The previous landlord tried really hard to boost this amazing pub to recover from the damage that…read morewas quickly done by his predecessor and wife, sadly it was always going to be a challenge and the Church House Inn changed hands again in 2015. This change has brought a breath of fresh air, the welcome is again warm and friendly, the food exceptional, gone is that massive menu of countless items which were only possible with the help of a freezer and microwave, never a good combination! Now the menu is manageable and cooked to order by a more than competent chef, for the first time in a long while we see a pass with heat lamps to keep the food hot a sign of a chef who cares about his creations enough to serve them hot and fresh, he does not disappoint either it really is exceptional food, hot, fresh and well presented but more to the point it tastes amazing. The price, we'll give it a try and you decide, we think it offers fantastic value for money and is run by a team of caring professionals so it is back on our hit list "must do" places our only worry is that too many will agree and we won't just drop in but have to book. Well done all at the Church House Inn for bringing this diamond its sparkle back.

This is possibly the oldest inn in England, dating from 1028, however it started as a hostel to house the masons who were building the church next door. The menu is excellent and the food has never let us down. The menu is suplemented by an enormous daily specials board with the accent on fish and game. There is a good choice of real ales and some of the other fizzy stuff for people who have lost their sense of taste. The wine list is extensive and contains some really good, reasonably-priced stuff. As can be imagined in view of the age of the building, the inn has a great traditional feel. The latest landlord is a clone of his predecessors in that his welcome is warm and his patience long well Judi always changes her mind at the last minute! So on your next visit to Devon, set your satnav to this lovely old inn. It's popular, though, so I would recommend that you book.

It was very welcoming and clean with all new bathrooms with cozy robes, complimentary beer, fizzy water, biscuits, and we enjoyed some great food. Breakfast was included. Also very dog friendly! They provided a dog bed for the family dog. Oh and very lovely beer brewed on side! Will be back for sure!

An absolute gem of a pub in one of Devon's prettiest, most tucked away coastal villages. The…read moreMason's Arms is, quite simply, a fantastic place in every sense of the word. I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.

I was recommended this place by a friend who had visited Torquay recently before us and it was that…read moregood he said that he went 3 times on his trip. There is no way that I would have found this place had it not been for him as it is really off track. I hope that more people see this and give this place a try. You can also stay here so I hope that counts. We decided to give it a go as we were looking for somewhere to have lunch and we had just finished at the Babbacombe Model Village, this place is only 20 min tops north of there. Its in a place called Maidencombe down a road called Steep Hill and yes, Steep Hill IS a Steep Hill (make sure you are in the right sort of car in getting there). Set in a quaint little village of thatched roofed buildings this place is lovely looking, has a lovely little garden and is even located nicely next to a small walk down to a tiny private beach. it was really quiet when we got there at 12 but we were out of season also. We ordered a couple of soft drinks from the very friendly bar staff who greeted us well on the way in. We sat in the restaurant part of the pub and decided to both have Game Pie. Nicely priced at £8 each. What came out was an absolute joy, the chips were superb, the veg was superb, the pie was amazing and the filling was some of the best ale gravy i've ever tasted complemented by juniper berries. It was like enjoying the delights of a country hedgerow. I highly recommend trying here when you visit this area of the country, you will not be disappointed at all. I might even look into the prospect of staying here one time so I can enjoy the pleasures of what goes on in the evening. This is what country pub dining is all about!
