Not starting off very well. Service is beyond slow and the waiter screwed up the drink order. Yes, I seen him write it down. We received silverware, with a knife or a fork missing. One person did not receive any. I ordered the chef salad with thousand island dressing. Salad was of a good portion but the dressing had very little taste. My wife got the Greek salad and hers tasted fine. My beer (tall draft) Michelob Lite and it arrived flat. I'm going to add that we were here with another couple who said they have been here a dozen times before and the service was never like this. My daughter had the chicken wings. They were very greasy. I had a burger, which was good. My son-in-law had the Stromboli, which was saturated in Greece and had a strange flavor to it. We tried this place based on the reviews, but I honestly say I could not recommend. The waitress was pleasant but that's the best thing I could say about the place. read more

Charming! It really looks and feels like an English pub. And the place is huge, multiple dining rooms in addition to the bar (taproom to a Brit), bricked archways, a pool room. I even saw a snuggery for goodness' sake. And I am SO sitting there when we return soon for a meal. It was just a couple beers this first visit. It's just brick and old wood everywhere you look. Tiffany lamps. It's gorgeous and dark. The beer garden is a big comfy outdoor area, walled off from the street, with tons of tables, all with big umbrellas, plus a comfy couch under its own shelter. I saw four giant heaters ready for the wintertime. The taproom and beer garden are strictly 21+. There's a pulltab dispenser machine for your gambling pleasure. The menu looks interesting, unfortunately nothing on offer that's really English other than fish and chips which is a shame. The atmosphere just cries out for black pudding or a shepherds pie. So I'm really rating 4 1/2 on that account but definitely rounding up, as it is such a cozy feelgood place. read more

Went to check out this spot not too long ago. Food was very nice and filling. Prices were right on point and wouldn't break your budget for good food. Service was kind of slow since there was only one server for a bunch on tables. Atmosphere was pretty great, but it does get loud with it being a pub. Would recommend for the great food and decor, but don't expect quick service. Overall it was a good experience. read more

Smiley's has had new owners since April 2012. They've made some changes and the place isn't so dark and dreary anymore. It is still pretty smokey inside though. I came here with a group of colleagues on a Thursday evening. The patio is great and relatively smoke-free during dinner hours. Smiley's is known for their pizzas and drink/food specials. They were really busy and the wait staff was ok, but obviously overwhelmed. It's a decent place to go after work for a drink in the evenings to sit outside in the summer. They offer local beer (New Boswell) on tap. I'm not sure I would come here on a weekend night just based on things I've heard around town. I hope they turn the bar around and will sponsor a few more smoke-free evenings. read more

As a place that I used to go pretty frequently I am somewhat aware of how they do things over at smileys. I will break this down in Pros and Cons. Pros: Smileys has a great decor, its basically what the name suggests. It is a pub and what a pub is to me is something like smileys but from England. I love that they capture that element and the old phone booth at the entrance just adds to the experience. They have two solid pool tables that are reasonably priced and a small place to play darts. The size of the building is absolutely phenomenal. Most of the time they have half of it shut off, and for good reason. They have pretty good specials and they even have their own beer on tap! I think that is pretty cool! They have more than just one bathroom and tons of seating. They even have a beer garden! Cons: I hate cigarettes. I am allergic and the smell they produce makes my sinuses stuff up so much. This bar allows smoking. They have special fans to suck away the smoke but it does not help one bit. You will come out caked in that scent. Thursdays are dollar beer night which is cool but it is usually really really overcrowded and there is no place to sit and they won't open that extra areas to let people sit! With all the decor and how the walls are set up you can't really tell that there is extra space at all. Its basically 4 small buildings with a couple of doorways in between each one. The bathrooms are terrible and not cleaned nearly enough. They have food but honestly, it is terrible. The one thing that pisses me off the most is violation of Alcohol licences. These guys will serve you till you don't want to be served anymore. This is such a dangerous environment that they don't even care about. If you want, you can get absolutely shitfaced and no one will say a thing! The other thing is that most of the time they will not check IDs at the door and they don't check them at the bar either! This is incredibly illegal and the idea that it still happens infuriates me! How can you be so irresponsible that you refuse to check IDs and allow underage patrons to get wasted at your bar?? Normally I would give this place a four star review but with the License Violations I have observed in that place I cannot give any more than two stars. NOTE TO THE SMILEYS OWNERS: Change your ways and prove it to me and I will edit my review. I promise. read more

With my latest travels last week, I found myself in Richmond yet again. (not surprisingly) However, this was probably about the only remaining place I had on my list of Richmond places I'd kept wanting to go to, and since I'd heard many good things about this place from my brother who recently graduated from Earlham. Was definitely worth going to, IMHO. Atmosphere-wise, between Chuck's Sports Bar and Smiley's Pub(the 2 bars I usually hit up, if I'm in these parts), this is my fav of the 2. Better than expected selection of beer(both imports and domestic), very spacious bar overall that has several different rooms, free popcorn every night, real decor inside that makes you think you traveled to Britain, even down to a working pay phone in a British-style red booth. They also have a decent food menu, too. Much of the other bases are covered well, too(i.e. TVs, a dart room, cheap drink specials, etc.). Found it interesting that local pool tournaments and leagues are often held in the pool room they have here. A food menu is also served here before 9pm, so no wonder I got confused when I glanced at their regular brochure after I got there mid-evening(plus didn't suspect this place served food beyond popcorn), and saw a full-fledged food menu. Also had my favorite Long Island Ice Tea I've ever had anywhere here, so of course that helps cement this place into 5 star territory. Will also note that I didn't find this place that smoky, though I came here on a weekday night, and imagine that it probably could be the opposite case on weekends. (and for anyone that may be sensitive to smoke, I'd recommend instead going to Chuck's) And anyway, with the diminishing number of states and cities/towns that allow businesses to permit smoking, it's nice for once to be able to socially smoke in a bar. Don't think I need to say much more about this place, except that it's a must-stop if you're trying to find a Richmond bar with both a nice atmosphere, and cheap drinks. My friend recently brought me here on a Friday night. That is the night they do karaoke. Drink prices are reasonable, so is the food. Croud is friendly and quiet. The crowd is also quite diverse in age, ethnicity, and lifestyle. Only a couple people danced. Security seemed good. They check every one at the door for weapons. It was slightly smokey. I'm used to the bars with no smoking policies. I liked the karaoke. The rotation was fast and I was able to sing a few songs. People were supportive of every singer, despite skill level.
