A Windmill hot dog, fries, and a soda is definitely a Jersey shore classic. However, the prices are a little steep (Dog/Fries/Soda about ten bucks), so you may want to bring a friend to share. Dropped by the windmill late last Saturday night because 1, its open, 2, i love hot-dogs, and 3, it looked interesting in general. Location was a little cramped, but got a ton of business. (As the few places open at that hour usually do.) Service speed was average considering the volume of customers and time of night, else a bit slow. The whole shtick here is their hot-dogs, which are admittedly above average but carry a very hefty price tag. Everything here carries a price premium, that's unjustified, outside of the hot-dogs the food is extremely average. The buns here are unimpressive, tasteless, and bland, especially when compared to the windmill hot-dogs, which are a nice custom made naturally sleeved dogs with some serious kick to them. Chili here has less than a quarter of the spice that the dogs do, and generic wiz of the most mundane kind is in use. Fries are crinkle cut, and little under done- judging by the taste fried in vegetable oil. Its not that Windmill is bad, its that its overpriced, and extremely average, with one thing that shines slightly above the pack, but isn't anything to write home about compared to other dog themed restaurants that it'd be rude to name drop here. Joe and Trayvon hold the windmill down. They work insane hours not Only to make money, But they also take pride in feeding the locals and out-of-towners. They make my son (5 yrs old) fell like a king when he goes In there. They remember his name, joke around with him, and even give him quarters for the vending machines. As they prepared my burger I saw this decrepit looking patty on the grill and thought, "good God that doesn't look very good!" To my utter surprise the burger actually tasted pretty freaking good. The food was as good as always... however i would not bring my kids there or recommending single females not wanting to get hit on going there either. Place certainly changed since I've been there as far as staffing goes... there was a family of 4 with 2 small children eating and the employees were rapping and cursing loudly and ignorantly like they were at a get together. Local "hangout" for neighborhood folks and fishermen from the Belmar Marina. The "famous" Windmill hot dog with the works was fresh, tasty and a little well done. Perfect. Order your French fries well done or they will be on the soggy side. Quick lunch spot when heading to Belmar. Don't expect any diet food on the menu here. Went to the windmill in belmar, the folks who work there have no courtesy towards customers and when they dont get the order correct, berate and mock the customer to their face. They are basically rude folks and its too bad because when the older woman was working there she was very respectful towards customers. The food is the same as always but the prices have gone up. Not the best hot dogs in New Jersey, but probably the best hot dogs on the shore. I was lucky to grow up a couple of minutes from Windmill and get my hot dog fix many, many times here. The dogs are cooked on a griddle and come blazing hot and crispy - the kind of hot dog that snaps when you bite into it. I know other hot dog joints get their hot dogs from brands such as Schickhaus, but I believe Windmill makes their own hot dogs for their restaurants. I also enjoy the fried mushrooms, cheese fries, and chicken tenders - all carry this indescribable yet recognizable Windmill taste to them that somehow makes them even better. The place isn't the nicest looking or the cleanest, but real NJ hot dog joints don't focus on the atmosphere - they focus on the food. The bottom line is, if you want a hot, snappy dog, this is the place to go around this area. read more

Terrible fast foods. Fishy flounder fish, everything deep fried is extra greasy and salty, and the patron dining behind us spotted a giant cockroach racing beneath our legs! We stopped in on the reference of a food lovin' co-worker who grew up going to Belmar beach for the summers. It also just looks like a cool place for a dog and a soda. The dogs (adult size) are really big, and taste like meat and you can order with cheeze and/or chili on top. The fixins are great: ketchup, mustard, onion, hot (temp.) kraut, pickels, relish, peppers and pepper relish. I may have overloaded my dog but that is OK. The fries are crinkle cut. My daughter dropped half of her kid size dog on the floor and they gave her a new one for free, that is really nice! This is a great way to end the day at the beach before you hit the road home. read more

Look, I just don't like hotdogs, okay? Not everyone loves encased meats. However, sometimes one half of a married couple would eat them every meal if he had the chance, so sometimes the other half of a married couple will agree to go to a divey NJ hotdog joint so that he can satisfy his cravings. That being said, I cannot give a fair review of the encased meats at Windmill aside from the fact that they are not rippers and I know many folks love their rippers. (If you're not familiar, this has nothing to do with tailwinds and everything to do with making hotdogs even more unhealthy: by frying them. There might be more to it than that, so don't quote me.) So, when I agree to go along on a hotdog outing, I am looking for something else to eat. Sadly, most hotdog places don't offer much in the way of salads or pastrami sandwiches or whatnot. A safe bet is usually to just be ridiculous and have chili cheese fries for my meal. Believe me, I've done this and not even regretted it too much. Jeff and I split that very thing at Windmill and I also got a chicken patty sandwich. (More on that in a second.) As for the chili cheese fries, they hit the spot perfectly. However! The few fries that I ate without any chili or cheese on them were pretty bland. So I recommend getting Windmill's fries with stuff on 'em. Now the chicken patty sandwich was perfection. I mean, as far as chicken patty sandwiches go it was perfection. It was piping hot and not at all greasy. The bun was squishy and not too big. It came with mayo and iceberg lettuce. Yum. The bad.....where to begin The worker-red headed dude was prob the rudest person I ever encountered working at a restaurant. It's unreal how he still has a job. There's a complete lack of communication between the workers & nobody knows which items go with which items or who they're going to. The red headed worker with the bun called said "what's good mang" trying to take my order when I came up, completely unprofessional. I ordered a chili cheese dog with chili on the side & cheese fries with cheese on the side. He then proceeded to say "cheese fries, chili dog cheese on the side" & I corrected him. Then he put cheese on my fries to go & when I asked for cheese on the side (which I had originally requested) they tried to charge me! I refused & I got soggy fries with no cheese on the side. Also the old lady at the grill was absolutely miserable & the cooks didn't change their gloves when switching between raw hot dogs & raw burgers, absolutely not ok! When I lived in NJ, I would go here every chance I could, even after the gym. Yes, I know eating Chili Cheese Fries destroys everything I just did working out, but I don't care. The best way i can describe this place is gourmet fast food. It is more expensive than a regular fast food joint, but man is it worth it. I recommend the californian cheeseburger and chili cheese fries. The burger is cooked over charcoal and with the hard roll, cheese and all the toppings you cant go wrong. Also, they are open until or 2am depending on location and time of year, which makes it an ideal stop on the way home from the bar, if you get what I mean. read more

Yeah, they use cheese wiz, whatever... the fries are super crisp and the fry to cheese ratio is perfect! The cheeseburgers are excellent too- a little small, but still delish! At the counter, there is a little condiment bar, with relish, pickles, some hot pepper relish, something else, and kraut, so you can garnish your food to your heart's content! The hot dogs are very long and have a nice snap, but they are a bit too salty for my taste. They have a bunch of other things you can order: fish san, cheese steak, rib eye san, veggie burger, etc., but if you love cheese fries, definitely stop in! read more

If I'm hungry and passing by The Windmill I always find myself pulling in and chomping down on a fully loaded hot dog as a snack. Though they are so large its probably more accurate to call it a second lunch. The place isn't cheap for fast food. Everytime I get a burger with the trimmings, fries, and a drink there is some sticker shock. But its cooked the way it should be (flamed grilled in plain view). Service is usually great. The windmill is a hot dog shop, so of course I got a cheeseburger. It was a perfect cookout-style burger, grilled, mayo, tomato and iceberg lettuce on a kaiser roll. I'd say it wasn't too different from a 5 Guys burger. The rest of the family were very happy with their hot dogs. The self-serve toppings included warmed sauerkraut and hot peppers. Yum. Felt like a hotdog for memorial day. Drove over to Belmar for a Windmill hotdog. The hotdog was very cooked on one side and uncooked on the other. Asked for mustard and never got it. Asked for a toasted roll and it was barely warm. Ordered onion rings and they were excellent but is was $4.99 for 8 rings. Ordered fries. Nice size portion but they were not cooked. I mean super cold in the middle. Fries and hotdog went into the trash. Very disappointing. The three young gentleman make me feel side they were doing us a service. Poir customer service. How many reviews do people need to post about the miserable service, and attitude received at the Belmar location? I called the main office, having been given a telephone number by someone in the Long Branch store. Apparently, no one there cares, as I left 2 messages and got no return call....thus this post; I ordered a double cheeseburger. When I entered the restaurant (dump) the girl behind the counter had a burned, charred bun sitting to the side of the grill. She made the cheeseburgers and put them on burned, cold bun. When I told not to give me that bun, she THREW the bun past me into a garbage can, and put burger onto an untoasted bun, as I have been eating at the Windmill since the 1960's, I know the buns are supposed toasted and warm. Apparently toasting another bun was was too much for her to do. Another customer who was watching this girls' attitude, to me said not to bother, that she was as rude and nasty to him as she had been to me. Take the other reviews underneath mine, and the fact that the hamburger was just ok, ask who is running this asylum, and run down the street for way better burgers and service! read more
