is a nice way to keep them separated. This time one of the sides included was hot dog slices which struck me as a little odd. I've never been to any Korean restaurant that had hot dogs as a side dish. They weren't bad, but I definitely preferred all the other vegetable sides. I'd give this place 4.5 stars now but I'm keeping it at 5 here because I have fond memories of coming here for lunch when I lived in Anchorage and the server is a sweetheart. If you're looking for quality Korean food for takeout or dine-in, Wonjo is a great option.

Banchan

Very authentic delicious Korean food. The mackerel was delicious and not too salty like I have found at other Korean spots around town. They have soju and Korean beer. I also really like the cold noodles and the big array of banchan sides. Would definitely recommend this spot.

Seafood Tofu Soup
Dexter R.

I used to go here often when they specialized in tofu stews but management now seems to have changed since then. Plain and simple this is not good value. The soup tasted alright but it was really overpriced. Most things are $20+ per person, with bbq being $30. After living in Korea I'm sure I won't find anything comparable outside of LA or NYC but none of the ingredients here looked very fresh. The banchan (side dishes) were either really old or just had no flavor. If you wanna try Korean food, it's better to take the time to find a recipe online and cook it yourself or visit a big city.

There's something about the best Asian restaurant in Anchorage being in discreet locations something about it makes them that much better. Won Jo is a clean comfy restaurant nestled between a liquor store and massage parlor (one of the kinds you kind of don't want to know about). Don't let that deter you, the food and service is outstanding. Between the few times I've been here, I've gotten the hot pot with silky tofu as well as the lunch special spicy chicken bulgolgi. Both were very tasty and piping hot. Something in the sauces and broth make the flavors stand out. Our hostess and waitress kept our water glasses full. She's very friendly and personable as well. Korean food is typically pretty expensive so I'd say it's about average pricing here.

Everything was so good and the ladies are very sweet. We will be back for sure. We got the yuk game jang which had the perfect amount of spice for a hangover lol, bulgogi, and pork kimchi tofu thing that was also amazing. Everything

But the macaroni salad...weird? Or am I missing something? It tasted like run of the meal, store bought macaroni salad. Is it for the non fermenters? Cause that ain't me! Those fermented side dishes were the stars, until the bibimbap came out. The clay pot was more a large plate, but it was HOT and it made the rice exactly like I like it: crispy on the bottom and soft on the top. All the accoutrements were tasty and blended well with the rice and sauce. I wasn't sure what each of them were, so I tried a little bit at a time. They all had some unique savory flavors. In the end I mixed them all together for a final flash and bang of flavor. Service was excellent. Maybe the owner, maybe the manager was also seated at the bar and he stopped by at the end of my meal to ask about everything. Friendly and professional. The restaurant is clean and has great lighting. When one walks in, the bbq side is to the right and there is a bar area to the left. There is both tables and bar seating.

They gave solid recommendations and even offered to start grilling the meats for us, which was a nice gesture and made the whole experience feel easy and chill. Prices are honestly very reasonable for Alaska, especially for Korean BBQ. They have a variety of tasty banchan--everything tasted fresh and flavorful, and there was a good variety to keep things interesting between bites. Overall, great food, great service, and just an all-around good spot to hang out, eat way too much meat, and have a good time. Definitely coming back.

When we arrived things we a little disorganized when they seated us, but the team was pleasant. But after that, things got weird. Our primary server Alaya had some seriously bad vibes that felt... directed at us. We watched the way she interacted with other people and it was definitely specific to our party. After we placed our order and the meat arrived as she was placing meat on the grill she dumped blood all over my side of the table and into my dipping sauces and I wondered if it was intentional, but I didnt say anything. Then she placed TWO WHOLE TRAYS OF MEAT ON THE GRILL at once which they are not supposed to do due to cross contamination and it takes too long for things to cook. Since you only have your table for 90 minutes, I also wondered if this was intentional. She didn't come back to check on us and I had to push the call bell to ask for help to turn up the heat since 20 minutes later the meat was still raw. Then when it was time to change to chicken they usually change the grill plate because the plate gets very smokey. She completely ignored us when I called for help. And when she finally did come back she let raw meat plates on our table, which I know they are not supposed to do. She kept giving us weird nasty looks- it was so strange. We were nice to her- i have no idea what her issue was. On our way out, we mentioned to the cashier how Alaya had ruined our experience. She asked if it felt "targeted"- so I think they've gotten, other complaints about her. We spent over $2oo on a 3 person meal, but i can assure you we won't be back if we're going to be treated like that. I'll save my business for WonJo.

Always look at newest reviews!!!…read more We saw the 4.4 red stars and thought this was gona be an amazing place. The first red flag was 1pm on week day and there was only 3 parties in the place. The one and only server was very nice, but being the only one, twice when new parties entered he would walk away. Wife ordered chicken katsu rice plate. The overall theme is everything is bland. EVERYTHING.. Her cabbage slaw/salad had a white creamy sauce, my best guess is mayo mixed with ranch but only if both was every kind of free there is, fat, sugar, carb, keto, and most importantly, taste FREE. Her rice was purple, there were purple chunks, not sure if it was potato, the rice was mushy, wet, and Bland. Her kutsu sauce was made from the same everything free ingredients. Come on man, Kutsu sauce is 3 ingredients and all three are bold flavors, how do you mess that up. But ok, they want to be fusion, maybe add some cilantro or chili. She asked for soy sauce and salt to try and add some flavor. Half way through she has me hold out my hand and pours a handful of the "salt" from the shaker. It was not salt granules, almost looked like a salt substitute. I honestly don't know what it was but when I tasted it I would be extremely generous by saying I got a 25% salt flavor. Normally, you put 2-4 tablespoons of salt in your hand and lick your finger, when you taste that, you get a powerful punch in the mouth of dam, that's salty. I was dumbfounded, if they are using that "salt" to cook with them makes since why everything is so bland. I don't want to repeat the Bland Bland Bland theme over and over. I had bulgogi, kutsu, and BBQ chicken tacos. I will skip to the end- yep, you guessed it, Bland. We did have the bulgogi egg roll, I do want to touch on this only because I was so mad at myself once we left I dug Into the reviews. These are one of the most positive commented items, BUT those comments are from over a year ago. Overall, 11$ for two small egg rolls cut in half is ridiculous. Then if you bite/taste just the egg roll, there is a 5% taste of bulgogi sauce. Which again is so explosive of a sauce. But, If you drown the egg roll in the creamy mild sriracha sauce then the egg roll is ok. If you forget what it should taste like and just concentrate on how did they make the sauce with no heat, then you could get at least a 2-2.5 star. Server deserves 5 stars, Food deserves 2 stars.

If you manage to grab them before they're sold out, try the Korean food - they sell kimbahp and jokbal near the register, and there is banchan towards the back. They even offer some of the less mainstream Korean treats, which is a pleasant surprise. I do wish they had more snacks, drinks, and sweets, but their overall merchandise range is diverse, and the vegetables appeared fresh. Definitely worth taking a peak if you're not intimidated by non-English signage.
