Must be nice to have no competition for fine dining because you are on an island. Unfortunately, a small menu does not guarantee an ability to execute excellent food. This came across as the type of meal you would have at your average catered wedding. Steak was bland, sauce broken, potato gratin too salty, asparagus served with woody bottoms. Half of the Mussels were unopened and smelled off, the pasta primavera tasted like raw wine mounted with butter and salt. Positives included roasted garlic bulb served with bread service, tasty ceviche preparation, good cocktails and wine list. We will likely not revisit. read more

The service was excellent, the drinks were well portioned and the prices where reasonable. In a tourist area it is easy to overpay for subpar food. This is not the case here. The food here was great. Our waitress was Lisa, and she was really nice and attentative when it came to making sure we had what we needed and if we needed anything else. Everything was great, though the hostess who greeted us didn't seem very welcoming. It looked like she was having an off day, but we still really enjoyed the rest of our experience. read more

My partner and I went to Winfield's for the first time to celebrate our anniversary, and we couldn't have been happier with the decision. Given the modern, upscale exterior, I was pleasantly surprised by the cozy interior, featuring dark wood ceilings and floors, as well as a great little bar. The food was excellent; I highly recommend the filet and the Winfield's salad. We will definitely be back for another nice night out on Block. read more

My rating solely based on the taste of food, regardless the restaurant's environment is ok , little loud, nice waitress... So let's talk about food. The appetizers scallops was soft & juicy, you should try. Lobster mac and cheese is decent. I had cod... The fish itself was fresh.. however.. what's wrong with the chef????? Whoever cook this dish totally screw up and taste like he/she had put 1 cup of salt making the sauce!!! If you have high blood pressure PLEASE don't order it! I feel sorry for my father in law he has high blood pressure and he ordered it too since the cod soaked in the sauce, it's EXTREMELY Salty!!! My tongue cannot taste everything else. I just end up drinking ice water and asking for extra bread to fill my stomach for the night since we arrived the island late and it's like 9ish pm. If you love the cod fish ..... And still want to come to eat ... I'd suggest you tell them forget about the sauce. Other dishes i will give 3 stars. **** Note: i told the manager who had long hair he ignored my feedbacks, lucky my waitress took my feedbacks seriously , the salt really making me sick and shaking .. i drank 4 glases water to flush it. The house salad is very good. The swordfish is a solid choice. The jerk chicken is just ok- a little under seasoned/sauced in my opinion.

We've had some very beautiful meals here-but the last couple of times-the meal was underwhelming. I ordered a "crab-crusted" cod. Although the piece of fish was fresh, cooked well, and tender-the "crust" was a greasy dense breading-that had no crab at all in it. It was also over-broiled and burnt on top. If I were the chef; I would have tossed it and re-fired it. The potatoes and vegetables that accompanied the dish-were an afterthought-not given any love or attention. My partner ordered the filet with au gratin potatoes. He was very happy with his dish. Our appetizers were decent. I had scallops, (white bean purée was ok) Bf had Caesar salad, which he liked. This place was so great first time we ate here, we've come here to eat every time we visit the island. After this last experience; I'm doubtful we'll be back. This restaurant seriously exceeded our expectations, great service, delicious food, and good atmosphere. Good for small parties or groups. Drinks: the cocktails are delicious, they also have beer and wine. For coffee at the end of dinner we ordered a cappuccino which was very good. Appetizers: we ordered the Winfield's salad which was delicious. My husband and i split a large salad and it was perfect. You can order a small or large. I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese from the appetizer section for dinner but you can totally get it as a appetizer or dinner. The portion is large and hearty, very good and copious amounts of larger lobster meat. Dinner: my husband ordered the pan seared salmon and the flavors and portion size was amazing. I was really impressed and blown away. Definitely recommend. TIP**** save your receipt and you can use it after to go over to Kitten's and this receipt excerpts you from paying the cover charge. The restaurant seemed rather dark - difficult to see the food. I ordered the half chicken and mashed potato dinner. I was enthusiastic when it was delivered - it looked very good. HOWEVER, I sliced into the chicken and - wait for it - BLOOD ran out of the meat into the potatoes. I was sickened by that. I don't even eat less than well done steaks. I waved down the waitress, who asked me: you would rather have it more well done? I was astonished and told her it isn't like a steak - it's chicken. You have to cook it completely to avoid illness! So she returned to the kitchen with it, returning a few minutes later with the same platter of food and here is what she said: the chef said that this is cooked, but sometimes near the bone it can appear red. And she was suggesting I eat it. I was almost speechless, but managed to say - I'm not eating that. I wanted to say CHEF should eat this meal! So, away I went after paying only for my salad and drink. I was nauseated after that event and had to find suitable food elsewhere. Bottom line, raw food, no apology - not even a visit from the manager on staff. I will not be recommending this restaurant or returning. Shame on them - read more

We have been going to BI for decades, but have never tried Winfield's before; we were very pleasantly surprised. This was late in the season, with an island labor shortage, but they had plenty of help and service was wonderful. We went with two friends, and everyone enjoyed their meals. Food was perfectly prepared and beautifully platted. Over all, one of the best dining experienced we had on this most recent trip. They bill themselves as a steakhouse, but their menu is more diverse than that. Although we did not hang out in the bar, it was a lot of fun, with great atmosphere and full of people, with a band playing. I would come back just for the bar! The only drawback of the place, and reason I never thought to go before, was that the windows are small, and there is no outdoor dining space, so you get none of the outdoor beauty of BI. The food was amazing, staff was very pleasant, but it was SO HOT. I was in a short, spaghetti strap dress, and I normally hate when AC is on high because I get cold easily, but would have welcomed being blasted with AC here. We are both fit people who don't overheat easily. There's no way we are the only ones who were hot. And there was a mini split about 6 feet away from us, yet not an ounce of cold air was coming out of it, so confused. We might try again but only for the roasted garlic that comes with the bread (even though they only give one roll per person haha). read more

As we were looking for dinner on our short stay on Block Island, we easily made reservations at Winfield's 24 hours in advance. Walking in our table was ready and waiting. Rebecca our server took care of us and also threw in some local knowledge as she is an islander. She was very attentive cleaning up everything as we were done with it. We started with the seared scallop appetizer, they were melt in your mouth good and then off to a side Caesar salad with an excellent dressing. My main course was the blackened shrimp very nicely cooked. I finished the evening with tres leche cake. It was a great dinner experience and I highly recommend making this a stop along your Block Island culinary adventure. read more

Visited June 12th. Wasn't thrilled walking in with limited menu but they had a short rib special that was awesome, which 3 of the 6 of us got. One of us said it was a bit smokey, but i did not find it such. The Salmon, pork chop and lobster m&c got raves. The bar room is dark but charming. The service very good. Although the steak came out overcooked, they were gracious enough to leave that plate on the table while they made us a new steak to temp. The rolls tasted like store bread. Not what you expect at a nice restaurant. Then the waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Our server never let us know what was going on or even noticed that our food did not come out. The table that came in after us got their meals, finished eating. Finally we asked, she said it is on its way. She went in the back, and came out and said she just 'fired' the order. She never put our food order into the kitchen! I asked how long? She said soon. Was very happy with our meal here the other night. There were 7 in our party and we all had compliments for everything we ordered. Some of us had a beef bourguignon special and gave it great reviews. I had seared scallops in a shallots, thyme, fennel, Granny Smith apple, burre blanc sauce, which were fantastic! My wife had the duck confit with potato salad, house pickles, and cider gastrique, and I thought that was also superb. They have a good selection of unusual cocktails, a large wine list, and beers. Service was good and all out dishes came out in a nicely coordinated way, all hot and nicely plated. This place is connected to yellow kitten but you wouldnt know that once you are inside. The decor is homey and cute. Service was very good and its only a short walk from old harbor. Not many nice restaurants on the island (more bar food type) but Winfields definitely outshines them all from where i have ate so far. Food - had salad and tenderloin with pimento cheese for apps. The salad was awesome and the tenderloin app pretty good Dinner - the table had swordfish, grilled shrimp, and grass fed tenderloin. All were excellent. The steak and swordfish was huge! If I had to rate the quality of service we received from Winfield's, I would place it lower than the experience I expect to have at a 50 year old family pizza place. Or a papa Gino's/McDonald's. Was seated and not approached for almost 20 minutes, forced to stare at the worst artwork I've ever seen in my life. The pictures on the wall appears to resemble bats drowning in the ocean. When we found out this was the chefs artwork we knew our experience had flushed down the toilet. I can give this restaurant one star, and that's because that's the number of glasses of water re received in our 30 minute quest for a waitress before our pride took over and we walked out. A really beautiful meal. Started with the bread with roasted garlic head and a nice olive oil and Parmesan. We had the grilled artichoke for an appetizer and I had the cod and my boyfriend the chicken. Both were incredibly well done and delicious. OK, but nothing special. We made a reservation for a milestone anniversary well in advance and were seated in the bar area. There were stained, dingy cloth dividers between the three tables in there. Rather gross and unappetizing. It was right where people came in to wait, so was quite noisy. The food is listed as French, but I didn't see anything French on the menu. I got a simple fish dish, my husband had chicken. We paid over $130 for our two meals with a glass of wine. The service was good, so was the food. But for the money, the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. We ate in the dining room several years ago, and were upset to be seated in the bar when we mentioned our special occasion on Open Table. I had lobster Mac and cheese last night at an expensive and sceney Manhattan steak house and just couldn't stop thinking how much better the Winfield's version was. The lobster really shines in the dish and is not overwhelmed by an overly creamy sauce. It was a standout dish and I think I rudely ate almost all of it (we were supposed to be sharing). My salmon was perfectly cooked and the sides with it were delicious and fresh tasting. The meal started with fresh yummy bread with a roasted garlic dip - incredibly welcome as we sat down totally starving from our trip. The service was excellent and they went out of their way to seat us promptly in an almost entirely full restaurant and bar. read more

Winfield's is now my second favorite restaurant on the Block...only behind Eli's. It's an older, more conservative crowd and the food is awesome. It's not cheap, but it's worth it. Seared scallops appetizer was fantastic. Mushroom ravioli was heavy and had a lot going on but was still good. I had a bit of the catfish as well which was amazing. One of the desserts on the specials list, apricot bread pudding, was quite good. Wine list by the glass is decent and not incredibly pricey. Service was quick but not rushed. All in all, Winfield's has established itself to be a staple of BI finer dining, primarily for their outstanding food and great service. There's no view and no outdoor seating, but you'll still enjoy your meal. read more

We had high expectations for this restaurant, as we wanted to come last time we visited the island. We made it this time, but unfortunately we were disappointed. We were seated in the lounge, which was fine (jazz ensemble playing). But the bottle of wine we chose was not available. They had a similar one, priced $20 more. Other restaurants will give you the replacement bottle at or near the cost of the first one, but not Winfield's. That was disappointing. Even worse, though, was that all of our entrees were lukewarm. The wine glasses also had a bit of a residue on them. We will not be back. read more

Every time my wife and I head to Block Island we make a reservation at Winfield's. This place has held the title, in our world, as our favorite restaurant in Block Island for years.
