My friend and I started frequenting this pub "every couple of Wednesdays" as soon as lockdown rules allowed and I have to say that I've never, ever been disappointed. There's a steep walk to this backstreet local, but I for one think it's worth it. The beer garden (concrete and small, but with a rooftop garden appeal) is great for supping a lunchtime pint or for munching on a cracking plate of ham, egg and crisps. Inside on an autumn evening (perhaps) you'll find two bars and a lounge area where locals and students club together for the weekly quiz. Once you've found it, I can see why you'd want to stay. Good food served all day, each day and I would go to say it's some of the best modern pub food you're likey to order in the area. The pub has a decent sized well kept garden to the back and also a seating area out the front, amongst the hustle and bustle of the busy High Street. Staff are very welcoming and while its clear it's a locals pub it's also somewhere that accommodates good pub food and drinks for the odd night out/Sunday Roast. The food menu isn't huge which I think is good to keep the quality, which it does. You can expect in trend meals such as 'Mac & Cheese' & pulled pork etc as well as tradition pub favourites. However I feel the menu could be refreshed more often. I can highly recommend the gnocchi on the current menu. You can tell I've eaten there once or twice! Steak night on a Thursday is great and really popular. 2 good quality steak meals and a bottle of wine for £30. There are various themed evenings to check out and the odd event such as a cider and pork day festival that happened early this year, which was a lot of fun and family friendly to boot. All in all the Cross Hands is a good modern pub in the fishponds area that blends your classic local with good quality dining. It's not the cheapest option of watering holes in the area but is great and also definitely accommodates a wee tipple on a Friday and Saturday night!

What I really like about it is that it has a really cosy, proper pub feel to it, while also being a really good restaurant. The food these guys serve up is fantastic! They do a steak night which is every Thursday which is 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £30, and with the quality of the food its a great deal. They have good outside seating areas at the front me back and have a brilliant hog roast and cider festival in the summer, with live bands and lots of banter. Sunday Lunches are also really good. But it's not all about the food, however good it is. This is a really good pub that feels like you're in your local, even if it's the first time you've been.

It was an excellent tasty dinner in an old Welsh pub. The staff was super staff and cheerful. There was a great selection for dinner. I had the chocolate brownie with cotted vanilla ice cream. We left a big tip. They earned it.

This is a fantastic place to begin or end a trip around the Museum of Welsh Life, which has it's castle entrance just across the way. When the weather is bright, then this little pocket of picturesque Cardiff tends to fill up with people like ants coming out of an anthill. But even when very busy, the Plymouth Arms retains a very relaxed atmosphere due to its spacious and neat garden layout and particularly homely and well-decorated inside. This pub is certainly NOT a Weatherspoons. The waiting and bar staff wear crisp white shirts and ties, and the food on the menu is a little more along the lines of venison steaks, rather than beef burgers. This is an ideal place to spend a slightly more classy afternoon (although don't get me wrong, anyone is welcome here!)

They didn't bother to contact me to explain or offer another day, I just got an automated email from their booking system. Emails to the landlord take several days to get a response and he has also not been reachable by phone. The only response from the landlord has been to say that they've decided not to be open Sunday January 1st 2023, but if they're going to take reservations so far ahead they should honour them, and simply block out days on the system for future bookings that they won't be open for. Their website says they are uniquely inhospitable. I agree with that assessment.

It went through a big refurb a few years back and the interior is homely and comfy. The food is generally of a good standard, however I have had the odd disappointing dish. We were late for our booking and the staff were really nice and said the table's yours for as long as you want it, so don't worry. I had a tough decision to make between the beef and the lamb and the decider was whether they'd let me have a Yorkshire pudding - and they did! It also came with swede mash, red cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, roast potatoes and mint and cranberry jelly. You can pay for cauliflower cheese too so of course I went for that! The gravy is different depending on which meat you have, and that's a big tick for me - in the words of a Bristolian, proper job! The owners were in there getting stuck in with the work and the landlord was a real character. He said "the world needs more chaos" and he stood behind the bar (but the Sunday dining experience was far from chaotic and one of the most relaxed I've endured). We could see there was a projector and screen and I'd like to go back to watch a film out there. I think I suffered from a huge case of someone-bigged-this-up-too-much when visiting for an infamous Sunday roast yesterday. Everything was really lovely but I left feeling a bit disappointed and I can't put my finger on why.

They do my favourite Sunday roast in town (and there are plenty of great ones around) with sweet red cabbage, loads of juicy beef with horseradish and better roast potatoes than my Granny's (sorry Gran). And if you get there early enough they have every single Sunday paper for you to choose from (dam I have given away my secret). So you can sit reading the Sunday papers, drinking bitter (shandy) and eating an amazing roast dinner, followed up by their homemade desserts. I recommend the beef roast, but I've heard good things about the chicken. It is a popular pub for good reason, because that's just what it is, a very decent, honest pub with good food and drink and the best atmosphere around. They haven't had to become a Gastropub just to do great food; they just got a brilliant chef. You will always find a table outside; just make sure you huddle up under the heat lamps in the colder months. The garden is beautifully lit and you can smoke in it. But most people don't realise they have a huge area upstairs, where you can sit, eat, drink, sing & dance, which is usually a little bit warmer, unless this section is being used by local performers who put on shows here, which are open to the public. This is a pub unlike any other and an important part of Bristol's history, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience what a real pub should be like.
