While visiting family they recommended our farewell dinner be here. So glad they did. I was a little worried about the reviews until I saw the dates....most bad was over 10 years ago. I Loved this place! The sea bass and pork belly were dividing! The chicken kabob was filing. The Aubergine Parmigiana was different than we were used too and had a bit too much sauce but was food Forgot to take pix is the food as we were starving and demolished it! Our waitress was perfectly lovely as busy as she was and the price for 4 of us to eat and drink couldn't be best! Would love to come again on my next trip across the pond! read more

I spent a very pleasant little while out in the Plymouth Arms' back garden area over the weekend, and have decided to report back! This is a fantastic place to begin or end a trip around the Museum of Welsh Life, which has it's castle entrance just across the way. When the weather is bright, then this little pocket of picturesque Cardiff tends to fill up with people like ants coming out of an anthill. But even when very busy, the Plymouth Arms retains a very relaxed atmosphere due to its spacious and neat garden layout and particularly homely and well-decorated inside. This pub is certainly NOT a Weatherspoons. The waiting and bar staff wear crisp white shirts and ties, and the food on the menu is a little more along the lines of venison steaks, rather than beef burgers. This is an ideal place to spend a slightly more classy afternoon (although don't get me wrong, anyone is welcome here!) read more

We ate here 3 times in a 2 week period - virtually unheard of for us. But it was conveniently located, had a great biergarten, and a variety of food for our diverse group. It is close to St. Fagans, and since there is not much to eat at St. Fagans, I recommend this in conjunction with a visit. It would make for a fun day out, especially in good weather. Our first visit was on a Monday after a busy weekend and they were out of many things including all salads, which was a big draw for our vegans in the group. We ordered other things and the poor waiter continued to come out several more times with items they were out of, forcing us to choose again. I'm sure the kitchen was as frustrating to him as our questions were but he handled himself well and in the end we left happy. The next time we called ahead to confirm they had salads. They did. Some of the best we have had in the UK (outside of major cities). However, I ordered the same salad twice and it was made quite different each time; but both were nice. The second time they were out of the fish pie and a couple of other items. The third time they seemed to have all items we requested and the fish pie was a big hit. Also enjoyed were the beef and merlot pie and the lamb shank. Skip the veggie burger, it was just ok. We ate outside 2 out of 3 times. It's a lovely space with plenty of parking in back of the building. Bathrooms were messy, but they were busy. Service was good each day; friendly and adequately efficient. Next door to the lovely Old Post office in St Fagans is the Plymouth Arms is a great little pub that's owned by 'Village inns' so if you're familiar with them then you'll know the menu already. Traditional pub food but really well cooked and a few daily specials thrown in for good measure. Sadly I don't rate this place as highly as it's little sister 'The captains wife'. On my last visit the food was overly greasy, the beer was off and the staff were awkward, bordering on rude and very unhelpful. Such a shame because it's usually pretty good. Great for a family Sunday lunch but expect a bit of a wait as they do get very busy. read more

The epitome of a civilised pub. A nice garden and lots of parking. Right across from the Museum of Welsh Life. One of those pubs where you can actually hear someone else speaking. However, the vegetarian menu is very limited, if it really exists at all. I was taken there by a kind boyfriend (we don't get out much so this was pretty exciting) and I chose something vegetarian from the menu (I'm a vegetarian so I needed to do that). When I tried to order it I was told it wasn't on the menu. I tried the other possible dish (understand I don't eat fish either) and was told that was off. I was condemned to eating chips. Whenever we head out on a Sunday for a drink or a bit of a roast we always seem to default to the Plymouth Arms. It is just so consistent that we could risk other places, but then, you know, you'll just drive about and only end up there anyway, so why not just give in? They usually have good beers on, as well as all the standards. But the food is what really draws us in. It is nice pub grub. Not too posh so you feel like you're in a restaurant and not a pub, but not so obviously a packet microwaved to be true 'cheap pub grub'. The staff are always friendly and the mixture of table and bar service is somehow comforting. You're not being fussed over, but you don't have to get up when your food has arrived. If there are no roasts left on a Sunday (although the roasties are a bit sad) I can genuinely recommend the burgers. Really good, proper meat burgers, with good chips and good bread. Again, nothing over the top, but just something simple done well. It is a pleasant place to sit, but I'd swerve the garden in the summer if you don't like wasps! read more

I come to this pub/restaurant once every year, usually at the start or middle of December. Last year when I visited this pub I thought that food had defiantly gone down hill, I couldn't even finish my meal, but I didn't give up, so this year I returned, and I'm really glad I did! The menu had more variety, not only pub style cooking but a selection of delicious meals and sandwiches and a much wider range of starters. The food was mouth watering! I couldn't believe how much it had changed, I have been craving another meal here since that day! and from now on, I wont be visiting once a year but once a month! The bar has always had a good selection of wines, spirits, lagers and beers, but now they have stocked up on some real welsh ales, I was delighted by this and immediately ordered a pint of Tomos Watkin Premium OSB ale. The reason I love this pub so much is because they really do go all out for Christmas, but they don't go over the top like some places, the fairy lights, holly, candles and trimmings give the place such a magical feel, the inside gives a sense that it is glowing and you feel instantly welcomed as soon as you arrive. This is a gorgeous pub and is the perfect place to stop off and have a bite to eat or a quick drink after venturing around St.Fagans for the day. read more

Had pub lunch in the garden on a beautiful sunny October day. It was really busy so service was quite slow and, having queued once to place my order at the bar, was told that the burger was off so had to queue again after heading back to the garden to ask my partner what his second choice was. My gammon was pretty standard (but the pineapple randomly still had the skin on, presumably to show it hadn't come from a tin?!); boyf had to send his piripiri chicken back because the seasoned wedges were suffering from a bad case of oversalting (they were white). Cutlery and condiments come from pots on a tray which a waitress eventually brought to us. Gets 3 stars because of the nice garden and lovely weather. read more

A very warm welcome is to be found at the Plymouth Arms. A nice, friendly atmosphere, particularly lovely in the winter when the log fires are blazing. A great selection of food to suit most tastes and the desserts are worth visiting for along :) Highly recommend this to my friends as a great venue for lunch or dinner - child friendly too! read more

My wife's favourite pub. Food is very good. Atmosphere is quite good, as well. Best times to go are when the weather is nice and you can sit outside in the massive garden, or when the weather is awful and you can sit next to one of the two fireplaces. Draws people of all ages. A very good place to go if you actually like talking to your friends -- I can't stand pubs that blare music. read more

Every time I go into this Pub - beautifully located in Old St. Fagans village - I swear it will be the last time! But it's handy for my Cricket Club so I keep creeping back. It has the advantages of a large car park and gardens - but that's all. The staff - if you can find any - put the customer a distant last after activities such as filling and emptying the dishwasher, putting cutlery into drawers, and walking empty-handed in and out of the kitchen. In consequence the queues are enormous. The service, when it finally arrives, is grudging and grumpy. The fault has to be the pub's management, because a similar pub in their Group (Vintage Inns owned by M&B) is the Traveller's Rest Caerphilly, where the staff are superb. read more

This pub has recently had a make-over. It is still an 'olde worlde' type pub, but the paint is now fresh and clean and the decor is less cluttered. The food used to be excellent, but when I visited a few weeks ago, I was disappointed. This is one of M & B's branded 'vintage' pubs, so the menu is standard. Everything that I ordered seemed to have been microwaved (and not very well), rather than freshly cooked. The staff are still very friendly and the sevice is prompt but without quality food, I see little point in visiting this pub for a meal. There are tables outside so when the weather is warm it would be nice to have a drink here That would make a nice end to day visiting the St Fagans National History Museum which is just over the road. read more

Great little place, warm and friendly with decent food. Busy on Sundays but they will always try to accommodate you. Large garden but never been here in the summer or on a warm day; so just guessing it's a lovely place to spend an evening with friends. I have been here on several ocassions and it's never been for the food. Yes the food is reasonable but not full of flavour. If you want to go somewhere for a drink on a nice day and sit in their gardens then this is a good pub. But for food there are better around. read more

Nice place. Really, really attentive, helpful and friendly staff. Free wi-fi which allowed me to get some work done after a decent lunch. I had the Spanish Chicken Breast £8.95. It came with a few slices of decent chorizo, but a weird something else (cheese?), whatever it is they should ditch it as it detracted from the other stuff. There was also a roasted pepper - not really roasted though; none of the skin was coloured in anyway and whilst it was soft, there wasn't that sweetness you get from proper roasting. And some baby new potatoes that were over done. The sauce with it was nice and sweet, but need to be reduced more as the flavour was lost a little. All in all, nice enough and lovely people. 3/5. PS As an aside the free wi-fi is via O2 and to register you get texted... I'm on O2 and there was no reception in the pub, so I had to step outside to the car-park to receive the text! read more

A beautifully themed old style pub which plays it's part in the history of this area, set in the historic village of St Fagans, just a stones throw away from the (Free) 'Welsh folk museum'. The Plymouth Arms is set in amongst trees, and neighbours with churches and old cottages, the pub is mainly for eating and relaxing as opposed to a drinking pub, and there are plentiful tables outside and in to choose from. The pub has a great deal of character and a very good menu. They have traditional log fires burning during the colder months, and host varied events. The landlord is always keen to support local initiatives. The pub has a 'cultured air' about it to say the least, and is a very homely venue. read more

Such a lovely old pub in a really beautiful part of cardiff. The old buildings and cottages around this area are wonderful. We visit this pub every couple of months, especially when it is cold and gloomy as they have a lovely wood fire to feel cosy by. Visited for lunch today and was as ever, instantly comfortable with the setting. The staff are also really friendly and chatty despite the pub always being very busy. I was however, very disapointed with my lunch. I ordered a chiken BLT sandwich and the best way to describe it was 'floppy and tasteless'. Very unusual to have a bad meal here though. My hubby was more than happy with his steak sandwich I should point out. Perhaps better luck next time. Definately worth a visit though if you are in the area. read more

Cosy and comfortable, when not busy. Always seem to be couples on first dates, tucked away in the nooks and corners! Good pub chain food - meats/fish usually cooked as they should be, veg not as varied or always to the same standard. Seasonal menu offers decent variations on the usual (I had guinea fowl, my wife slow braised belly pork) but 'specials' are usually from the menu, perhaps on offer. Puddings vary little, if at all. Beverages not up to scratch, except for fresh juices in the summer and some wines. Staff sometimes too busy in summer, but tonight very attentive. A nice night out for a genuinely relaxing time in a cosy venue. Ideally placed for the superb visitor attraction (currently free entry) the Museum of Welsh Life - gardens, grand house, living history and events, park with collection of rebuilt historic houses and brilliant for tea and bara brith in the old style! read more

Me and my mother always liked this pub as it is situated in a very pretty location opposite the Museum Of Welsh Life and the food and atmosphere was always good. However we felt that during our last visit the food and the service wasn't as good. It was very busy but they didn't seem to have enough staff to cope with the demand and the meals that we received were crispy and overcooked. We also felt as if they were rushing us to get out of there quickly. read more

Great fish and chips. Good beer garden, lovely on a warm sunny day. Peroni on tap too :-)

The menu looked exciting but the food was very poor. The duck was overcooked, vegetables undercooked, worst scallop dish I have ever been served, tasteless. None of the meals appeared to have been seasoned at all. The chef either can't cook or doesn't care what he's sending out. Very disappointing all round. We had 2 starters and main courses and 2 bottles of wine and paid 66 pounds for the bill. The vegetables had been taken off, but for what we had I think it was too expensive. Only upside was a very pleasant and helpful waitress. Unfortunately I will not be eating here again and will not recommend it to anyone. Shame as this is a nice little pub and it wouldn't take a lot of effort to get the food right. read more
