The food is 3 stars but the setting is 5 stars, so 4 stars. After visiting the nearby Lydford Gorge and Waterfall, we were hungry and happened upon this cute-looking pub, and I think we made a good decision despite knowing nothing about it. It's hard to know if you can believe a sign that insists it is a "Character Pub", but this one does have legit character. It is clearly old and the decor doesn't seem to have changed in 30+ years, but it's really cute and English and I loved it. We sat in the beautiful back garden area for dinner, then moved inside for dessert when it started getting chilly, and we liked both spots. We were eating at a really weird time in the middle of the afternoon, so we practically had the whole place to ourselves, but we could tell it was going to get busy soon as several tables were reserved.
I had a broccoli and cauliflower bake, which came with veggies (over-steamed with absolutely no flavour added whatsoever) and potatoes (I got the new potatoes, and had to ask for butter - they came with absolutely no flavouring). The cheese bake itself was also pretty bland, but not terrible. I liked the cheesy garlic bread and chips my friend ordered better than my own meal. She also got a burger that she really enjoyed. For dessert, the bread and butter pudding and sticky toffee pudding were good, and super filling, but nothing super exciting. I just loved the ambiance of this place so much that I didn't much care. read more
