It's a traditional pub to its core, with a good selection of local ales at excellent prices. It's got low, wooden beamed ceilings and open fires and just the kind of pub you can expect a resident dog to stroll around and gain affection from the ale supping clients. The last time I came here it was on decidedly wintery night, and the pub did just the trick for an evening tipple in its cosy, warm atmosphere. They've got a few seats outside as well, so when the weather is good you can admire the view of the local rolling hills and countryside, and watch the sunset over the distant hills...(that is, whilst the planes land at Bristol Airport on top of the hill on the other side of the valley). A really good local pub.

They even manage to to get a view of some nice countryside whilst only being a half hour walk from Clifton. Perfect for those of that aspire to be the sort of people that go on long walks to country pubs but don't quite have the time/inclination. Cosy and localish, this is a typical country pub, well worth a visit to get away from the stresses and strains of Bristol.

One of the other reviewers described it best as a "three star pub with an eleventy billion star…read morereview." We were visiting and staying in the Clifton area for just one day, and several friends recommended checking out the historic suspension bridge, then going to the "shit pub" next to it for some lunch with the view. While I was expecting a dive, the indoor dining area was more like a nicer restaurant. It was a colder November day, and we wanted to sit on the large patio to enjoy the views. The female server seemed to very stressed and unnerved. She seemed to get angry at us when we tried to order at the bar, but also didn't want to seat us ("NO! You need to tell me your table number and THEN I can place your order. I need the table number first! I won't know where to send it out!") when we didn't know the process. Throughout the ordering process, she just seemed annoyed by us. She rushed us, didn't even show us the full menu (I didn't see it until I was outside) and we were looking forward to going outside just to get away. I was happy to see Patron XO Café on the shelves and ordered that with coke and lime, and we took our drinks outside to wait. We took pictures with the scenic background, and waited, and waited. Finally, after 45 minutes (no one else was being brought food either), I went inside and asked the male server (I didn't want to deal with her anymore) about our order. He apologized profusely and told us he would check on it. We explained that we had limited time before going back to our hotel and if they hadn't started on the food yet, just to cancel the order. The order was brought out a few minutes later, and he offered us another round of complimentary drinks, which was nice. The food was actually very, very good! We ordered a cheese plate and a French onion soup, which was better than any of the French onion soups we'd ordered in France. Because of the location and view, I'm sure this place attracts plenty of patrons as it is, but it has potential to be so much more.

The food is ok - pies with chips and mushy peas, soup of the day with bread. Nothing to shout home about really. Come on a sunny day and hang on the terrace may give this a 4-star rating, but we came on a rainy Boxing Day 2012.

This is a real British pub experience I recommend to anyone. Even more so if you are looking to try…read moresome fantastic local ale. It's only a tiny pub but it attracts a lot of locals, which adds to the sense of community (there's usually a dog sniffing around after a tennis ball that people are throwing from each end of the pub). They have loads of board games to choose from, and a massive selection of Empire magazines, which is perfect for nerds like me. They have a great selection of cider and red wine as well, but really this is a vintage pub of which there are not too many left. By that I mean it hasn't been bought and kitted out with a shiny, soulless new interior and a 'gastro' style kitchen that focus on the garnish on your burger more than the quality of the pint in your hand. It is a cosy pub and the perfect place to sit and chat with mates. Check out the quiz on Tuesdays as well!

Although I live…read moreround the corner, this is definitely a place filled with those who've been in the area for a lot longer than four months, gathering round an excellent selection of beers and wines in a cosy, fairy lit atmosphere. The eclectically decorated walls are plastered over with beer mats from all over the world. There's also beautiful old original Victorian fittings which add a real sense of character. I was particularly impressed by the selection of Belgian beers (the owner is a fan), with all the matching glasses to boot. This is clearly run by someone who appreciated their alcohol, and bar staff tend to have a lot to say on the matter too, Although there never seems to be anyone in there, The Victoria is the perfect place to sit down on a wet and windy night to sip on a couple of 10% Kasteels.
