Late night stop for a slice! This is what is needed sometimes, a good slice to balance out the mind and spirit! I stopped in on the way home, needed a good nightcap slice! Great food, but customers should know that if your order is over $75, a 15% gratuity is automatically added. What bothered me is that this is not a full-service dining experience where servers regularly check on you, refill drinks, clear plates, and provide ongoing table service. In our experience, the food was dropped off, and that was basically it. Drinks, water, and other basics were self-serve. I'm actually a generous tipper and usually tip 20% unless the service is poor. I have no problem rewarding good service. But gratuity should be the customer's choice, especially in a setup like this. Being required to pay it without having a say didn't sit well with me. Stumbled upon this place after the BSU game last weekend. We were across the street having a celebratory losing beverage and needing a light snack before heading back to the west valley. Reminded me of a college hangout, but the pizza was actually quite tasty. We ordered three of the large slices to split between us. The crust was perfect and thin which made the snack a perfect hit for us. You can also order off the menu for full size pizzas, hoagies, burgers, Calzones, and more. We came here after a night out at bars. We tried the pepperoni pizza and it ran out so we got a fresh slice and HOLY MOLY it was delicious! I also got their calzone which was amazing! So good I forgot to take a photo! The prices are also very affordable. We liked it so much we returned the next day but we didn't get a fresh slice and the taste definitely changed dramatically. I suggest you order a fresh pizza or wait for a fresh slice if you have the time to. The restaurant itself was very big there's a seating areas outside as well as inside. They share a restroom with the rest of the places there but we had no issue using it. There's a lot of debate on what a good pizza should be, so I'll start with my own opinion. I spent much of my life in New York and New Jersey. I was lucky to live around the corner from DeLucias in Raritan for years, where my wife and her family grew up and knew the owners and bought all their pizzas back when you could still just walk in and expect to be served. So for me the ultimate slice is like that, one you might get while walking around in the city or on the boardwalk down the shore, cut from a gigantic pie, folded in half, and handed to you on waxed paper. Those pies are light and almost delicate, have a thin, delicious crust, a perfect balance between soft and a little chewy in the body but crispy at the edge, and of course fantastic sauce that stands on its own, and just the right amount of very good cheese. And yes, my friends from Chicago will tell me that's not pizza at all, so I'll acknowledge that upfront, again this review is just my own opinion and bias. But based on that personal ideal, Wiseguy has one of the best pies I've had outside of the NY tri state area. The crust is very close to perfect, maybe a hair too crispy for me, but delicious. You'd eat it plain and love it, which is important. You should want to eat the crusts, they should be yummy, like these are. And the topping level is just right - this isn't a flabby, weighted down mess with of too much of everything. It's a proper pizza. My only negative feedback I'd give them is that a margherita pizza comes with a pomodoro sauce, like appears in the photo on their website, and is not a white pie like it's actually delivered. Other than that, I'll not ever buy a pizza from anywhere else in Boise, these guys get it. read more

Ok, listen up you wise guys (and gals).. get it, Wiseguy? A pizza joint is hard to write a review about because, pizza is pizza and any normal person usually likes pizza. (If you don't like it, that is ok, you are still normal.) What makes a pizza place standout to get 5 stars? Not sure but I left happy with my experience. The thing I liked about Wiseguys was the unique flavors of pizza. There was a kettle chip pizza, a lemony zesty pizza, (I liked it but the person I was with didn't so your satisfaction will probably vary from slice to slice), and then your traditional meat, veggy, and jalapeño zas. The decor is fun and original! Pick up a slice for the go or order up for the stay but either way I think you will be fairly satisfied. We ordered a Wise Guy - pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, red onion, and black olive, and added fresh tomato. It was pretty tasty, but would've been better if we had been able to eat it piping hot at the restaurant with a tap beer, instead of 10 minutes later in the hotel lobby. Can I get a slice of pepperoni and 2 health code violations for dine in? Over an hour after I ate I was able to say good bye to some of the pizza's that greeted me when I came in. (they should have been thrown out after an hour per code ...Gross) This is a hard order to fill in a lot of other places but here at Wise Guy's they gladly deliver. In my quest to find the best NY pizza my travels took me to Guido's and next here, in my previous post NY Giant came out on top but how did Wise Guy's do? Let's just say the atmosphere is way better than NY giant and Guido's combined, (sports bar meets brick bistro) First off BEST Coca Cola In the valley (carbon, water, syrup ratio is on point. Not that it matters) - Price Again same problem as Guido's the price is like we are in Manhattan not In Boise. Size- Again it fits on the plate (paper plate) 1/2 the size of authentic NY pizza. Flavor- I needed help so I consulted the 2 wise guys on painted on the wall, When I asked them how is my pizza bottom burnt yet the top looks barely cooked they were just as lost for wisdom as I was. (Oh well) To make matters worse the pizza was bland and the cheese was a hard congealed mess, it was not stretchy as melted cheese should be. The sauce has some potential as I tasted it apart from everything else... so yay something good. Overall- My experience sitting in the big back room was that this place is run by a bunch of college guys, I watched one drink from his open container in the sight of all the customers. (against health code) I spent over an hour dining here on purpose and making various phone calls. Now many reviews state the pizza tasted old and flavorless, I was curious if I would witness old pizza being sold and I did. Another cooking 101 pizza is 80 percent cooked, it then cooks the other 20% when you order. 80% cooked pizza sitting for more than an hour is breeding ground for bacteria and also strips cheese of the moisture giving it a non gooey texture. NY Giant Still reigns as the best NY pizza in Boise Guido's tops wise guy by a landslide, but hey a digiorno beats this pizza. Great pizza and wings. Relaxed comfortable environment. Beer selection is perfect, not to many choices, six drafts with local selections and miscellaneous bottled craft beer like Stone and Rogue. I agree with the comments that the sauce could use a little kick, I felt like salting mine (but didn't!). The crust is thin and crunchy, but still has some softness to it. We had the wings with the garlic knots and while each was really good alone, together it was something special. The wing sauce had a kick to it and dragging the knots through the wing sauce was killer. Reminded me of the old Semenzas in Reno. Thin, not a lot of flavor, and not cooked properly to get it to be either chewy or crispy. The toppings didn't feel fresh or well balanced. Perhaps that it is the fact that I went here on my first date with my fiance, but I fell in love with Wiseguys 4 and a half years ago. They are about as pricey as IPC or Flying Pie, bit with better pizza and a convenient downtown location. The namesake Wiseguy pizza is my favorite but they have a good selection. Their garlic knots are tasty af too. For the drinkers, there are a long list of craft beers from local breweries. If you're unsure about what to get, the staff is super friendly and helpful. Oof. To echo some other reviews here, I wanted to like Wiseguys from the start. As a human being, I am naturally predisposed to wanting to like and enjoy any pizza that comes my way. Immediate pros upon walking in the door: - You can swap out your lunch special soda for a PBR, no upcharge. Yeah, I'll bite. - Reasonably spacious joint. It's deceptively small when coming in from the street before you see the second space towards the back. Decent atmosphere. - Friendly staff, by all accounts. - The price is right - special slices go for 3$ and change, regular slices for around 2. They cover most of the area of a paper plate, as NY style slices should. Special slices have some fun topping combos, which can be fun to experiment with. I grabbed the slice and salad special with a PBR, boyfriend gets two slices and a soda, plus some garlic knots to share. All the food comes out within 10 minutes or so, with the salad and knots coming first. I pick at my caesar and it's overdressed to hell and back, but no big deal. Knots are also lackluster - not really garlicky, not especially oily/buttery, just kinda plain and doughy. That's too bad but not a dealbreaker, either. I hate to say it, but the pizza is just not very good. It was fresh, which is something, but not enough to save this pie. Trying to fold the slice results in the pizza folding under the weight of its own toppings. I suspect the culprit is a serious oversaucing - the sauce is fine, but it's just a little too heavy and wet to work on this style of pie. The dough has no real redeeming qualities. As other reviewers have noted, the cheese is just plain terrible. Consistency seemed to be an issue, since boyfriend ordered the same slice as me but didn't have the same issue with the sauce. He has confessed to having fairly forgiving standards on pizza because it's pizza, but he still didn't like his slice. I ended up not really finishing mine, because it progressively bummed me out as I worked further into it. I like the idea of this place, the execution just desperately needs reworking. It could do in a pinch as a late night option, but other than that I don't think I'd return. read more

PBR *Convenient downtown location As for the bad: *The pizza is not good. I hit Wiseguy every so often because it's close to my home and work, and I dig the PBR/soda swap-out option. I definitely don't seek it out, though, because the pizza is always just mediocre. However, the pizza I was served on my last visit was god awful. I've honestly had better frozen pizza - way better, in fact. *The service can be hit and miss. Sometimes you get good help, and sometimes the crew is just not quite there. There are lots of good pizza options in Boise and downtown. Wiseguy, sadly, isn't one of them. read more

Oh boy, where to begin with this one? How about: I just threw up Wiseguy in the toilet. It's not really Wiseguy's fault. Well kind of. Who knows?! I guess you'll just have to read on to find out. This week, Tom and I are joined by our friend Austin: mac n' cheese connoisseur and pizza aficionado. Don't really know much about Wiseguy and couldn't find anything online. It's a NY style pizzeria. They have two sections; the front does pizza by the slice and the back is more of a sit down pizzeria with bar and sports. I really appreciate that you can have both experiences. Nice atmosphere. Very hipstery, parts of it look like a pirate ship and other parts look like a wine cellar or some kind of medieval hallway. Tom and I each ordered a drink, a pepperoni slice, and a specialty slice. I got Hawaiian, he got veggie. Austin ordered a single slice of their signature Wise Guy which is essentially a meat-lover's. Two big slices and a drink came out to $7-something which is a very reasonable price. As we waited for our slices to heat up, we watched Metallica proceeded to play the national anthem at a hockey game. Metallica on Ice: 1 shred out of 5 At some point we noticed our slices had not yet arrived which was a little strange. I jokingly said "he probably forgot about our slices and the whole pizzeria will catch on fire." As I say this, Tom sees the guy who put our slices in the oven walk nonchalantly into the room. Then he spots us, a look of alarm overtakes his face, and he runs back in the other direction. A few minutes later the guy walks back in and says, "Hey so your slices... they're a little crispy. I'm going to make another set but I forgot what you guys had." We say it's no problem and tell him we had 2 peps, 1 veggie, 1 hawaiian, and a Wise Guy. A few minutes later he is back again with 2 veggies, 1 hawaiian, and a Wise Guy. We tell him that's not what we ordered and he's just devastated. The guy is so nice that we can't really be mad at him. We finally get the correct order and dig in. -Pepperoni- Austin says the dough tastes like marshmallows. Tom and I look at him confused. Don't believe Austin, the dough tastes like regular pizza dough. The pepperoni and meat-lovers in particular are very crunchy. I like crunchy but I know most folks would say this is too crunchy. You couldn't fold it without it cracking and falling apart. Sauce is good. It's very Italian but there's very little of it. That cheese though. The cheese is just awful. It didn't seem to bother the others as much but to me it was just goop. It's like when you have leftover pizza and heat it in the microwave for not enough time so it's kind of melted but not enough and it's really oily. The peps are 'flat on it' style, not crunchy style. I'm more of crunchy kind of guy but peps will be peps. -Veggie- This is my favorite of the bunch and probably Austin's favorite as well. Tom doesn't like it much. The flavors are everything you expect from a veggie, strong taste of mushrooms, peppers, olives, and onions. That cheese though. AUGH. -Hawaiian- Some jalapenos for an extra kick, but really the jalapenos don't have any kick. Pineapple doesn't really have taste either. Canadian is very nicely cooked and tastes great. I would have preferred just the Canadian bacon. -Wise Guy- This had some good meaty flavors. Mushroom and sausage go well together. Good steady flavor but no thrills. After the first bite, you kind of know what you're eating and you're just eating more of it. And that cheese. Oh that cheese. Cheese Louise amirite? -Verdict- So when we left Tom and Austin were adamant that this place was really bad. I was more on the mediocre portion of the spectrum. Their argument was that it's downtown, there are at least a couple places that are better and just a few blocks away. My argument was that it was cheap and it wasn't that bad. I was ready to give this place 3 slices. Then the vomit. It was hot, I had a headache, and pizza is not the best food to eat in these conditions. That being said, the pizza really didn't help. It was greasy and oily. I might have been more motivated to keep it in, had the pizza tasted better. I guess that doesn't make sense because if it tasted really good, then throwing up would kind of let me taste it a second time? So maybe if it tastes really good, then throwing up is actually a compliment? Nah, it was bad. This actually brings up an important point about food that we didn't consider in the other reviews.
