The Cross Hands in Winterbourne Down is a bit of a special pub to me. I've been propping up the bar for the last 14 years and more. Even though I don't visit as much as I'd like to these days and it's no longer in walking distance, I still consider it to be the local. The Crosser is ran by 2 legends Pete & Les who run a no nonsense cosy country boozer. There is a great selection of West Country ciders and guest ales on tap and if you're after a lite bite the ham/cheese & onion crusty roles are amazing! In the summer you can rock up with your own burgers and steaks and use the DIY bbq's in the vast back garden which is great. A load of friends and I did it for my birthday a couple of years ago and I can highly recommend it for an easy to organise celebratory event. There are 2 annual events which are staple must do's for the surrounding residents and those in the know - the Boxing Day Mummers folk dancing and the May Day carnival, complete with barrels of cider out the front and a hog roast. Both are full of local West Country merriment and for me there's always plenty of blasts from the past and loads of mates. Friday night drinks after work are my personal fav at the crosser which I've not done for ages. The pub is a lot of fun and gets quite lively! I'll DEFO be getting there soon. What a legendary pub!

Log fire!

The cross hands is what I would call an old man's pub but actually it has clientele of all ages. It has such a lovely, cosy, local feel to it and the landlord and lady are amazing! For the winter there's a log fire and for the summer there's a huge back garden with plenty of benches and even a kids climbing frame. They host events such as cider festivals, you can hire it for parties and in the summer there's a marquee in the garden, they have live music sometimes and even a DJ. But my favourite is in the winter, all the gorgeous Christmas decs up, sat on a red Chesterfield having a nice quiet vino! Lush! This is definitely the only pub you need to visit in Winterbourne, in my eyes!

The garden offers a lot, great in the sun for a quick pint, relax and even let the children loose.

Clearly, a lot of trouble is taken over the food preparation and then the actual cooking. Would recommend the venue as fantastic value for money. A big shout out to the serving staff, Libby and Emma, who could not do enough for us and had smiles on their faces all evening although the place was full. The ambiance was all one would hope for from a country inn - beams and fires and lovely hangings on the walls. A first class experience.

They have had the same dishes on there for probably the last 10-11 years. The portion sizes are good and you do get your money worth but it's the same old stuff all the time. For a pub with such a unique location in the countryside you would think that there would be seasonal specials on a regular basis but there isn't. The food isn't exciting or adventurous. Some may argue that it is outdated! Pie and chips, scampi and chips, gammon and chips, steak and chips you see where I'm going with this? I pity the chef that has to cook this day in day out. With no flair or imagination I'd loose the will to live having to cook this all the time. Having said that the pub is pretty much fully booked every weekend so they must be doing something right at least? The food is cooked well although the steaks can be a bit hit and miss? If you want simple food and a menu that is so predictable it would make Mystic Meg look like an ammeter then this is the place for you. If you want somewhere with a bit more flair and excitement then go somewhere else. Personally with so much in offer in the way of food and drink I'd find somewhere else to eat and drink but everybody is different in their tastes.

Home made gravy is also a pour your own job, and the kitchen are always willing to bring more. Importantly, the accommodating chef provides all gluten free alternatives,, rather than just committing them from my plate or slapping some cardboard type replacement. Its worth mentioning that all the roasts have been tried, and loved, but every member decided on the lamb as the Queen. The roasts aren't cheap at around £11 a head but, for the quality served, its incredibly reasonable. This pub is clean and warm with roaring fires and friendly faces. It certainly wasn't an eating pub and pretty much a lawless land at times! Any way that was yonks ago! The pub has now stood the test of time for a number of years as a good eating pub. It has a cosy atmosphere and I've never been disappointed with the food. My last visit there was last Saturday for my Grandpappy's 79th birthday. 8 of us went and we were all more than happy with the food and service. Meals consumed on our table were my choice of beef, ale and mushroom pie, lamb shank, salmon, pork belly in a cider sauce, home made lasagne and the special: chicken supreme. The pie was excellent, marred only slightly by my food envy of Grandpappy's pork belly, wow! All in all a great night and based on this visit I have to give the Globe 5 stars, as it was a flawless meal and Grandpappy had the best birthday he could ask for. Good times.

Some years ago now The Globe had an impressive refurb, kicked out the under age rif raff and here you have the pub it is today. You still have the locals that gather at one end of the bar, but the back of pub is predominantly for dinners. You'll find the usual suspects on the menu, fish & chips, lasagna, steak etc. but the last few times if been I've chose from the specials board. Tonight was a family birthday so about 10 of us visited, I had Supreme of chicken which was served with rice and salad. It was good quality pub grub, nothing cordon blu but it was really tasty, decent portion and good value. My husband had the pie and chips, he enjoyed it although others who had the same complained it was a bit rich and the lid was 'too much crust'. The staff were fairly friendly, and attentive checking things were okay with our orders etc and willing to bring drinks to the table. My issue with The Globe is it does seem to lack atmosphere, I'm not sure what or how it just does, I never leave thinking 'I must go back'. Having said that it's always busy, so they must be doing something right.

As a youngster I used to love going to The Golden Heart with my family. It felt really comfortable and had loads of room inside and amazing front and back gardens. Unfortunately that has long but disappeared and the bar now feels more like a waiting room and the restaurant has now soul. It is a real shame because the food is really good. It's a bit over price for the area, but good all the same. The drinks are crazy prices for this side of town: £4.80 for a pint of ale! This place has so much potential, but unfortunately doesn't deliver. Such a shame!

I went to The Golden Heart yesterday for a Christmas lunch with my Mum, Nan and sisters and was…read morereally disappointed! We were told that they had a lot of Christmas lunch bookings and so we'd have a wait for food, so we got there early.... And were the first table in there. Within half an hour there were a few largish tables in (4-8 people) but the restaurant was by no means full, in fact not even half full. The drink prices are high for the area, so I chose the cheapest Rose on the menu, which I assumed was the house wine at £5 for a large glass. Soda water was charged at £1 a glass, most places will include this free of charge especially if you are eating. Most of us chose to eat from the set price lunch menu at £11.95 for two or £13.95 for three courses... But this menu only included flatbreads and a small choice of mains dishes. They hadn't had their fish delivery so the fish dishes were unavailable, but they did have fish cakes which is what I chose. When the food finally arrived (after an hour of waiting) it did look reasonably nice, presentation wise, and my family liked their flatbreads but my fish cakes were horrible! They didn't taste much of fish, more like cheese - I honestly would have guessed baked Camembert or something and that's not what I was after at all as I'm not much of a cheese fan! So we did a bit of swapping around and I had some of the duck flatbread which as nice enough. We all chose a pudding, they took another 30 minutes to arrive and weren't warm as they should be... I had treacle tart with ginger cream - didn't taste a bit like ginger! When we got the bill I realised I'd been charged £7 for my wine, so I questioned it and apparently the house wine is not the cheap one, it's a few choices down on the menu and costs more???!! I don't know anywhere else I've been where the house wine is not the first listed and cheapest on the menu??! Very bizarre! There was no goodwill gesture either just a brief and miserable 'sorry' from what I assumed was the manager on the day. All in all it wasn't a pleasant experience, there was a frosty reception from most staff apart from a girl on the bar, who was very nice, a ridiculous wait in a restaurant no one would class as busy at all (who knows how they would cope on a busy Mothers Day!) food wasn't up to scratch, and drinks overpriced. I've been going to the Golden Heart since I was a kid and it used to be one of the best pubs in the area for families in the summer and it was relatively cheap and cheerful back then... Its transformation into a trendy country pub initially gave it a 'quality' status and we would go for special occasions for a nice meal, but since I feel it has gone downhill and as a result you are paying over the odds for nothing special and so I wouldn't recommend it, sadly!
