If you were expecting to get chicken wings from a place called "Wings over Somerville" you're in for a surprise. Most restaurants use the term "wings" with poetic license and an order includes a mix of cheap chicken drums with actual chicken wings, usually diluting the wings in 50-50 proportion, more or less. We've all come to accept this, rip off that it is. Wings over Somerville takes that gambit to whole new level: 100% cheap chicken drums, no delicious chicken wings at all. The thick layer of salt didn't help. Change the name to "Salty as Fuck Drums over Somerville" and I'd be cool with it. When we complained about it we were told we were being too literal, that drums are wings. Sign of the Times. Horrible, horrible, horrible service. We placed an order on Super Bowl Sunday at 1 o'clock as it was snowing and we wanted them to have plenty of time. They took the order and took the money. They were going to use a delivery service (which we were paying a ridiculous amount of money ($50) for) but wanted to make sure we had it for the game as we do this every year. At 6 o'clock Wings Over Somerville canceled everything. They said they would not make the order - even though Door Dash would deliver it! They said they were too backed up with orders and rather than take our large order that was made early, they were not going to make any more tonight. Now they're not picking up their phone (they must be behind and telling others that they cannot get their orders that they took earlier, too). Why they have a hamburgers, ribs and salad (SALAD?) on their menu is beyond me. Fries are a natural compliment - they sit next to those big, meaty hunks in the fryer, talking about the Sox and getting some color, and they bring a little starch to an otherwise fat, seasoning and protein oasis. My go-to is the Hang Glider: 1/2lb of boneless chicken tenders, sauced or seasoned as you wish Buttercup, and boxed up with fries and a Coke for $7.89. Considering the tenders alone cost $6.99 (the DC-3), the combo is straight righteous. Go Cajun Blackened or Garlic Parmesan if don't want to wear juice, or man up and drink the Afterburner sawce. It's waaaaarm. Living close to this locale means skipping the $2 delivery charge by jogging to pick up my meat, plus I get the added bonus of proactively burning 30 of the 2,000 calories I'm about to ingest. The ONLY negative thing I have to say is ever since switching from their own delivery drivers to using shady companies like Doordash, I've been forced to drive and pickup the food myself. We just wasted an hour tonight waiting for some idiot from doordash to deliver our food. Supposedly the food arrived earlier than expected and my phone goes into do not disturb mode after 10 pm automatically, so naturally, I never got the phone calls. Whatever happened to "ring the f****** doorbell"???? Doordash is also supposed to at least leave the food on the front porch if they can't deliver it and it was nowhere to be found. I'm hungry, we get hangry, and after screaming at the call center guy somewhere in fucking India about the order, we got our refund. Now, after wasting an hour and hungrier than ever, I just called them directly, they very quickly took down my order, said it would be ready in 30-40 minutes, and costs $5 less than ordering through Doordash. Long story short, I still love this place, I just hate Doordash. If they bring back their old delivery system, they'll get 5 stars instead of just 4. Again, DO NOT USE DOORDASH!!! The deliver driver will never ring your doorbell, they won't leave your food if they "can't" deliver it, and you'll have to waste more time on hold with them to get a refund. Wings Over Somerville uses quality white meat in their boneless wings, and they're cooked perfectly before being tossed in the sauce of your choice. One of the nice things about Wings is that if you order a pound of the boneless, you can get two different flavors. Even if you have a favorite, subscribe to this policy and try to sample every variety. The sides are solid but not spectacular, though the waffle cut fries are worth trying. Honestly, this is one of my favorite places to order from. We always get both wings and fries. Usually I only go for bone-in wings, but the tenders here are so good that I will sometimes order them instead. My go-to flavor is the garlic parm, would definitely recommend it. Not a huge fan of the sweeter sauces. I think the reason so many people have given a low rating is that the quality is not always consistent. Most of the time everything tastes great and the wings are crispy, but occasionally they will be soggy or under seasoned/under sauced. They also keep changing which app the delivery goes through which has been frustrating. This is only reason I am giving four stars and not five. My boyfriend and I love wings over very much and will continue to order from them!
