I have a lot of good reasons to be positive about the Passage as it's my local and my parents firstmet there, but I don't really have anything good to say about it other than it is in a really lovely location
I don't know how it could be worse run!
The beers are badly looked after, limited, never change, crappy wines, crap top shelf, all served by disinterested, miserable staff. The menu looks really tempting but other than the fish and chips the rest of the food is badly cooked. I had the worst roast dinner I have ever been served in my life! Meat cooked to oblivion (the chef blamed the supplier) and roast potatoes that were black, burned and tasted of bitter, burnt vegetable oil. The yorkshire puddings were rubbery and the chef informed me he had prepared them fresh the day before. HAHA
I have also tried a full english breakfast. The bacon was nasty chunks of cheap off cuts and so salty it was inedible. The sausages were foamy, processed rubbish, the the eggs were burnt and the toast was the cheapest white bread available.
The staff are almost all miserable and uninterested in the customers, taking no interest in serving them, talking to them, clearing their tables etc. Even when I have complained they say nothing and don't come back, not even to take the plate away.
The landlord seems to spend his entire life upstairs playing on the computer.
It's such a shame that this potentially wonderful pub is so dreadfully neglected by a useless landlord and staff who seem to think it is a dreadful burden for anyone to venture in to ask for food or a drink, let alone any atmosphere.
I would recommend never to eat there or try a drink (definitely not an ale).
If you want to enjoy the view take your own picnic and walk 50 yards to sit on the benches at Underway (the steps by the church) for a much more pleasant experience. read more
