I got the mixed chicken plate with Mac n cheese and candied yams. The chicken was very good--fried very well with great seasoning, a crispy exterior, and juicy interior. The Mac was very gooey and cheesy. And the yams were excellent as well. I thought the texture of the yams was near perfect--not too hard but not too soft and mushy either. Also not overly sweet. I also felt like the price was very fair. A lot of times, similar entrees can cost near $30, but this was just over $20 which was super reasonable especially for the quality. The plate also came with a side of cornbread. The fish was fried without being greasy and the sides were delicious. I finished every last bit. My partner got jerk wings with mac and cheese and candied yams. I tried a bit of the wings and the mac and cheese and I think my favorite sides are still the ones I picked (the collard greens and the green beans). The jerk wings were spicy with a side of tanginess. Absolutely delicious as well. Beware though that this is a very small front (about 8 seats total) in Cambridge meaning parking is scarce. The restaurant is a small storefront just with two tables, so it's best to order out! You can order ahead, but I wanted to see what it was like in-person so I ordered there. They told me it would take about 15-20 mins, so I came back in 15 and it was ready! I got the ribs and chicken combo plate--highly recommend. The ribs portion was big and so tender. The chicken was so crispy and flavorful, but not over-the-top oily at all. I LOVED the Mac and cheese and the candied yams as sides. This is the best fried chicken in the Boston and Cambridge area. Coast Cafe is a small, local shop owned by a married couple. This restaurant has been in their family for years and it's truly a community spot. They offer southern comfort foods like fried chicken, different sides, stuffed patties, and also jerk chicken!! For food, we got their 2 piece combo (both thighs ofc) with mac and cheese and collared greens, jerk chicken wings, and beef patties. The fried chicken was soooo fresh, juicy, and seasoned well. I burned my mouth because I got so excited! The sides were also great but not as fresh so they could've been better. The jerk chicken wings were bursting with flavor and had perfect consistency for the sauce: not too wet or dry! Beef patties were fire. We ordered through Uber Eats so the combination plates ranged from $16-24. The portions are pretty big and each plate comes with two sides and cornbread, so this could be shared between two people. I got a fried mixed chicken combination plate (comes with a thigh piece and a breast piece) with mac and cheese and rice and beans with gravy. We also picked up their buffalo sauce, jerk sauce, and hot sauce ($1.75 each on UE). The flavor of everything I got was on point. The seasoning on the fried chicken was delicious, and it was on the saltier side so it didn't really need any sauce. The mac and cheese was extremely creamy, the rice and beans were savory and not mushy, and the cornbread was fluffy, buttery, and sweet. The sauces were great, too. The jerk sauce was my favorite and packed a sweet, smoky, spicy kick. I expected the chicken to be the star of the show but sadly it was super dry. Hands down the best Mac and Cheese in Camberville! Even Blue Ribbon BBQ in Arlington comes in second for me, as they use Velveeta, and I'm not a fan of that. And of course the centerpiece of many meals here, the fried chicken, is also the best. Other cult faves in New Southern fare like Highland Kitchen, while they have good fried chicken... they don't have *amazing* fried chicken probably due to a crowded menu. Coast Cafe keeps the main thing the main thing, and it shows! If you watch their IG videos, you can see them hand-breading and frying their chicken and fish, carefully placing the delicate pieces in the frying basket, never throwing in a huge batch and hoping for the best. The time and care taken in cooking come through in the perfectly crispy texture of the skin and succulent, tender meat. All the sides they offer are outstanding, so Coast Cafe really shines when it's time for a special family dinner-- that way, you can have a little bit of everything. The candied yams are slightly sweet for my taste, but no matter, I just eat them for dessert. Truly I've never had a bad meal here. While there are only a couple of tables in the small, cozy shop, this food is really designed to be eaten at home with loved ones. Coast Cafe has slightly less traditional operating hours. But that's understandable when you know how all-consuming it is to own and operate a restaurant. Plan ahead to ensure they'll be open when you arrive, and you'll be glad you did! Parking was hard. We almost started considering a Plan C, when a metered parking space opened up. 12 minutes a quarter, if you please. We stuffed it so I wouldn't have to worry about how long our lunch was taking. The Coast Cafe is located in a residential area, and is teeny tiny with just two tables for two, and three stools along counter seating. Your order is taken at the window that looks through into their kitchen. Credit cards are accepted, and upon ordering and paying, we were given the head's up that it would take 20 minutes. We arrived for lunch a bit on the late side and both tables were already occupied as were two of the stools. Fortunately one of the tables were freed up shortly before our meal was ready. Chicken and Waffles $15.99 had to be one of our dishes. Two pieces of hot fried chicken dusted with powdered sugar topped a round tender waffle, with a generous side of syrup. My piece was dark meat with a bone. My DC's was presumably white. Both were moist meat within, and topped with a super crispy - yeah, I'm going to eat it - fried piece of chicken skin that the fat seemed plum fried out of. For our other dish, we got a combo - the Pork Rib and Chicken $18.49, which was two ribs and one piece of chicken. All combos come with 2 sides and cornbread. For ours, we went with mac & cheese and collard greens. If we had gone with their ribs only combo, it would have been 3 ribs and $17.99. My DC thought we did the better pick, since, even though their pork ribs were tender, saucy and good, the chicken was the best part of our meal. Their cornbread was baked in a cupcake tin, the sweet sort, but served surprisingly cold. I couldn't leave without sampling their sweet potato pie $3.75. It called me from the glass case where it sat as a generous portion (perhaps a 6th of a pie) beside the cake slices dressed with either white and chocolate frostings. It was a nice piece of pie, with a still crispy crust, and a smooth, not overly sweet filling. We're coming back... perhaps when it is warmer and we can take our order elsewhere to eat. What to order: chicken combination plate (your choice of two thighs or breasts), cornbread, and two sides Forewarning: the food is SO RIDICULOUSLY GOOD that you will gobble everything up. Downside? You may or may not feel like crap from the food coma afterwards. Is it worth every penny still?! 500% yes The chicken was seasoned so well, and was fried to a crisp! The meat of the chicken was still very juicy and wasn't dry at all. The cornbread was so moist... so moist I don't want to even know how much butter was used LOL again, worth it entirely because the taste is that good. Enjoyed our second visit to Coast Cafe tonight for some really yummy food! Ordering for pickup was pretty seamless (online with UberEats). It was actually ready like 10 minutes before the time we selected, but fortunately we were early anyway, so it worked out! Pickup was super easy and quick (not bad for 6:45pm on a Friday) and the folks behind the counter were super nice. I had the fried catfish, mac and cheese, and greens. Really loves the catfish - perfectly cooked, and very flavorful. And the Mac and Cheese was stellar too with the creamy texture and crunchy breadcrumbs on top. The greens were decent but needed some more seasoning for my taste. Their texture was good though. Hubby had the ribs which were very tough unfortunately. I don't know if they accidentally overcooked ours sadly. The candied yams were delicious though! I love a sweet yam, but, lol, almost should have saved them for dessert, hehe. Man oh man! The Coast Cafe has been on my to-eat list forEVER and I'm so glad I finally got takeout from them! First off -- the FOOD. Chicken thigh plate was delectable. Two big pieces of chicken thigh, fried to perfection, with the breading crispy and adhering to the meat instead of falling off the protein as soon as you tear into it. Similar story with the fried catfish: perfectly breaded, with a light, clean taste (it was almost a fattier, more delicious haddock, with none of that "fishy" taste.) Mac & cheese side was creamy and rich and the noodles were perfectly cooked, and the collards side was nice and smoky with bits of (I think) pulled pork. And the free cornbread? Holy smokes. I inhaled that so quick I couldn't even take a picture. It's Southern-style, so more like moist cake and sweeter, and it just made for the perfect end to our meal. Service was friendly and fast; order came out on time, hot, and accurate. Great social distancing signage outside the storefront, enforced as far as I could see around the building and inside as well. Store looked clean and neat as well, for the brief period of time I was in it. Plus, they're a black-owned business, which really should be reason enough to visit! read more
