Not what you'd expect from a roast…read more - New potatoes with one roast potato- but roast potatoes with internal black spots from bruising or early decay. - The 'seasonal' vegetables (think they may have to research what seasonal vegetables are- Swede in May but no Brocolli?) may have been lightly steamed at best but again not what you'd expect with a roast lunch and stone cold by the time they reached the table- some of the leeks I tried were verging on raw rather than al-dente or tender. - No Yorkshire puddings served with the standard roast, only with Pork/ Beef. Nutroast was soggy and tasted like stuffing. - Meat was ok, nothing special. - Asked for a dessert menu as otherwise leaving hungry, and was presented with some scribbled items on the back on a receipt roll. The real issue came when we asked to speak to a manager regarding our table's water bottle. There was clearly something floating in the bottom of our water bottle and after closer inspection we noticed that there was something stuck on the side. I had assumed it was perhaps limescale from the water system but after speaking with one of the members of staff they informed us it was probably tissue. We asked to speak to a manager at which point somebody came over. We asked them if they were the manager and they abruptly told us they were actually the owner. At this point I should have read his tone as aggressive but, wanting to give them the benefit of doubt, explained to them the problem we had with the water. The owner abruptly told us that he actually checks the CCTV for any complaint he receives, and as the water was filtered and the bottles cleaned daily that it was impossible for there to be tissue in there. We asked him what he meant by that, his statement about checking CCTV and our complaint being impossible felt as if he was accusing us of either lying or planting the tissue in the bottle itself (which we had been drinking throughout). He didn't have an answer for us other than the issue being entirely impossible and pointing in our faces that he would check the CCTV. My partner asked him not to point in our faces and the owner told my partner to 'watch his mouth'- which completely shocked me. After asking the owner to leave our table so we could end the confrontational situation and ease our embarrassment in front of all the other patrons, he demanded that we should be the ones to leave and he promptly left. We left immediately after, wanting to save ourselves further embarrassment, and started on our half hour journey back to Bristol. Sadly at eight months pregnant I couldn't face the humiliation walking through the pub to use the bathrooms so felt very uncomfortable on the journey back. I emailed the Manager, Sandi, to ask them to check the CCTV as they said they would, and explain why we were treated this way- it was mortifying and I was confused how or why an owner would speak to customers like this? I tried to be understanding, after all with lockdown easing recently it may just be that operations and service were rusty, so I wanted to give them the opportunity to respond before I wrote any public reviews. We had really looked forward to this outing and came away feeling saddened and confused. They replied reiterating that they still assumed we had planted the tissue in the water bottle ourselves (?!) and that our complaints about the food had warranted being removed from the restaurant. They also accused my partner of being aggressive towards the owner in front of myself, his Mother and our 7yo son, when it was quite clear that the owner was confrontational and aggressive himself. Shocking and sad to write such a terrible review. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g504119-d3167729-r791133220-The_Salthouse_Bar_and_Restaurant-Clevedon_Somerset_England.html#

I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.

It's bloody brilliant. The pints are always straight from the barrel and absolutely fantastic, and the locals are always a great laugh. The decor of the place resembles a blokes house that he converted into a pub, which might sound off putting, but it emits such an incredible charm that you cant help but fall in love with the place. There's a huge outside seating area which is essentially half a football pitch thats well kept and great for children. The location is slap bang in the country, with little but cows and horses for miles around. It's a great bike ride in the day to get to, and certainly a taxi ride at night (no buses in these parts my laaaad!) This is a unique pub, and very special. If you fancy treating your mates to a great night out, then you wont be disappointed mingling with the locals and getting a bit of hops in you.

A lovely local pub in Winterbourne Down…read more This has been my family's local pub for around 20 years and it hasn't changed one bit. It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.
