Because of its proximity to the airport, it tends to attract quite a few overnight B&B guests who are just about to go off on holiday, so it's not just a 'local' pub. They serve typical pub grub such as gammon, chilli, scampi, battered cod, sausages & mash, or lasagne - plus a carvery on a Sunday. There are veggie options, but they're pretty limited, and there's a small children's menu. If you're visiting during the summer, you may find they're holding a barbecue outside in the pleasant beer garden - while in the winter there's a roaring open fire to keep customers cosy. This is a sweet pub in a lovely village, and there are fantastic views of Bristol from this area so it's well worth a trip.

I can imagine that if you want a quick hit of all that is great about England before you jet of somewhere, of if while away on another sunny shore you have dreamt of that first roast dinner upon your return to England then this is certainly one of the best places to come. A beautiful building with wonderful customer service and fantastic freshley cooked local food. Places like this don't need to advertise as word of mouth pretty much does it all for them, and all I hear is good things, which is why I paid them a visit, and they certainly did not dissapoint.

Knowing it's punters are usually people waiting for a plane, the restaurant is open all day so those awkward departure or delayed arrivals are not a problem, as you can arrange your meal around your itinerary. The pub does have it's fair share of regualrs from the village though, and as a result has a decent selection of ales, lagers and beers on tap. A lot of us picked from the specials board and the food came out devine and the service was outstanding. The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

I often find that you cannot judge a pub by its exterior. We were pleasantly surprised this afternoon. I don't know who put the spaniel by the door, but it was the perfect welcome! :) Welcome at the bar, not crowded but very cosy with a lovely open fire. We were guided to a lovely table by the fire which was perfect. We had a lovely lunch too. My wild boar sausages with leek and herbs were fantastic, all meat and no filler I could detect. The mash was yummy and the gravy. The veggies were water logged but I don't hold that against them. (my meal was less than £9.) My companion ate ham, egg and chips and it looked good. The puds that arrived at the table next door looked pretty good and were appreciated. Hobgoblin on tap, Butcombe bitter amongst others.
