This place is a hidden gem! We've been coming to Block Island for the past seven years and only just discovered The Barn. It ended up being the best meal of our trip! We made reservations for 5:30 pm, arrived a little early, and they seated us right away. We started with cocktails, and complimentary bread arrived shortly after. For appetizers, we ordered the brussel sprouts, octopus, and lamb lollipops. The brussel sprouts were my personal favorite, but everything was outstanding. For our entrées, we had the halibut, scallops, and bouillabaisse. The halibut was absolutely incredible and my favorite, though every dish was delicious and beautifully prepared. We finished with the key lime tart. It's on the smaller side, so if you're sharing with more than two people, I'd recommend ordering a couple of different desserts. We sat in the enclosed patio style dining room, which had large windows, gorgeous views, and lots of natural light. It felt like you were dining outside while still being indoors. They also have a more intimate indoor dining room with low lighting and a cozy ambiance. One of the coolest features is the open kitchen, where you can watch the chefs prepare food. Our waiter was fantastic! He was attentive, took the time to answer all of our questions, and even helped us narrow down our dinner choices when we couldn't decide. The bartenders also ignored people unless they were seated. It was very busy and for the amount of business they do, you would think they would treat the clientele a bit nicer. Although this rustic restaurant has earned a reputation of being one of the fanciest restaurants on the island, be prepared to spend A LOT of money on TINY portions! I appreciate that their food is "farm to table" fresh, but the portion sizes should match the prices. Our table of ten spent an average of $320 per couple, and three of the couples had split their dinners. We did order appetizers and drinks as well. I explained my food allergies to the waitress. She relayed the info to the kitchen and did her best to accommodate me. I ordered a small charcuterie without blue cheese. It came with Prosciutto, manchego cheese wedges, pitted olives, red grapes, a few crostini, and a drop of honey. For my entree, I ordered a filet mignon. It came with dollops of instant-like mashed potatoes and prosciutto wrapped asparagus. My friend ordered a filet as well but his was cooked more than the temp he ordered. Instead of medium, it came out well done... charred on the outside, no pink, and dry. Mine, on the other hand, was cooked perfectly even though mine was medium as well. Would I come back? Absolutely love this hidden special place. It has a speakeasy style feel and is intimate at the bar - maybe 8 seats. So cozy with outstanding bartenders that know how to make great craft cocktails. Brought the family to the spring house hotel for dinner and drinks out on the lawn sitting among the beautiful Adirondack chairs. Wonderful views, but not much to say positively beyond that. We ordered drinks and a number of shared plates (limited menu outside) for our family of six (including two under two years). We had dinner reservations inside, but thought we could keep the chaos of our young children outside on the lawn so that it wouldn't be shared by others. Promptly after ordering, we were served our drinks. Another forty five minutes passed without food, so we politely inquired to make sure we were not mistaken as to being served outside. The staff confirmed our order. Another half hour went by, but no food. At this point, we were approaching our two year olds bedtime. We again flagged down waitstaff and we're informed it should not be much longer. We waited until more than an hour and a half after placing our order (for small shared plates: buffalo cauliflower bites, sliders, etc) until we informed our waitress that we would need to cancel our food order. She went inside to check again and assured us the food "was ready and would be right out". If this were true then I would expect the food would be there after several Inquiries. Regardless, we said no thank you as we were past our allotted time. Things happen and it was a busy summer night. The more infuriating part was when the manager came out to speak to us. He said that he did not understand why we were cancelling our order that was ready. I was stunned at how brazen he was that he felt we were the ones being unreasonable. A simple apology or acknowledgment that they were busy and the kitchen was behind (or our order was misplaced) would have gone a long ways. Oh well. read more

I thought the food and service was VERY good but could be GREAT with a few adjustments. We were staying at the Spring House Hotel and just prior to the restaurant opened I visited the host to see if there was any availability and she kindly worked us in that evening and took me on a tour of the dining room as I had never been before. Main dining room was a bit toasty but the temp in the adjacent room was perfect. Garden greens salad was tasty, but slightly underdressed for our liking. Split the tomahawk with my husband and it was perfectly cooked. Friend dining with us found his salmon to be "okay" but a little dry. Server brought us a complimentary dessert to make up for that shortcoming. Service was nice but a bit slow... found a few times we needed something and nobody was to be found for a few minutes. As many other reviews note, this place is pricey. Def recommend reservations, this place was packed on a Wednesday just after labor day (off season). Will def be back to visit again. read more

Stumbled into The Barn on a Sunday evening...warm, cozy and cheery. Sat at the chef's counter in front of three chef's(?) watching them do their magic. Reviewing the menu, the Bouillabaisse seemed to call my name with some coaxing from the chef zone. Just wanted dinner-warm, cozy, done and delicious. So much so, reserved for our anniversary a few nights later. On to the night-weekday. Arrived to be graciously seated in what felt like tight quarters a room in the barn. It's a weeknight. Barn-made rolls arrive with a dish of roasted garlic bathed in olive oil. Menus arrive...extensive wine selection and quantity, but limited food selection + Specials + Sides. Steak options - filet mignon or tomahawk rib eye for three! The bride went with swordfish and the Pantanella Salad of heirloom tomatoes. When asked which of the heirloom tomatoes-brandywine, cherokee purple, green zebra, persimmon, speckled roman-to name a few; we were told - the red and the green ones. Regardless, it was delicious. A must have. Mr. Meathead loved the filet with fingerling potatoes, adding the roasted garlic sent it over the top. Add to that - our attentive server was an islander. The Springhouse dining on the patio was exquisite. We visited the restaurant during our stay in June, during the pandemic, and they had handled social distancing of tables and PPE on staff wonderfully. The patio was quiet upon our arrival, it's under a shaded white tent overlooking the ocean view and beautiful iron tables. They quickly filled up as it was dinner time and there was a wide array of patrons from families with little kids to couples. They are in the pricier side but it's the Springhouse so that shouldn't be a surprise. We ordered some appetizers and although they don't have a children's menu we did get a cheese pizza for my little one which she enjoyed. I had the little necks with clams and they were very good, in a white wine sauce. Although we didn't get dessert, they do bring out a dessert tray and let me just say, it doesn't disappoint. read more

My husband and I came here for a 7:45 pm reservation on a weekend. The views there are absolutely breathtaking and we came early to enjoy some cocktails and live music. The staff were all wearing masks, the host stand had plexiglass, and all of the tables were kept outside with a good amount of distance in between. Although we had to walk briefly inside to get to our dinner table, we felt fairly safe in our experience. As an appetizer, we shared the ahi tuna tartar. I ordered the swordfish and my husband had the fillet mignon. The food was good but considering the prices, we weren't blown away. In particular, the tuna tartar had a really heavy sauce and the steak was practically covered in peppercorns, losing some of the flavor of the actual food. Overall, I'd recommend coming here for some drinks and taking in the view, but for the high prices of the restaurant, the food isn't much to write home about. read more

Once again a fantastic dinner at the Barn. We had the brussels sprouts and the porterhouse. Excellent service and a great bottle of wine made it a perfect evening. This is our "Nice Dinner" place on the Island and it never disappoints. Most of the time on vacation I'm happy with quick and casual food with a local influence (e.g. seafood on an island) but when we come to the Barn we're looking for an excellent experience and that's what we always have. Our favorite place on the Island, relaxing and enjoyable! Review is based on dining/restaurant only . The lunch menu was small and basic however the food is delicious. The swordfish completely melts in your mouth, my only complaint is I wanted more....... The cocktail and wine selection are superb, plenty of varieties to order while dining or just enjoying the lawn service. I'm here now, writing this review from the front lawn. Hostesses are unbelievably rude, dismissive and need to check their attitudes. We came in to order drinks and appetizers after a day at the beach. When we kindly asked to be seated (at one of the numerous empty tables), the hostess told us to order drinks at the bar and then she would seat us at a table. We thought that was reasonable and ordered 4 expensive cocktails at the bar. We then asked once more to be seated, alas that was not to be. The hostesses refused to seat us, saying that we needed to order off the dinner menu in order to have a table on the veranda. The two hostesses, both 20-something women, were short in tone, never apologized for giving us the wrong information and didn't have the courtesy to point us to an alternative seating area (the lawn). We were later told by another young waitress that in fact, ordering appetizers from the dinner menu was completely sufficient to be seated at the table area we had requested. My three friends and I just came from the beach and we all get the sense they tried to dissuade us from sitting out front because we weren't dressed as fancy as some of the other patrons and are the only non-white patrons in the area. We had already bought $13 cocktails so we literally moved the lawn chairs around ourselves so we could sit together and enjoy our drinks. No one offered to help. We've now been sitting on the lawn chair area for at least 15 minutes and haven't had a single waitress approach us offering to serve us despite their constant attention to others seated literally right next to us. As mentioned above, we later asked another waitress who walked by about the veranda seating policy and she said the hostesses should have sat us at a table if we had purchased drinks and appetizers -- I'm not sure what their deal is, but different sets of rules for different patrons sounds like a losing business strategy. We are four young professional women living in Washington DC and have never felt as disrespected by restaurant staff as we did by the hostesses here. To be totally fair, the bartender was nice and the pina colada is good, but we won't be returning. read more

Food was large sized portions. Beautifully prepared and served. Staff was lovely and the rooms are warm and cozy and inviting. Local artists paintings on the wall. After having an epic fail at a nearby restaurant the previous night, the Spring House came to the rescue tonight! We had 8pm reservations and headed out early to have a cocktail. They have a wonderful lawn that you can sit & enjoy your cocktail, all with a beautiful view of the ocean. After enjoying cocktails (fantastically delicious) and the calamari app, we headed up to tell them we were ready to be seated. They took us all through the inside of the Inn, which is stunningly beautiful & all decorated handsomely. Then they walked us out to the patio...which had a breathtaking view of the lawn and the open ocean. We had a beautiful sea breeze on a hot summer night. And the specials...? Locally caught cod, Block Island swordfish, and filet mignon. We got the cod and the tuna. Both were perfectly season and a delight for the mouth. I highly recommend checking this place out! Make reservations beforehand, get dressed up, & come early for a cocktail. I recommend the grapefruit cocktail on their summer menu. One of the best meals I've had in decades! The ambience is incredibly unique and very non-traditional in comparison to all of BI's nautical motifs. You can actually see the three chefs cooking in the kitchen and pushing out some damn good food. We had: charcuterie board, scallop app, bouillabaisse (the best I've ever had...ever,) and hen (I think? I paid no attention to the hubs poultry but he said it was divine, so there you go!) I went to the Spring House this summer, during Covid, and had a wonderful experience! It was a great spot to grab lunch and drinks and look out over the water. We first went there for lunch and I got this delicious beet salad. The veggies were fresh and it was a filling meal. Later in the night we went back for cocktails on the Adirondack chairs over looking BI and the water. It was very peaceful there. I also found it very nice that you didn't have to be a guest at the hotel to enjoy the atmosphere there! read more

However, the beurre blanc, was not tight enough, nor was it seasoned. It was quite bland overall. There was 1/2 a plum tomato atop of my fish. It could've been cooked down, or blistered-but it was not. Just a bland chunk of tomato. We appreciated the fresh green beans and new potatoes from the garden.
