Best BBQ in town. Springfield is really fortunate the two party tag team of Willie Mae's BBQ are there to service the community. Smoke - seriously Smokey - just short of reaching for a fire extinguisher lol. You, you close, and your top lip will carry that lingering Smokey aroma around. Their portions are hearty and they produce a consistent product. They have a good thing going. My only complaint would be there sides sides didn't get as much love as their BBQ. I really hate to write this review, but people need to know. The food unfortunately is only a shell of what it was years back when it was the amazing Willie Mae's. The only thing I can think of is that new ownership has taken some shortcuts with the barbecue recipe because it's no longer amazing. When they reopened they were using the new smoker also and the barbecue was spot on. Little by little it has degraded into average to bad barbecue. Can't blame the smoker. No more deep smoke, no more smoke ring in the brisket. I do appreciate the generous portions, but this place is no longer worth it as a destination restaurant to visit. I find it interesting that they advertise it relentlessly like it's the same and the public should be so excited about it but the quality just isn't there anymore. And Willie Mae's management, please quit trying to guilt the public on social media into keeping the place full when you haven't kept the food quality up to what it was. If enough people comment, maybe they will bring it back but at least I can still remember how great it was when it was great. And now I get to save on gas money to not drive up there anymore. I had high expectations for this place after seeing the restaurant on TN Crossroads. I ordered the Combo with brisket, ribs, and sausage. The ribs were awesome some of the best I have ever had. Good smokey flavor and very tender. The sausage, well I have had way better, just a very bland. The brisket was some of the worst I have eaten. No smoke ring very fatty, it's like they cut off the smoke ring leaving it with no flavor at all. The sides, potato salad and coleslaw were alright. I think that the disappointment of the brisket would not allow me to enjoy the sides. If I ever go back, it will be for the ribs and in order to get brisket, I'm going to want to see it first. read more

Had the Brisket sandwich and baked beans. The brisket was so tender and flavorful! They have 4 different BBQ sauces at the table which were good. The baked beans were flavorful and you can tell these guys put care into their cooking. Service was friendly and the place was clean. I'd come back here if I was passing through. What a find!! The folks running the restaurant are absolute gems, out and about talking to customers and checking in. The decor is exactly what I hoped it would be, and reminded me of all my favorite bbq establishments. I would love to see someone pickin up on the stage in the corner sometime too! The food is blow you away good. Perfect crust on the brisket, incredibly juicy, cooked perfectly. The sides were spot on, the cornbread was great, and I enjoyed trying a few of their many sauces! I wish I would have taken a picture, but I just dug right in. We were looking for authentic bbq and Willie Mae's did not disappoint! I had brisket with mac n cheese and cornbread and my fiancé had smoked sausage with potato salad and cornbread. Everything was delicious! I am still smelling the hickory smoke as we head back to Chicago. They were already out of ribs by the time we arrived. They only cook so much so get there early. Pulled Pork, Sliced Beef Brisket, Greens and Slaw! OK, so we've been through this before.... I love, crave, seek and delight in BBQ whenever and wherever I have the chance. There's ALWAYS room for BBQ in my stomach, especially when it comes to Willie Mae's When I was first introduced, (I have to be honest) I was a bit skeptical. After being advised to leave my leather jacket in the car due to the overwhelming bath of hickory, I braved the smell....and oh was it a great one! The smell in this joint made we want to start my own backyard campfire. Onto the Q... As Willie Mae's does not offer a 2-meat platter, I had to opt for two 1lb orders of meat. Ummmm......twist my arm! And the photo above shows both the Pulled Pork and Sliced Beef Brisket with Green Beans and Slaw. The Pulled Pork was great, very tender, very juicy and didn't skip a beat; truthfully, it held it's own up to KC and Memphis. Now, the Brisket is a different story! As I've consumed mass amounts of BBQ over the years, I was delighted to share with the owners that Willie Mae's has the BEST BRISKET, EVER!!! Between the juiciness, the smokiness and the tenderness, it's absolute melt-in-your-mouth party. Once you add in a bit of their spicy BBQ sauce, you'll see heaven! The ambiance is great as this joint offers that old-school, small-town atmosphere. It's extremely clean and yes, it is full of a smokiness in the air. This place is phenomenal. You walk in and it's always busy, always smells good (you carry the smell back with you the rest of the day ). Their brisket is out of this world. They are a two man team. Yankee lost outside of Nashville... What a fantastic place. Come in the door, and the beautiful smell of smoked barbecue tells the story of the food quality. Had the turkey plate with green beans. Wow, brisket and pulled pork in my top three all time. Brisket was moist and tasty with right amount of fat. Pulled pork was crispy on edge and delicious. Only two dishes I tried. Side of beans was also amazing. They were sweet and meaty! It's an hours drive for me but I'll be making it again to taste some more deliciousness. Staying in Nashville for vaca and hitting some small towns outside of Nashville. We found Willie Mae's. Incredible find!! I had the beef brisket with Mac and cheese and coleslaw. My wife had the pork ribs with Cole slaw and potato salad. Let me just say our meals were Awesome. Incredible smoked flavor in the meats and simply one of the best BBQ places we have ever tried. We have tried numerous places but Willie Maes is worth a trip from Nashville. Already thinking about returning later this weekend!! It's worth it! read more

Atmosphere is casual and roomy. Very appropriate for a barbecue restaurant. We arrived early, a little after 11AM. They filled up quickly. We had the brisket and rib plates. We are self admitted barbecue snobs and go out of our way for good food. We got off of I-24 while traveling to eat here. They did not disappoint. Brisket- Excellent. Tender and juicy, good portion, good smoke.The bark was really good with a dab of the 'hot sweet sauce. Ribs- Excellent. Pulled off the bone perfectly and tender. Really nice bark with a hint of brown sugar(?). Sides were above average. Beans were a little sweet and slaw had a nice vinegar finish. Sauces were top notch as well. 'Sweet with Heat' was my favorite. Enough choices to satisfy anyone. Overall, very well executed barbecue. read more

By a wide margin, some of the beat BBQ I've had in quite a while! The pork was tender and juicy. The outside bark was excellent. All of the sauces I tried were wonderful. The mac-n-cheese and baked beans were delicious. Nothing in this restaurant was even mediocre. The sweet tea was not overly sweet! I will be back! What a great little find! read more

Smoky smoking ribs. Man, oh man the ribs here are dry rubbed and still fall off the bone and taste so moist and flavorful. PS, you really do not need sauce, but do try out their bbq and hot sauce for a nice kick of flavor. Brisket plate was delicious and had a nice fat to meat ratio. The mac n cheese missed a bit of a flavor punch, as did the potato salad. However, the ribs and brisket are definitely winners for the town of Springfield. Be warned, things sell out so I would recommend dining in early, or call ahead of time. Once items are sold out, they close down for the day. For about $22 I got the brisket plate with two sides and half a slab of ribs, now that is an amazing price! read more
