This place is so intense, I ran back into the restaurant to get their business card, cuz I knew I'd be yelping about it :-) OMG OMG wow wow wow, what a shining example of a little known secret in the middle of nowhere! It's in Buttonwillow. Seriously, did you know where Buttonwillow is? I never heard of it, could've been on another planet for all I knew, yet it's here in CA, which we discovered accidentally driving back from LA to SF. We needed to stop for a late lunch, but didn't want fast food--and I had a craving for BBQ. My husband found it listed in Apple Maps under "BBQ," after which we drove for an hour to get to it--and boy was it ever worth it. I would've driven another three hours, it was seriously that frikkin remarkable. First, the ambience is a blast from yesteryear, a cozy warm diner (think Happy Days era :-) with banquettes, regular tables, and booths, as well as a bar area. The 4 of us were seated immediately at a booth. Our waitress came over and took drink orders--iced teas for us all--basic and simple, fresh brewed with lemon wedges. We got a mixture of stuff and shared: the brisket sandwich, fish and chips, with sides of coleslaw and potato salad, a crunchy fresh delish pickle on the side. The fish spanking fresh, lightly battered and not a bit greasy, the fries soft interior and crunchy exterior. The brisket super tender with the perfect amount of fat, which I ate all of, not giving a crap about my cholesterol, juicy goodness, the BBQ sauce on the side to slather on top, the meat nestled in a crunchy yet soft forgiving roll. Hot damn the sauce was so yummy, I could've drank a vat of it--smoky and sweet, yet tangy, and just the tiniest barest bit of heat radiating off the tongue--the ratio of all dimensions perfectly balanced. Did I mention the texture of it? Not cloyingly heavy and not thin either, the perfect heft to hold up to meats, I scooped a bit with my finger and held it upside down, it would not run down--they mean serious business, these folks are on the beat and gives Memphis a run for their money. Do they sell this sauce? If not, listen up: you should bottle it, make a mint, and retire. The potato salad, geez, if I'd had a cooler I'd have brought some back. It was not sloppy with mayo, not runny and lazy, with mashed up potatoes swimming in it. No. This was the real deal: serious chunks of boiled or steamed potatoes, softly folded into a tangy mix, preserving the integrity of the ingredients. I loved it so much, I asked my sister-in-law if she could make it for me exactly as they did! And the coleslaw, crunchy shredded cabbage, not so finely chopped such that you didn't know what you were eating, good sized vegetable mixed into a tangy dressing of some sort--finished the whole thing. The half pickle was a terrific accompaniment to the brisket sandwich, with the robust flavors of the brisket and sauce, the tangy crunchy pickle a welcome respite. Of course, we all clamored for pies: I got the lemon meringue, which was as perfect as any ever I've had. The crust crumbly and buttery but not too heavy, the lemon filling was not the dreaded curd, but an actual lemony starchy consistency with the viscosity you look for in this pie, the meringue part piled high on top, with a caramelized swirl on top. I had to force myself to give others bites of it, and literally had discipline to not order another slice :-) My husband got the pecan pie, and polished it off in one fell swoop--the nuts fresh and crunchy but gooey at the bottom layer with a solid crunch that could hold the heavy toppings. My brother had the banana cream, which was respectable, not cloyingly sweet and tasting of fresh bananas folded in a cream base. What I loved about it was that it was not swimming in fake cream. My sister in law got one of their berry pies, an example of straightforward crust and fresh berry filling--love. The service was almost family-like, super warm and friendly, prompt and efficient, very attentive, and oh so patient, e.g. I went back and forth a few times on my order because everything looked so tempting. I ordered my pie first (before my sandwich), and it actually arrived first, so they're on the ball. The prices are more than fair and reasonable given the quality of the food, the pristine ingredients and impeccable cooking technique. This place seems to be a local hangout for the community, a dozen or so high school football players streaming in and out. Here's the thing: I kinda wish I lived here just so I could eat here regularly :-) read more
