I never thought I would say this of any inn that didn't serve Harvey's Sussex Bitter, but this is…read morethe finest inn I have EVER visited - and I shall be returning as often as possible, considering that I live in Kent! The beer brewed especially for the inn is wonderful! There are more that 240 whiskies to choose from. The wine list is enormous and excellent (the landlord even blends his own house white - the Three Choirs). The food is wonderful - good, simple, locally-produced and imaginative - and not over-priced. There is also an excellent restaurant menu. Accommodation is full of character - see the website (above link) for further details..See also on the website how the inn got its name! If you can manage to find this pub, you will never regret the effort! - Bar - Monday to Saturday 12 noon to 2.30pm 6.00pm to 11.00pm Sunday 12 noon to 3.00pm 7.00pm to 10.30pm - Bar Meals - Everyday 12 noon to 2.00pm 7.00pm to 10.00pm - Restaurant - Tuesday to Saturday 7.30pm to 9.30pm

Booking for the restaurant area is essential, but turn-up early to get yourself a seat if youre eating in the bar area. The menu is not huge - which I find is a good sign in most cases. There are always different choices everytime I go back so I don't get bored. The food is very tasty and the prices are very reasonable. Just make sure that you're not the designated driver to enjoy the excellent selection of wines and whiskies!!

Once a humble collection of three silver miners' cottages, it became a pub in 1857 and is now cosy and full of character, with a wood-burning stove, exposed stonework walls, beamed ceilings and flagstone flooring, our beer garden overlooks the river & the views are extraordinary! We're really passionate about using locally sourced ingredients; all our food is freshly home-cooked using seasonal local produce: our popular daily menus of fresh local produce comes with impeccable local credentials (locals speak of our seafood-based mains in hushed tones of reverence) & are served by our very friendly & most welcoming team of staff. We specialise in providing an excellent local pint: a good range of beers & specially selected real ales, all the ales and ciders are sourced from local brewers, alongside a happy mix of customers and warmly welcoming licensees. Renowned for our live music offering & the convivial chatter, the musicians & Bands in the area often perform an intimate gig of an evening. The lady on reception was truly excellent - friendly, informative, professional. Bridie in the…read morerestaurant was also great and looked after us very well. We enjoyed going round the museum (very good; watch the film too...), farm shop and of course not to forget the souvenir place Great breakfast! Very quiet, despite the proximity of the main road below; a nice big room and a good sized bathroom for once...very comfortable indeed But its a generous 4*, as we were not enamoured with dinner - we both chose the curry special but unfortunately it was rather dull and, in particular, were not best pleased with the wine bottle being put on the table, unopened, and with wine glasses dripping wet from the dishwasher (and not actually clean after that experience) which the barman didn't think was an issue...Bridie tried her best to sort it out but it wasn't down to her or the waiting staff...that rather dampened the evening and experience...The Jamaica Inn own survey doesn't give space to elaborate... But the breakfast was fine and all in all, with the 1 exception, it was a decent place to stay and good value for money...the views all around are spectacular...and the Alpaca Trekking / cats / meerkats place a few miles away is a-maz-ing and a must

An absolute gem of a pub in one of Devon's prettiest, most tucked away coastal villages. The…read moreMason's Arms is, quite simply, a fantastic place in every sense of the word. I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.
