The Anchor Inn at Cockwood most probably renound for it's vast array of flavoured mussles and the "Treacle Mine"(different flavours of treacle tart). Myself and my family (five in total, three children aged 14, 12 and 8years) went there for a meal whilst staying locally. We looked at the menu which was mainly fish and shellfish but meat was available and not a chicken nugget in sight which was good. The "specials board" also was only a selection of fish. I am terrible at going to certain restaurants and ordering what they are not famous for, like going into the countries best fish and chip shop and having a burger so this time at The Anchor I thought I would have what they do best and have fish. We started with Whitebait and crispy squid, the squid was exceptional but if Whitebait could look like roadkill this was it. Each one looked like a mallet had been taken to it and bashed within an inch of it's life and then finished off being drowned in breadcrumbs, what's wrong with lightly dusting in seasoned flour and frying. For main myself and my 8 year old chose haddock with prawns and garlic and herb butter with new potatoes and vegetables, well that is exactly what we got, no finesse what so ever. The fish was on par with supermarket value brand (incredibly thin, with skin on, if they had tried to take this off they would have obliterated it). It had a hard crust on the top, not from grilling or pan frying but more like "freezer burn". The prawns were cold and just dumped on the top and as for the vegetables, tasteless new potatoes and frozen not fresh green beans. My husband had steak which was ok but as long as it is cooked to your liking you can't really go wrong. My 14year old had pasta with tomato, garlic and herbs which was incredibly bitter and my 12year old had chicken wrapped in Parma ham stuffed with garlic and herb cheese, sounds lovely but not many people enjoy eating flobby, pale chicken skin which they had left on under the crispy Parma ham so you had to deconstruct it before eating. We all had desserts which were good and drinks consisted of 4 diet cokes and a pint of lager all for the bargain price of £121!!!!!!!(never again, very dissapointed with the food). read more
