Sauvignon Blanc & Cab from HH menu ($10)
    Kahlie M.

FINALLY I had the chance to experience this hidden GEM of a restaurant located inside the fully restored Beau Hotel, originally built in 1886. After walking by several times, I was so excited to finally step foot inside and just wow, the renovation alone is stunning. Dark, elegant, intimate and classy vibes GALORE! My friend and I sat at the end of the bar (which has incredibly comfortable bar stools with height adjustments AND purse hangers- bonus pts for us ladies!) We visited on a Tuesday at 4:30pm for HH. Each of us ordered two glasses of the house white and red wine (the sauvignon blanc was perfect as well as my friends cab!). Both were fantastic. We shared the pork tacos and the caesar salad. Both were absolutely delicious. The Caesar even had anchovies and a perfect dressing to match. Our bartender was super friendly and attentive, checking in on us constantly. We were having such a great time already, when the Food & Service Director, Jesse, approached us an asked if we wanted to take a full tour of the hotel! My heart sank because I am a die hard fan of historic/spooky buildings. The renovations are breathtaking and the details exquisite! Original redwood banister stairways lead you up to the second and third stories, there's an adorable outdoor patio that makes you feel like you're in the middle of Manhattan. This is such a rarity in downtown SD so I was taken aback by the entire experience! Jesse even told us about the spirits/ghosts that "reside" at the hotel which I loved to hear about. The history here is wild, there's even a "speakasy" that used to exist in the back during Prohibition era that we got to see! There is so much to see and explore here, I'm so happy to see this beautiful building restored. Cannot WAIT to come back for a full dinner/date night and to stay in one of the 51 rooms in the hotel for a staycation. Thank you so much to Jesse and the team at Witherby!

I love the old school vibe of this restaurant. I'm glad we stumbled upon this place because every dish was amazing! We went based off our server Jeremy's recommendations- who was wonderful btw and so much fun to talk to. The food was cooked to perfection - pork shank was fall off the bone delicious. We also ordered crab cakes, beef cheek, Spanish octopus, duck pot pie, crispy potatoes & brussels sprouts.. you can't go wrong with any of those. Don't forget to save room for dessert because the bread pudding was tasty!

My husband made reservations for us to dine at the Witherby on Valentine's Day. The Witherby is the new restaurant with a speakeasy vibe in the newly renovated boutique Beau Hotel downtown. When we walked in, it definitely had the speakeasy feel... as it had a long, striking bar with low lights and a retro flair. Upon talking with our server, we learned that the restaurant in fact used to be a speakeasy, with the back walkway, known as Prohibition Alley. I peaked in the event room, which was not currently in use, but had rumors of poker games with guests such as Al Capone. We were seated and greeted readily by both the host and the server. We were then given a drink menu, as well as a prix fixe Valentine menu. We began with cocktails, as they had an extensive crafted cocktail menu. I had a cocktail called the Diabolita. It was amazing! It was a tequila cocktail with something called "fire bitters" that was not spicy at all, but gave it a kick, almost like a bit of pop rock candy, but without the sweetness. My husband had a lavender gin cocktail which was good, but a bit more traditional The Valentine's prix fixe menu allowed us to share our first course, then choose our own second course, and then share our main course and dessert. For our first course we shared the octopus which was perfectly tender, well flavored and served with a hummus which complimented it nicely. For the second course, my husband enjoyed the Cesar salad. I chose the Vicysoisse. I enjoyed it, but it needed a bit more seasoning. For our main course, we chose the Surf and Turf for two, which was a Filet with scallops served with broccolini. The proteins were cooked perfectly. The broccolini was charred nicely, and had a tasty seasoning. Probably my least favorite part of the meal was the tiramisu. Tiramisu is easily my favorite dessert. However, this was a bit deconstructed. The ladyfingers were quite hard and had not absorbed the espresso flavor. That was the only dish that truly disappointed me. Aside from that I really enjoyed the meal. Service was friendly, but very slow. I do not think this new restaurant was ready for Valentine's Day. First, they had told us that they were out of octopus, but we ended up with the last plate. Then we ordered a wine we were excited about, but they were out. It was strange to me that they were out, as the red wine bottle menu was actually quite small. We then chose a Syrah that they did have, but it took forever for them to actually bring it out. It actually took forever for them to bring anything out after the second course. Luckily, we did not have any plans after dinner, as it would not have worked out. I might have ordered a dessert cocktail at the end of the evening, but I was afraid of how long it would have taken. All in all, the place is absolutely stunning and the food and coktails are very good. I'm not certain about the service as Valentine's Day is sometimes the "Great Equalizer" when it comes to restaurant service. I had a lovely Valentine's Day at the Witherby with my husband, but I think they could have done better. Perhaps we will give them another chance on a non-holiday.

If I could give 10 stars I would. What a charming, delightful restaurant. The service and food were outstanding at this establishment. We started off with a charcuterie board which had soppressata, prosciutto, 2 types of cheeses, cornichon and a sweet tasty jam. In addition we hap the octopus which was absolutely delicious. For our entrees I had the pork shank which was fall off the bone delicious. It was so delicious, I loved it. My girlfriend had the duck put pie which she really loved. Our friends ordered the short rib and the shrimp linguini. Everyone was so impressed with the great flavors and the expert playing. For dessert we had the angel food cake, tiramisu and bread pudding. Each dessert was delicious and so good. Our server was Sarah and she was phenomenal. She knew the menu items inside out. In addition she was friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this place.

Came here with my friend for their happy hour. We sat at the bar for some tacos, Cesar salad, and wine 8/10. After eating, their GM offered a tour of the place. Not only is it so unique with its spacious hallways, tall ceilings, and original brick walls/wooden staircase... it had a modern twist with its new renovations without losing its nostalgic charm from back in the day. Would like to stay here one day 9/10. He was friendly and is truly passionate on the stories and the future stories, yet to come, of the place. Service was 10/10. The ambiance is amazing so giving it a 11/10. Feeling thankful we found this hidden gem in downtown.

A trendy little bar with old school flare, nestled in a boutique hotel lobby. It's not huge but that only adds to the ambience. Went for happy hour because we wanted to try the place out and they boast $10 drinks and a variety of happy hour plates. Yours truly had a scotch and soda; not flamboyant but it got the job done. We shared French fries and a charcuterie board. The fries were awesome and come piled high in a bowl with 3 dipping sauces - the green chile cream sauce being the best of the 3. The charcuterie board came with salami, capicola, manchego, Swiss, honeycomb, cornichons, crostini and a seasonal pumpkin spread. It was perfect for two people and all ingredients were fresh. Great time overall and friendly service. There was an awkward 15 minute period where the only person working seemed to be the bartender and he appeared a little overwhelmed by the line of people accumulating. Everyone survived. I think his help was maybe just on a break because after about 15 minutes it was back to normal. I'd go back for actual dinner next time.

I love the boujie ambiance of this new restaurant that just opened this year! The dark green velvet booths with the leather seating exudes fine dining at an affordable price point. Situated in the historic Beau Hotel, this restaurant is far enough away from the noises of Downtown SD but close enough so that you can still enjoy the nightlife. Our waitress, Sara, was more than amazing! She has given me one of the best services I've had in a restaurant. Also, the servers and wait staff made sure we were all well taken cared of. I was early enough to partake in some of the Happy Hour food which was: Fries for $7 - Looks plain but it's perfectly crisp with the right amount of salt and it's amazing with all the sauces it comes with. Hummus & Crudités for $14- This was fresh dish and enjoyed all the vibrant veggies on this dish. Caesar Salad for $13- There was actually an anchovy on top to signal the homemade Caesar dressing on this dish! I had the Mary's Chicken which was still great the day after as leftovers! It was a tad dry but it was pretty good with the Cassoulet. The Prime NY Steak was juicy and I liked the potato side that came with it! The salmon was also pretty good with a crisp skin paired with quinoa. The quinoa was a bit sour due to the vinaigrette. Since we were celebrating a birthday, the birthday girl got a bread pudding. It was super rich and dense. Can easily be shared. Loved the ambiance of this place and we were treated with a tour of the hotel with one of the staff as our tour guide. Loved our evening at this place!

The Witherby is a new spot inside the Beau hotel that follows the theme of the hotel stylistically. I came for restaurant week. The hostess and server were hith very nice but a bit disorganized with getting me seated then quite a delay before I ordered through the hostess since the waitress still had not stopped by. They also seved my entree and dessert at the same time. The dessert had a warm bread pudding and ice cream. It makes no sense to serve both the entree and a dessert together but with that dessert it especially didnt make sense. These hiccups cost the 5th star. I'd loke to chalk it up to the restaurant being newer and working out some kinks The food was very good. The beef cheek app was awesome. The duck pot pie was very tasty. Thick and hearty with a flakey bread if some sort on top. I really loved the dessert which was excellent. I would definitely get the beef cheek and bread pudding again, but I would probably go for a different entree when I return, even though it was good

Their food was absolutely delicious. The creative and excellent flavor and texture combination of their dishes was truly impressive. 1) The hamachi crudo was fresh, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. 2) Every time we see octopus on the menu, we always order it, but not every time is it outstandingly good. However, the Spanish octopus at Witherby was a standout. It was tender and juicy, and the comforting polenta was a perfect complement. The highlight of the dish was the Cajun popcorn, which added a delightful crunch. A spoonful of everything was simply divine! 3) The beef cheek was a delightful surprise. The extra tender and juicy beef tender was flavorful, and the crispy chickpeas added a delightful crunch. The soft and slightly crispy naan bread was a perfect accompaniment. 4) Chicken pot pie is a common dish, but the duck pot pie definitely caught my eye because I prefer something different. It was rich and hearty, with a light, crispy, and layered pastry on top. The combination of flavors was simply irresistible. 5) Their signature dish, the pork shank, was incredible. The meat was tender and juicy, falling off the bones. A little bit of fat meat added a rich and flavorful depth to the dish. Witherby stands out in a sea of similar restaurants in downtown. It's a must-visit for foodies!

Stumbled upon this little gem of a restaurant and what a fortunate thing. Food was delicious. The octopus appetizer was delicious. The specialty drinks were tasty too. Had a nice chat with Jesse, Director of Food and Beverage, who gave us a little history of how they opened. We were served by Sarah who was delightful. Will certainly be back.

Great atmosphere, cool bar and great staff! Started with a spicy margarita... FYI they carry Lala... not many places do so I was happy! We were a larger group and ordered a lot of the small plates. I'm a sucker for broccolini and hummus. Both did not disappoint. The hummus had beef cheek over it which did not disappoint. I had the pork shank. It fell off the bone. The potato's on the small plates is a good shared side dish! The aioli was great, wish it had a little more to dip. Dessert was great! I recommend the banana crepe brûlée.

I have a backlog of reviews I need to post but I wanted to post this first because of the wonderful experience we had eating here twice! The hotel and restaurant is in a historic building with cute little lamps on marble tables for an elegant dining experience. We had a reservation at The Beau Hotel and we came in the morning so we decided to eat here for breakfast. We ordered the duck hash, poached egg with polenta & chorizo, and quiche Lorraine. My favorite was the duck hash because there was a generous amount of duck along with crispy potatoes topped with over easy eggs. The server noticed the quiche slice was a bit small and gave us another slice which we appreciated. The following day, we came for dinner where they had a Comic Con special for a $50 three course meal (appetizer, entree, dessert) with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed descriptions of existing menu items - very creative! For appetizers, we opted for the hummus with vegetables - so fresh; and stracciatella with pistachio pesto, beet puree, crispy shallots and toasted baguette - so creamy and flavorful. For entrees, we ordered the braised pork shank - tender and moist, and Faroe Islands salmon - perfectly cooked and crispy skin. For dessert, we chose the sundae and bread pudding which was a perfect way to end our meal. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted SO DELICIOUS. This was such a great value for 3 courses and even the regular menu prices are reasonable for the level of quality and taste that comes with it. The menu is so thoughtfully curated and you can tell by how passionate Jesse and the entire staff are about the restaurant & food. They were phenomenal and provided the best service of being polite and friendly, making our dining experience very enjoyable. Hidden gem in San Diego that recently opened but I foresee that it won't be hidden for long as our server Jeremy said. This was the most memorable meal of our trip and it might be a new yearly tradition for us to eat here when we come for Comic Con!

We received a gift card to the witherby and were excited to try it. Their customer service is 100/10. Felt like we were dining at a friends home rather than a restaurant. The history of the hotel/bar is a great plus and really enhances the cozy ambience. The food is wonderful, especially the crudo, pot pie, and chowder. I was surprised to see two vegan soup options on the menu. We ordered both and were blown away! Great cocktails and wine as well.

I knew it was a speakeasy but he did not. I was trying to double-check on my phone that Craft & Commerce was the right restaurant its housed in (yes) when he tried to jet set off down the block "to keep looking" rather than listen to me. I yelled, "MOTHER!" by accident and then he did truly leave me hahaha. He resurfaced a few minutes later, and then we walked in. It was 5:15 at the time, so 15 minutes after opening. I had NO IDEA how popular this spot was, nor anything about its nation-wide reputation. I actually didn't know that until two days ago when a Yelp-friend at home here in Richmond, Virginia, exclaimed excitedly when I told her we stopped in. The host who greeted us was kind, informed us there had been a line to get in that day, but that they had one barrel left; we jumped on it of course. It was happy hour, so the first cocktail I ordered was dirt cheap at $9. It was the Imperial Hawaiian with gin, rum, lemon, pineapple, and orgeat. I really shouldn't have ordered a second drink after that one, but I did have the classic Saturn later on in the night and it was absurdly good! Definitely my favorite of the two. The moody tiki vibe was so cool and fun. They even had frogs you could play on the tables. We had some fun neighbors too, which livened up the experience even more. We had a great time and both walked out heavily buzzed. We were asleep by 8 that night, but it was worth it!

We arrived about 10-15 minutes before opening, let the staff know we were walk-ins, and they were super accommodating--they gave us about 60 minutes at a table despite reservations coming in. The space itself is very small and tucked inside another venue, but that honestly adds to the charm. It's dimly lit with a unique, immersive vibe--think jungle-inspired with eclectic decor. At one point, there were rumbling sounds and subtle vibrations through the chairs, which made the whole experience feel interactive and different from your typical bar. The drinks were creative and fun (one of my friends even kept the drink garnish as a collectible), and the staff was friendly and welcoming throughout. It's definitely more about the ambiance and experience than anything else. I'd come back again--especially around the holidays to see how they switch up the decor. If you're looking for something a little different and don't mind a cozy, darker setting, it's worth checking out.

The waiter that came by mid-video to do the torch component of the butters we added on to our meats was great, I love that it's table side because it enhances the experience to the ambiance and you can squeeze a little video in. If you do go for your birthday, as I did, they provide you with a dessert outside of their choices, however, we did overindulge a bit. Overall, I had a phenomenal experience for my birthday dinner, the music/ambiance was great, service was great, and the food quality for both the meat choices we got, sides (caesar salad, broccoli, and macaroni) we're all SO yummy! The vibe is immaculate: dim-lighting, wooden furniture, nice wallpaper, and dark curtains. Cute but very overpriced vinyl shop in the back, it's more for show. It gets insanely busy here every night. There will always be a wait after 9 PM. Wait isn't long, but it's essential as it gets PACKED inside. Seating is always full and people will throw hands for a table. There is minimal room to stand. Unfortunately, there is NO DANCEFLOOR :,( The bar lines are INSANE and can be hard to follow. But the bartneders are patient and helpful when it's finally your turn. While I warn about the crowds, this place is awesome. 10/10 one of the best spots in San Diego, the staple of North Park.

But you have to be patient as they are often quite busy. The record store and records theme is what they present online but to be honest that is only a minute section of the establishment. It definitely doesn't describe the theme of the place neither. The worker in the record section simply ignored me when I tried to purchase a record and after a minute I had to ask for him to please ring me up. No apology from him. No biggie, I still had a decent time drinking here.

The entrance is pretty cool but I'll let you experience it :). The interior is definitely a vibe and intimate. Its definitely for smaller groups. They actually recommend to stay in your seat unless you need to use the restroom, which I appreciated. The service was all around very good! I got the Saigon Dreamer and it was so good! It had such a good mouth feels with the clarified milk. Highly recommend if its still on the menu. For food, I got the charred gai lan and the KFQ. The gai lan had a nice smoking taste and very tender. KFQuail was succulent and was fried to perfection. The only downside would be it was pretty expensive what you get. Will definitely be back for the cocktails but may get food somewhere.

The entrance experience is really creative (I won't spoil it!), and our host was incredibly enthusiastic, setting the tone for the whole night. You do need a reservation, and they charge a per‑person deposit. There's also a time limit, which is a bit of a bummer, but understandable given how popular the place is. The space itself is gorgeous -- dark, cool, and atmospheric with tons to look at. Anime is projected on the wall, and the décor is super detailed and immersive. Each table has a QR code so you can browse their extensive drink menu. They do serve food, but our group of six came just for drinks. The cocktails are unique, beautiful, and definitely on the pricier side, but there's something for everyone. You can only order one drink per person at a time, and there can be a bit of a wait, but honestly the presentation makes it worth it. I tried the Kasato Maru and the Seoul City Hipster -- both vibrant, refreshing, and stunning. A cool, quiet, moody speakeasy with memorable drinks and a fun reveal. A great spot for a special night out.
