Windjammer was the place of my childhood fish & chips... when the store was on Cambie Street. When it closed the whole family was sad, but especially my dad, a true West Coast man. It re-opened on Main Street a couple years later and we found that the take-out wasn't as good and we didn't seem to go very often any more. Had this for the first time this evening via skip the dishes. Arrived really fast but less than mediocre meal. Found the tartar sauce really "meh". Very runny and not very tasty - like it was watered down. I got the butt end of a piece of lemon with almost nothing on it plus one really small piece. Not much attention to detail or this would not have been sent out. Fish was just okay. I had the Cod. Can't comment on the coleslaw (didn't try it) but the serving was really small. read more

This place was not good. First off, our server was not knowledgeable of the specials at all. At one point, he had to actually go outside to read what the advertised sign said. The fish tasted like it was previously frozen, and the fries were your typical run-of-the-mill frozen fries. To top off the end of the night, their debit/credit machine was not working properly, and the server kept taking the machine with the credit card to the back. I never order off the real menu, so I can't speak to the quality of those items, but the daily specials have always been exceptionally cheap and good. Eat in or take out service is usually prompt and friendly (though it does depend on who's working; the regular woman (owner?) is excellent, but others vary). This place used to be one of my favorite on Main Street. We have only visited 2 times since they moved to commercial drive. The first time was okey. Forgot our drinks, no ketchup for the fries, it was a busy day and the service was understandable. The 2nd time visit was terrible, and we will never go back ever again. There were only 2 tables when we walked in, seems like a very slow day, the cook was out on the counter chatting wth the staff. We sat down and ordered calamari and 2 sets of halibut n chips. While I was enjoying my favorite calamari, half way through, I found one hair, dark, curly hair mixed with my almost finished tartar sauce. I couldn't even start to think what kind and where the hair came from, and I've already down all the tartar sauce! I couldn't even try to start my fish n chips, and left the place. The server didn't say much and take the calamari off the bill, not even sincere about the issue. It was terrible feeling, I felt sick just thinking about it. I've been looking for a great fish n' chip place ever since Bud's closed down and I've finally found it. We ordered the halibut and chips and it was lovely, the fish fresh and chunky, the batter light and not greasy. The coleslaw was just the way I like it, Montreal deli style. The chips were crispy and I smothered them with malt vinegar and salt. An ice cold wheat beer went down well and we left quite satisfied vowing to come back soon. I visited this place several times when it was on Main St, always after a day out hiking (therefore hungry) and it was always good and satisfying and very good value too. I finally visited their new location on Commercial Drive and I now wonder if they were having an off night this time, or have they kind of gone downhill? I was eyeing the two pieces of Halibut with fries for $12; this was what I'd always ordered before and it had been a good amount of food. But the server said they had a special featuring 3 pieces (2 halibut and 1 salmon) on sale for $10. Well who could say no to that? I ordered that, and when it came the three pieces were tiny! Did they think chopping a given portion up into more "pieces" would make us think we were getting more food? My stomach knows the difference! It was very nicely cooked, and good fish, but after an active day it wasn't enough!! I'd rather pay more and feel satiated when I leave. I wonder if ordering the regular menu instead of the special would have meant more food? Or have they decreased their portion sizes in general? I know fish, and especially halibut, is expensive. So raise the price! Don't cut the portions! You know you're in trouble when you're still salivating over the plates you see being brought to other tables AFTER you've eaten yours. The guy was patient in taking my order, however, when it came to pick up the order, it was 10 minutes over the time that was quoted. It is a hole in the wall but not in the charming hole. This is our favourite "cheap and cheerful" spot in Vancouver. It's central location makes it the perfect meeting point to share a meal with friends. For my appetite, the portions are perfect. My husband, who is a big eater, has never complained. Best of all, they'll grill the fish and swap a salad for fries upon request. Their house salad, by the way, comes with a lovely light dressing -- it has lemon in it, I believe. And their drinks are very reasonably priced. I'm salivating thinking about it. read more

The Oyster Po Boy I ordered was absolutely to die for! Plump, juicy, satisfying oysters, fresh crisp, veggies and a side salad that came lightly tossed in a lovely lemony dressing . This was our first time at the Windjammer. We had a LivingSocial deal for three courses and we were not sure what to expect. We enjoyed our experience here. We started with the fish cakes (yum) and calamari (ok). We chose the cod fish and chips as our main and it was tasty. The apple pie and ice cream finished our dinner. We were very satisfied with the service, our waitress was always cheerful and pleasant. She was the only server but seemed to manage fine. Looks like take out is popular, too. Hmmm- lots of poor reviews here; I think this place is great and come here often. This is one of the best deals in town, you can usually get two pieces of cod with fries for 6-7 dollars and there are other specials also. I will say that the decor is lacking, and there have been one or two times that the food has been a bit overcooked, but it's usually very good, fresh, and the service is fine. I come here a couple of times a month, which is saying something in a city with so many good choices. EDIT- I need to add something, hoping that the owner see this. There is only ever one server on the floor, and at dinner time your customers wait a looong time for everything. The tables are not cleared, drinks take forever, and customers get pissed off. You have a great little place that could be much better if you would either pay for another server for three hours or come in yourself and help out. The server we had was fine, it's not her fault that you cannot schedule properly to cover your restaurant- serving ten or twelve tables plus takeout orders while also making drinks and clearing tables is too much for anyone to do. It's your fault for not realizing that investing in more labour will pay off in repeat customers. There are probably many people who won't come back because you are understaffed. I could hear her every word during the entire time I was there, including profanity directed at some other employee (who was out of earshot) and saying "freakin' this" and "freakin' that" while a table of a father and five young children sat three feet away from me. I was appalled. Then she was sitting at a table in the middle of the room, yakking with her friends (with her back to the door) eating chicken curry during DINNER HOUR instead of attending to her tables. Oh, and not washing her hands prior to serving her customers- just getting up from her food to serve. Ever heard of Food Safe?? She walked through the room several times WITHOUT even glancing at my table one time; kept sitting back down to eat and chat. When I finished my meal and drink, (the food is always good here BTW), I sat waiting for a LONG time for my bill, I even kept checking back over my shoulder to try and catch her eye. Finally, after the third time she sat back down to her meal, I called out to her to ask for my bill. When I addressed the issue of the service, she said "You're right, I was terrible to you." I left telling her that her service was abysmal. What people like her need to realize is that when you are working in a restaurant, it is NOT about you and your leisure time with your beer-drinking buddies, it's ALL about a relaxed, welcoming vibe for the paying guest. She was abrasive. I used to go here a lot, but I can guarantee that if I see this person again when I look inside, I'll keep right on walking. read more

The dinner special was $10 for 4 pc cod, great right? Not if you use groupon, you can only order 2 pc. The dessert was just silly. The apple pie was definitely cut in half instead of the regular portion. I would have thrown it back to the kitchen, only I had company with me so I didn't want to make a scene. Used to go to this location on Commercial Drive, and its been over a year since our last visit. Went for lunch at the Windjammer at least once a week. The last visit, it was a family lunch. I was looking forward to eating here. The Main Street location was a fave local spot. So, I made the venture out to The Drive. Most uncomfortable dining experience ever! Lazy waitress. She was too busy sitting and talking to check on tables. The waitress checking her phone is a definite sign. Group of people were sitting there with dirty plates in front of them. No offer of "Can I get you anything else?'" instead, "here's your bill".. The food was a let down. Soggy, burnt-looking fries and a piece of fish that should be on a kids menu somewhere. I thought one piece should be enough NOPE. I did notice the specials board outside but the waitress should've at least mentioned the specials. Ambiance, I wasn't expecting much but the guy watching some old ass TV show was too much!! What? Am I in your basement?? With a big sports weekend on, the TV could be set to TSN or something or shut off altogether. I could barely eat my food as the waitress was talking about pissing and puking.
