At first glance it appears that this is just a tourist stop and yet one is truly stepping into so much history from centuries ago to WW II at the Jamaican Inn. Strongly recommended no, matter if staying overnight or just stopping by that all take in the museum and tge grounds where the notorious and the highest esteemed once treaded. We booked in for a Sunday Roast, we were seated quite quickly, it's one of those places where you look at the menu and order at the bar. The starter came out quite quickly and was tasty. We then waited 45 minutes for our main course, we had to ask someone if they had forgotten our order. Then when the roast came out we had to wait and ask after another 10 minutes for the veg. They brought the veg out and it was supposed to be peas, cabbage and Swede mashed with carrot but it was just peas and cabbage, although there was a crusty smear of what may have been Swede and carrot on the side of the dish...not very appealing. The roast potatoes were very soggy, not browned or crispy at all although the turkey was cooked well. All in all, a disappointing experience and no attempt by staff to make it better, no one checked in again with us, I think they may have been embarrassed, I know I would have been. read more

The lady on reception was truly excellent - friendly, informative, professional. Bridie in the restaurant was also great and looked after us very well. We enjoyed going round the museum (very good; watch the film too...), farm shop and of course not to forget the souvenir place Great breakfast! Very quiet, despite the proximity of the main road below; a nice big room and a good sized bathroom for once...very comfortable indeed But its a generous 4*, as we were not enamoured with dinner - we both chose the curry special but unfortunately it was rather dull and, in particular, were not best pleased with the wine bottle being put on the table, unopened, and with wine glasses dripping wet from the dishwasher (and not actually clean after that experience) which the barman didn't think was an issue...Bridie tried her best to sort it out but it wasn't down to her or the waiting staff...that rather dampened the evening and experience...The Jamaica Inn own survey doesn't give space to elaborate... But the breakfast was fine and all in all, with the 1 exception, it was a decent place to stay and good value for money...the views all around are spectacular...and the Alpaca Trekking / cats / meerkats place a few miles away is a-maz-ing and a must read more

What a wonderful stay! My partner and I decided to stay at a haunted pub. We had each read the book based off the inn. We went into the museum, which was excellent. Our room was lovely and the bathroom had a rubber duck! The room had a great view of Bodmin Moor. The evening meal was very good, as was breakfast. It was clean. The gift shop was excellent with a nice cashier. read more

If we are on our way to Cornwall, The Jamaica Inn has become a necessary stop off. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic there was a queue at the entrance which, to us, is no problem but to some it seemed to be. Many had reserved tables so we were unsure whether we would get a table. Quick chat to the young man and he was so helpful and found us a table even though we were only in for a drink. Service was 'slow' because of the various covid precautions but very friendly taking into account the extra work those guys took on their shoulders. A couple, on the table next to us, complained that they had been waiting ten minutes. Like most cases this was an exaggeration as we saw them arrive and knew how long they had sat there. Another funny point is when he was served he asked 'What is the signature dish?' This is basically a pub. I advised the steak pie which I had enjoyed on previous visits. Still a great 'pub' and this will still be a stop off on our next trip down to the West Country. read more

Very fun, pirate-y pub! Came with family after visiting Bodmin Moor. Food was good and pretty average for an English pub. I had the beef curry and loved it. They had two different gift stores with many items to bring home both for kids and adults. You order at the counter and then they bring food to your table. Cozy spot with booths and low ceilings. A wonderful cosy traditional pub and restaurant situated on the wild Bodmin Moor, a great stop off on your way down to Lands end. The Jamaica inn boasts a cobbled courtyard, roaring log fires, beamed ceilings and Daphne Du Maurier Smugglers Museum for a small admission fee. The Jamaica has an interesting history but was famous for being the isolated stop off point for smugglers with their booty (Brandy and Rum) travelling from the Cornish coast in the 18th century. Look for the plaque on the floor informing you of some of its colourful past. It was a wintery day on the moor the day when we stopped off there, as people have since 1750, but we soon warmed up by a fire with a Rum 'n' Scrub. Its open all year around, and has a childrens play area with a pirate ship and a souvenir shop. Apparently there are a few ghosts as well, so beware if you stay in one of the 16 rooms. read more

I lined up to order a plowmans lunch of cheese & Cornish ham. This consisted of one square of Cheddar and one slice of ham, and one thick slice of bread. My companion had to ask for a 2nd slice.The plate was filled up with salad. For the price..it was a total RIP off..Never again... read more

Der Pub ist ein klein bisserl rummelig mit großem Selbstbedienungsbereich, Souvenirshop und kleinem Museum zu Daphne du Maurier (deren Schwester übrigens auf dem sehr schön gelegenen Friedhof von St. Winnows bei Lostwithiel/Cornwall begraben liegt). Das Essen ist OK, der Pub auch durchaus gemütlich und wer denn nach oder vor einem Besuch noch den Abstecher ins Moor macht, wird sich gerne an den Jamaica Inn zurückerinnern. read more

When I went there first a year ago, there was work being done on the kitchens - food was good but nothing special, drink fine, and the service friendly and efficient (due to the work in the kitchens, they were missing parts of the menu - but they more than compensated with the replacements). Now, however, the work is complete. And the food is FABULOUS. The rest is still great, of course, but the Jamaica Inn has definitely stepped up to my #1 spot for food, too. read more

This inn is situated on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. There is an incredibly interesting museum depicting the old smuggling legends. Kids love all the gory stuff. The views are amazing and there are some great walks. We had Christmas dinner there one year and found that although the food was very festive and the restaurant had been decorated in a really cheery way, there was no Christmassy atmosphere at all. read more

Back in February, I'd have given this Five stars. The food was great then, with a varied menu and plenty of veggie choices. The time before, back in November, it was also fantastic; but having just been there this weekend, I was very, very disappointed. For starters, the menu had been replaced by the old self-service slop that had blighted this place before - to add insult to injury, a copy of the old menu was still to be found lying around. If this wasn't bad enough, the whole place resembled a crèche; call me odd, but I don't go to pubs to hear a toddler knocking seven shades of whatever out of a toy xylophone. On the plus side, the beer is still good - Roughtor Ale in my case, but I only had a quarter of a pint before I gave up and left. read more

On arrival the pub looked lovely from the outside,but once inside and walked through to the main dinning area we were greeted with a large bland beamed room with white security cameras bolted to the beams. The decor was drab with out dated tables and chairs. We ordered from the main menu because the cafeteria type food bar that was in this room the food looked overcooked dry. My wife ordered home made spaghetti bolognese which she enjoyed. I ordered the Cornish beer batter haddock fish and chips with mushy peas, but I asked for garden peas. When my meal arrived the fish looked as though it had seen a ghost there was more batter than fish, the fish looked old and was very oily the chef had not looked at my order as mushy peas had been poured all over my chips yuuuuk . The food was very expensive for what was put in front of us I've had better food served from a roadside cafe. Overall very disappointed with our visit wouldn't waste my time in going again very poor. read more

Our stay at the Jamaica Inn was excellent. In fact I have stayed in lots of hotels in various countries from shabby travel lodges to 5 star plus and have never met such friendly helpful staff. We were there to experience the spookiness of the place, but unfortunately stayed in the newish part of the building so didn't really get to feel spooky. The room we stayed in was very clean and was in line with any good quality 'premier inn' type room. The bathroom was excellent and the water pressure in the shower was very strong. The bed was a new 4 poster. The pillows were good and the duvet etc. was comfortable. There was a blanket on the 'lighted' wardrobe for colder nights, but the room was too hot if anything, although you could open the windows. Opening the windows on the ground floor at night was I guess risky, but the room wouldn't cool down unless you did, although there was a small desk fan provided. I was hoping to see some ghosts, but I only managed to get a few room shots of some discs. Some people could say these are 'orbs' but I have an open mind. I took one shot and another straight after and the discs covered the room. This happened a few times on different days. The pub area is excellent and you really get the feel of the old place. The outside is nice too, and old looking, but the A30 isn't far behind the hotel. This doesn't spoil the feel when you're inside. The breakfast is probably the best I have had in any hotel I have stayed in. The buffet of hot food is very nice and I looked forward to it every morning we were there. All in all I would say this is somewhere where I will be staying again and can't wait to get back. read more

Lovely old historic pub. Very good real ale. Plenty of seating and car parking available. It is also a hotel. There is a Daphne Du Maurier museum here. It is believed that her book Jamaica Inn is based on a stay she made at this pub. Very interesting. read more
