Smokeshack w/ Fries
Josh H.

Shake Shack is a fast food chain that specializes in burgers and frozen custard. They also have fried chicken, fries and hot dogs. This location can be found off of Garden State Parkway in the Monmouth Travel Plaza. It was no surprise that I wasn't impressed with this place. The food is mediocre and overpriced. I might try Shake Shack again in the future, but it will be at a different location. Smokeshack - 7.5 Fries - 7.3 Food - 7.4 Service - 7.3 Value - 6.4 Restaurant score - 70

Shake Shack @ Judy Blume Travel Plaza

I would like to praise Gavin. While waiting I observed the crew, how they move, act, ans serve. It was a long 4th of July weekend so how to be happy when working? Ask Gavin. He was very efficient, enthusiastic and hard working. I saw him moving quickly to serve next customer. More and beyond- this was his attitude. As the food is always excellent this time I would like to applause this hard working kid. Thank you! I hope u r appreciated and valued accordingly $$$. Thank you!

Delish! Can't wait to go back & order off the whole menu. The milkshakes are so good. Service was fast & the staff was nice. The best food I've seen in a rest area. Ambiance was nothing special.

This location is in the Judy Blume rest area on the GSP. I was starving and could not wait to get to the rest area so that I could chow down! This was my second visit there, so as expected, there were a lot of people waiting for their food. Ordering was really easy because they had a few touchscreens. While I waited for my food, I took the opportunity to use the restroom since I knew my order would take a little while. I took my food to go and then eat ate at tables they had outside. It was a beautiful day so I figured why not. The burger I had was really juicy, meaty and just plain delicious! My fries were crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Perfection! I grabbed a free cup of water for my drink. Didn't taste like tap, which was surprising. I definitely plan on returning to this shake shack when I am hungry and driving on the Garden State Parkway.

I completely adore this location. It is my half to my destination rest stop. Since opening the food is always fresh and hot. I never have a complaint with service. Everything is made to order and always very good. Even if the line is long the wait is fast paced. They did another upgrade so it's very clean and always being serviced by attendants.

This was my first time going to a shake shack at a rest stop but this was a great experience. Didn't feel any different from going to a stand alone location. The wait was just as long as I would wait at any other location but luckily the food also tasted as it did in any other location.

This place is located on the Garden State Parkway rest stop around exit 100. The lines are long. Their burgers are overrated (expensive) yet their fries are stellar, even better than McDonald's. The soft drinks are packed with ice. In general this place is too expensive for what you get....yes I would come here again if necessary. Staff is friendly.

a stainless steel counter top with two trays of ice cream

How is it possible to see 6 people working and not one person actually handing out the drinks? They just sit there...everyone moving at snail pace it's insane

Shake Shack has really taken on a life of its own. I remember when it was only in madison square park with a line forming around the park to eat there. Now they have a location in every town. Good for them. This time I went with the double cheeseburger and chicken bites. Both solid. The chicken bites tasted fresher than usual at this location but maybe they just got a new batch in or something. The burgers aren't greasy and the flavor of the patty is good. It tastes fresh and that is why Shake Shack has been so successful. The shakes are always spot on and a guilty pleasure of mine. Solid place but in the end it is fast food so 5 stars would be a stretch.

On a drive by back from the beach and wanted to get something to eat and decided to get shake shack. It's pretty okay just the portion is very small. They also don't sell chicken bites which is what I originally wanted. The service was nice tho can't complain about that :)

I ordered my food, and it came out in a very timely fashion. Everything was very delicious too. If you're in Wall or near Route 34, scope, this place out for sure. Great prices and good food.

Website: 5/5 It is easy to navigate, with many sections slowly coming to view as you scroll down the main page. It also had plenty of images of the food, enticing the viewer with utmost curiosity and craving. The menu items offer many selections with most of them having images representing them. Brand: 5/5 The entire aesthetic of SmokeHouse Grille relies on the appearance of an old-fashioned American grill. The interior especially evokes it, for the white-painted wooden walls, floors, and tables invite those looking for briskets. The pig is a recurring symbol throughout the establishment, since it represents the prevalence of briskets and pork products in the menu items. The staff mentioned that the SmokeHouse Grille's ideal first impressions would have an unassuming appearance, but surprise potential customers with their unusual food selection. Indeed, I can see how this could work for this establishment. Ambiance: 3/5 Despite having the appearance of a grill, there was definitely that eerie silence at some moments with no music playing over the radio. The benches where we sat did not feel readily fastened to the floor and I nearly fell off after adjusting myself a few times. The spaces between the tables definitely felt cramped. A silver-lining is that customers have an abundant option to eat outside where plenty of tables rest. Service: 5/5 The staff genuinely enjoyed her time working with the customers. Wait Time: 5/5 We experienced no delays waiting for our orders. Food: 5/5 I can say that pertaining to the Brand section, the hot dogs and the burgers definitely have unique twists to them. I expressed interest in the Mac Dog, which was essentially a course consisting of two hot dogs topped with macaroni and cheese with a side of French fries, with a side of peach tea. It had a well-cooked sausage and the mac-and-cheese topping solidified perfectly by maintaining heat while also not having a gooey intrusion upon my fingers. The buns held their form without disintegrating with every bite. The rich creaminess of the mac-and-cheese topping definitely complemented the spiciness of the hot dog sausage. Worth The Money?: 5/5 Although some of the menu items on the website did not have images, I nevertheless got a good idea of what to expect going in. If the SmokeHouse Grille found itself at some point when they could not make their food, they would default to Peruvian food, since the owner also owns the neighboring Perusa Peruvian Cuisine restaurant. I would be very interested to see traditional Peruvian foods with an American grill twist. I would also recommend giving the pig mascot a name. The relationship the SmokeHouse Grille has with the rest of the community is one that is based on the devotion of returning customers. Indeed, small businesses rely on this type of relationship and I would like to see it expand in the future. Pertaining to the unassuming appearance and unusual food, I can see how it could work, requiring a lot of word-of-mouth from returning customers. Also, if this unique aesthetic would work with music playing over the radio, then I would suggest classic rock along the lines of Chicago that appear old-fashioned in appearance, yet their songs have a variety of deep meanings. I will absolutely say that the food makes this establishment worth its price. The interior ambiance will not be a problem if you choose to eat outside. Rating: 5/5 Stars The average score rounded close to five out of five stars and I can definitely say that I have hope for the SmokeHouse Grille. Recommend To... Anyone enthralled to that unashamedly American brand of cheating food. American cuisine is rife with nutrient-negligent sludge packed with creamy, greasy flavor; might as well make it a part of you. I will not judge. I also recommend the SmokeHouse Grille to anyone who is either an extravert or knows someone who is, who will easily spread the word of this establishment to everyone they know.

Like nachos but they use kettle chips rather than tortilla chips. A baked Reuben dip (a special)--so cheesy and savory! A soft baked pretzel--perfect for sharing. Came with a spicy mustard! Then came the real Irish classics -- Irish sausage rolls--thick sausage wrapped in a pastry, a great comfort snack. Shepherds pie--a mix of ground beef and lamb. This was savory and perfect for a cold March day! Fish and chips--the BIGGEST fish ever and it was so light and battered well. And if you're a sandwich person, you have to try The Rail Bender which was a huge sandwich with mouthwatering beef brisket, and came with a savory au jus for dipping. For drinks, we went full Irish with their St. Paddy's day specials: Irish Lucky Charm, Irish Maid, and a Jameson Orange Creamsicle that tasted like dessert. The entrance stands out in this borough, despite its small size. I do think that sign with the wooden background reflected the cozy interior quite well with a homey style. The country décor on the walls also enhances the aesthetics. Website: 5/5 It wastes no time, for it immediately opens you to the menu where most of the items have their own images. I appreciated the minimalistic design where the understandable font provides you with the information. The basic description of the establishment does say that they rely on locally sourced ingredients. Ambiance: 5/5 Normally, dark interiors would not necessarily work for eateries unless they achieve a cozy vibe; which is what Harvest did perfectly. The wooden walls provide a sense of comfort underneath lights dim enough to not offend the eyes but bright enough to see. Despite the cramped space, I did think that the interior fitted the ambiance, along with the smooth country music playing over the radio. Service: 5/5 The staff was quite jovial and patiently explained a part of the menu. We had no issues with our orders. Wait Time: 5/5 I did wait awhile for the meals, though we managed to get our orders without any interruptions. Food: 4/5 I ordered the Grilled Chicken Thai Sandwich with no additional sides, with a free, complementary glass of water. It has ciabatta beard containing grilled chicken, spinach, cucumbers, and Thai sauce. I do not know if the signature sauce is authentically Thai, but I will say that I could barely tolerate the pungent taste and smell. I cannot say whether it is the feature. Every other part, such as the spinach and the cucumbers, definitely complemented the grilled chicken with a juicy taste. The ciabatta bread buns managed to hold their form, even as the contents started to fall off. Worth The Money?: 2/5 I will say that Harvest brand has as much of a highfalutin status as its prices. While the restaurant reflects the New American cuisine, it does not come off as condescending. Nevertheless, I still thought that the limited menu items just do not help with the prices. For the website, I would suggest a list of all the farms and independent distributors that Harvest relies on for ingredients, and to include a backstory about how Harvest began and where the name came from. I find local-sourcing incredibly important and commend Harvest for incorporating this into their business model. Concerning the food, I will say that the Grilled Chicken Thai sandwich did have suffice within the ambiance. The wait time it took to make the meal was appropriate enough. I will say that the wait time did feel long within the establishment, especially when no one else was around. Nevertheless, the service did make the food worth the wait and the ambiance worth immersing in. With all of this being said, would I say that the overall price would bring me back? Not really. Even the complementary water could not win me over when compared to the prices. Prestigious New American eateries tend to have a focus on specific consumer bases, and I am just not one of them. I do not score low on this part out of spite, rather based on my current station and many other people. I did tip the staff and I did have enough satisfaction with the meal. Rating: 4/5 Stars I do not know how Harvest would carry itself into the future, though I can see how it would suffice as a New American restaurant. Recommend To... Anyone with enough disposable income looking for a quiet restaurant.
