This is definitely not a Chinese hot pot restaurant. The head cook and bottle washer (I'm not…read morekidding!) didn't even know what a hot pot was, even though they've owned the place for years. I'm surprised that they didn't change the name. She told me that someone else had stopped recently thinking that it was a Chinese place. Seeing the pumpkin pie under Desserts on the sign as I entered was a clue. I thought "oh, what the heck!", and she said that she'd bring a menu to me in just a moment. There was only one person seated in the restaurant but it was possibly too early for many people. After a short delay, she arrived with the menu and asked what I wanted to drink. I ordered a sweet tea. Perusing the menu, I thought I'd try the meatloaf sandwich. That sounded like something typically Indiana. She was out of meatloaf. (As I learnt later, the walk-in cooler had been repaired but she had thrown out possibly spoiled food and was waiting for the cooler to become cooler.) I ordered the fish tail sandwich. Rather than just have a little rectangle mostly hidden by the bun, this was long enough to be seen quite well on each end. I bit off one end before taking the photo, so sorry about that. I also ordered seasoned fries. It took a little while, and a couple entered, so the woman in charge of it all had to multi-task. I wonder what happens if she's really busy. The food was good, although the seasoned fries could have used more seasoning. They seemed to have a layer of breading with mild paprika, when they should have had a mix of mild and spicy paprika. The food was prepared as well as you could expect, and it was obvious that she cared. She and her husband took time to talk, which was quite pleasant. They weren't intrusive but they seemed genuinely interested. She was definitely interested in what a hot pot was. Being between Quizno's and Mancino's, someone might miss the place, especially with the McDonald's drive-thru line into 30th Street. Shouldn't it wind in front of Kroger's instead? Geez. Of course, people could just avoid McDonald's and go to The Hot Pot Restaurant. Update 2013.09.24: I was in Connersville photographing cross country and stopped ahead of time. Tried the meat loaf sandwich and a taco. I wish the meat loaf had as much meat as it had loaf. It seemed a bit spongy. The taco was okay but it really didn't compel me, either.

If you hear banjos, RUN. However! It's worth the drive and the possible buckshot injuries to get yourself to the Laurel Hotel for their Friday and Saturday buffet. You can choose from either the Country Buffet ($13.95) or the Seafood Buffet ($17.95). There's really not a huge difference between the two, as long as you're not a rabid crab/frog leg fan (which we are not). There's still a variety of seafood (mostly of the fried variation) on the Country Buffet. The chicken and dumplings are worth the price alone. Filling, flavorful and homemade... can't beat that. There's green beans, mashed potatoes, pan-fried chicken... just like you remember Grandma making them. In fact, this whole place kind of smells like Grandma's. Comfort food, old stuff and just a hint of mothballs. It's very clean, though, and the waitress we had, Terry, was very helpful in explaining buffet protocol. We left very satisfied... drove right home and went to sleep on account of the food coma. We'll go again, I'm sure. Apparently you can also take the scenic Whitewater Valley Railroad from Connersville to Laurel in order to eat there. Yelper Rick G. was a big fan of the tenderloin. As a tenderloin blogger, I trust his opinions there. The basics? Accessibility is surprisingly solid - Metamora can be really hit-and-miss (it's an older, folksy town with the main claim to fame being the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site and an emphasis on old-timey music and antique shops. The front entrance is workable - there's a slight lip at the door. The dining room itself is pretty well laid out and I had no problems. I didn't try the restroom. There's sandwiches here, traditional diner fare, fish/shrimp, appetizers, several dessert options, and more. The fried chicken had it going on. The mashed potatoes were inspired. The people were friendly. Is this the best meal I've ever had? Nah, but it's delicious and definitely a shining jewel in this small town and one of the best options for those who need wheelchair accessibility. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area.

There were menu photos online of salads and panini and mac and cheese bowls, but none of those were available. I did a build your own bowl with salad greens as the base and I had to eat around out clumps of black wilted salad leaves (I'm pretty sure it was a bagged spring mix that was starting to go bad). I wish we had gone to Smoothie King next door.

I personally care most about the food so the atmosphere doesn't bother me as much. But I think it hurts their image when they'r charging "premium lunch" prices and the interior can't even match the vibe of like a chipotle or sweetgrass, which they are most comparable to. Massively high ceilings, two stories including an elevated train platform. Parts of old train cars make up part of it and the main barroom floor comes from a basketball court! The outside is covered with cool mural paintings. On our first visit it was a little tricky to find the door. All those big TV screens and tons of sport related decor, as you'd expect for a sports bar, but the lighting is rather low, which I liked. The menu is more typical family restaurant, much more than bar food. The salads were simple and fresh and the lettuce was crispy iceberg. I had spaghetti and meatballs, requested and received a shaker of parmesan. The dish needed a little salt but was tasty and satisfying. My husband had a sirloin which he thought was cooked a little beyond the requested medium rare, but it was tender and tasty so he was a happy camper. Service was friendly, sweet and prompt. They have NFL Sunday Ticket and TouchTunes jukebox. I saw a full size shuffleboard and would like to come back to play that. There's a pool table in the other dining room. One tall beer, one shot, one soda, two entrees, 40 bucks. Recommended for an inexpensive satisfying meal, plus the historical setting.
