Utterly torn between three and four stars with this pub. It should have been a four-five without…read morequestion. But they really know how to let themselves down. The first night we tried to come here (there's only two pubs in the village, see) they were fully booked for dinner. We got kinda excited at that point (places are rarely quiet because they're bad, after all) so we booked in for Saturday instead and toddled off to the other pub for the evening. When we arrived the next day, they didn't seat us for a while, then didn't take our order for a good half an hour (we didn't have drinks either). There were only two duck dishes left so the waitress had to check I could have that like I'd asked. I didn't want to point out that there'd been more choice if anyone had served us. She didn't ask how I wanted my duck until she came back, and she didn't seem to know what sides came with each dish. As it was, the sides of dauphinoise potato and green beans were very tasty. Starters sounded great. As we were by the sea, we had to have scallops, right? But mine were a little sandy, and the waitress looked shocked when I told her. Not wonderfully thrilled. But here's the thing: The main courses were excellent. Really really excellent. And the pub is lovely. Cosy, noisy, happy. Everything you want from a country pub. It occurs to me that they're so busy because they have massively useless serving staff. And too many of them as well so no one really knows what's going on. I don't think my experience was a four star one. My meal (and wine) was. But I like the pub too much to rate them three stars. Still, they need some better serving staff here, because that's really letting down the excellent food.

There are two pubs in Lympstone Village, this is the quieter and slightly more average one…read more Although on the plus side, the staff here are attentive, although that might have been the actual problem. We were given a menu, which was apparently the wrong one, and after ordering plonked ourselves in the corner with a beer. Food arrived quickly, and it was tasty. Better than average pub food, nowhere near gastropub fare. My gammon egg and chips was fab, just what I wanted. Decent London Pride too (yes, I go all the way to Devon and buy a pint of London Pride, but like I say, it was an average pub). The boy's lasagne looked pretty tasty too, although I'm not sure why they dressed his salad with sweet chilli sauce. He didn't mind, he likes sweet chilli sauce. I think that's weird. But the evening was made pretty exhausting when literally every single person came to ask if everything was OK. Once is fine, but a couple of them even asked twice. And then they came to clear our plates about five times too. Even the chef came over. It was pretty frustrating by the end. I know they were being friendly, and just doing their job, but I don't want my meal interrupted ten times. Once will suffice. So, firm three stars from me. A good three stars though, you'd be just as comfy drinking a few pints.I can neither confirm nor deny that they'll ask you how that is seven times. But still, I'd rather smiles than frowns, especially in village pubs which can swing one way or the other. Not that you get much choice in this cute little village, mind. It's this place or the Swan up the road.

Been drinking in here since I moved back to Lympstone, the only pub in the village with atmosphere…read moreand character. Landlord and landlady Dave and Sheila, always make you feel welcome and the beer and food are always very good. So if you are looking for some good food, friendly people and some old world character the Globe is the pub to choose. Remember Lympstone is not particularly car friendly so use the big car-park signposted and walk, or better still have a leisurely stroll or cycle along the new cycle track from Exton or Exmouth and make the Globe your stop off point.
