And they have an excellent kids menu, which delighted our picky eater. You need to tell me your table number and THEN I can place your order. I need the table number first! I won't know where to send it out!") when we didn't know the process. Throughout the ordering process, she just seemed annoyed by us. She rushed us, didn't even show us the full menu (I didn't see it until I was outside) and we were looking forward to going outside just to get away. I was happy to see Patron XO Café on the shelves and ordered that with coke and lime, and we took our drinks outside to wait. We took pictures with the scenic background, and waited, and waited. Finally, after 45 minutes (no one else was being brought food either), I went inside and asked the male server (I didn't want to deal with her anymore) about our order. He apologized profusely and told us he would check on it. We explained that we had limited time before going back to our hotel and if they hadn't started on the food yet, just to cancel the order. The order was brought out a few minutes later, and he offered us another round of complimentary drinks, which was nice. The food was actually very, very good! We ordered a cheese plate and a French onion soup, which was better than any of the French onion soups we'd ordered in France. The eclectically decorated walls are plastered over with beer mats from all over the world. There's also beautiful old original Victorian fittings which add a real sense of character. I was particularly impressed by the selection of Belgian beers (the owner is a fan), with all the matching glasses to boot. This is clearly run by someone who appreciated their alcohol, and bar staff tend to have a lot to say on the matter too, Although there never seems to be anyone in there, The Victoria is the perfect place to sit down on a wet and windy night to sip on a couple of 10% Kasteels.

They have a local guest ale every week, usually over from Bath. They also have some really great beer & lager, like Fruli (strawberry beer) from Belgium and other white beers like Hoegaarden and Erdinger. I know the company who owns this venue are very conscious that each of their pubs or bars has its own identity that reflects its location, and this certainly does that. They are also very music conscious and you can often here some of the newest up and coming bands being circulated on their playlist. The old manager (Rich) did an amazing job of giving the place an eccentric, unique and bold style ('it's like a normal pub but frilly' some people have said). There's really interesting local art and one-off pieces of furniture everywhere. The Clifton really is perfect in the winter. You can snuggle up on one of the many sofas that stretch out into the huge back section of the pub and hide away from the miserable weather outside. The staff are always cool and fun. If you see Andy tell him to eat some dinner, he's too skinny. Make sure you try the chilli puffs & wasabi peas: the ultimate in bar snacking.
