I saw this place on insta so took a solo lunch date, ordered the single smash, cheese curds, curly fries, and olive oil & sea salt malt. The gal working the front taking my order really lacked personality, and the place was very potent with oil smell, like you're going to smell like it when you leave. 3 tables in the back to sit at or chairs lined up next to eachother for a "bar" like seating which is great for solo and with one other person. Absolute hidden gem! When I say hidden, I mean hidden. I was looking right at it and wasn't sure it was there. Stepping through the front door I was greeted with some fun taxidermy. Being a native upper midwesterner this made me feel right at home. We ordered at the register (order #1... score!!!), and grabbed a table in the back. Craving a smash burger, this place came up with good reviews. We arrived around 11:30am am parked around the corner from the restaurant. The restaurant was empty and the woman behind the counter welcomed us in. The restaurant was long and narrow with the front area (where you order and wait for to go orders) then walk down the hall past the kitchen to a few tables to eat at. We get in on a Friday night. You wouldn't think Madison, which sits underneath the on-ramp to the Hawthorne Bridge, would be bustling at 7 on a Friday, but here we are. There is a downright scene on the street. A band is playing. Punks are milling about. One person looks straight Goth. I walk through the mess of punks and up to the stairs to Wolf's Head and open the door. The burger is a fairly standard smashburger, but very well made. The malted milkshake is fantastic. If you have a burger craving, Wolf's Head is the spot you have been searching for. It's not every day you can feel like you are part of a 50s diner scene, except the greasers have gone full punk or become the undead. There aren't many burger joints in Portland you can go to, and a live band is playing out front. If that's your scene, you've got some good eats. We stopped by here in the late afternoon after working up an appetite on a bike ride. It was a little hard to tell if they were open-the door is a cage-like metal material and it almost looked closed. But we were in luck and there was a lull in business so we had the place to ourselves. The guy at the counter where you order patiently answered our questions about the offerings on the board behind him. Basically they have smash burgers (singles or doubles) with all the good stuff like cheese, caramelized onions, etc. I paid $1.00 extra for lettuce & tomato and my husband added lettuce & a fried egg to his.
