I used to live with Wild Ginger practically in my backyard and got spoiled by the convenience of carryout sushi so close at hand. I've always said, any restaurant that tries to serve multiple types of Asian cuisine is likely to suck at all of them. Wild Ginger didn't prove me wrong. I stuck with Thai cuisine on this visit. The Tom Ka Gai soup was thick and creamy - which is very strange. The carrots in the Pad See Ew were overcooked, tasting more like what you eat in an American pot roast. Good solid food, good, solid service. Not outstanding but never been disappointed, either. I would call them "pan-asian" as they have offerings from most of the larger or more popular asian cuisines- Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese. Thai is the strongest, I believe and I tend to stick with that. But recently I was in the restaurant with a friend and she ordered Chinese- the Orange chicken. It may have been the most beautiful plate I have ever seen - just gorgeously presented. It made you want to dive in! Kudos to the chef on that! I still heartily enjoyed my drunken noodles but I couldn't take my eyes off that plate of Orange chicken! My first visit here, with a friend who had been before. I remember the various establishments this spots has been, and I was surprised at how intimate it felt. Comfortable feel, nice decor. Our server was excellent. She helped us pick some drinks from the specialty drink menu as it was happy hour and the drinks were half price. I had a sake-tini, which was very nice with a taste of cucumber. Refreshing. My companion had the wild ginger-tini, which sounded to me like it could be too sweet with coconut, but it was nicely balanced. Not a sushi fan, I stuck with a stir-fry. I chose Mango stir-fry with chicken, at a 6 our of 10 spiciness. The sweet chili sauce was a tad too sweet and not enough chili for me, but out server brough some hot sauce upon request. It was very nice. My friend chose the Spicy stir fry I can't remember the name, with tofu. It was quite good, spiced at 7, but she needed extra spicy too. First, love the decor. Colorful and subtle, with woody earth tones, this is a wonderful place with wonderful food. I haven't eaten off the hibachi, but the rest is great. Sushi: fun, artfully presented and delicious. I love their edamame as an appetizer too. They have plenty of vegetarian options for me too (I eat fish). Their noodles are tasty with lots of yummy vegetables. My whole family loves it there, and they dont all get sushi either. I would go very often because I have very good memories of their food. I am a big fan of this type of cuisine and must say last night was a very bad experience. I have eaten here in the past and it has always been pretty good. Although this time the sushi was bland and tasted like it wasnt fresh. The server didnt bring out the soy sauce that we requested until about half way through our sushi. I also ordered some shrimp shumai and it seemed like the shrimp had gone bad as well. I am incredibly disappointed and pray that this was a one time occurance, but I will never go back in fear of getting sick. Not once did the waiter ask if our food was good and when she noticed that we ate about 1/8 of what was brought to us wasnt eaten, she still didnt ask or offer up anything. read more

Just had dinner here with my girlfriend. She needed a "win" after a Saint Patricks day gone awry. We did some classic overeating this time. We started out with the steamed shrimp shumai, edamame, and the baked mussels. A lot of places will deep fry their shumai, but i think shumai is better steamed and is a slightly healthier option. The baked mussels were prepared with jalapeño and spicy mayo, they were also delicious. We moved on to the boat for two. Their sushi was fantastic. Its some of the freshest sushi I have had in CIncinnati. The miso soup was a little bland. I would suggest the salad in place of the soup. After eating everything we were both stuffed. I then ordered the fried cheesecake with ice-cream. This dessert is the biggest reason I'm writing this review. It has a surprisingly light flavor. Chocolate sauce and caramel sauce was drizzled over a healthy scoop of vanilla ice-cream, whipped cream and 4 slices of the deep fried cheesecake. We were both blown away by this dessert. I was happy to try this restaurant because I love Thai food and we have very few memorable ethnic restaurants in Cincinnati. The sauces were very watery with overcooked chicken and salmon curries. Vegetables did not seem fresh either. When we complained, the waiter smiled. When I really complained, waiter said there was no manager available. Maybe we should have stuck to sushi or stir fry. most disgusting lunch ever! I sent food back and it took forever to get it back. The manager was rude, making excuses for why it came the way it came without any apologies. When I got it back it was so disgusting that I could not even stomach eating it. Nobody checked back us to see if it was even okay! I didn't eat it at all! They came by and took my plate and charged me for food I wouldn't feed my dog! DISGUSTING!!! I will never eat here again!!! They don't even deserve the one star I gave them!!! But, I have to say that the food I received from the hibachi grill at Wild Ginger was so bad that I feel compelled to warn people about it. We spent over $100 for two with tip for undercooked vegetables, a large piece of egg shell in our fried rice and chicken that tasted like rubber from one of those south beach diet lunch boxes. It had no chicken flavor whatsoever. I should mention that our server was great. So they have that going for them. If you go to here, make sure you stick to the sushi or main menu. read more

Mango curry was okay -- probably a lot better with shrimp (I had it with chicken) Cons: Bo luc lac was terrible -- it's a Vietnamese dish and the way Wild Ginger prepared it was completely wrong. The beef wasn't cubed, the spices and flavor weren't there -- it was not a memorable dish. It was just bland, sauteed beef. The pad thai was also mediocre -- they used the wrong noodles, the flavors weren't bold. I don't think I'd come here again. I gave a four because I liked the food. It was very good. I also generally get take-out, so keep that in mind in my review. I have yet to eat at the restaurant, but the atmosphere was very nice. As far as a date restaurant, I would recommend all of the Thai restaurants in Hyde Park, but this one was more "upscale". Take that as you will; I do not mean that comment in the slightest bit to mean the other restaurants in the area are not good date restaurants, because they are. The atmospheres are just much different. This is more "Hyde Park Squareish" compared to being "Mt. Lookout Squareish". I hope that makes sense. My only complaint is that I ordered a 10 on both the Pad Thai and their Fried Rice. To me it was like a 3. I love spice and I love Thai. If you are looking for spice, go to Green Papaya. I hated this place. I wanted to try Thai food for the first time and my phone's GPS took me here. No parking in the small back lot. Seating was very close and crowded which just ruined my experience cuz I hate sitting with strangers when I'm eating. My husband was staring at the slutty little hostess. I asked the waitress to help me pick out what to eat because I wanted Thai food and the whole menu was all sushi and seafood! So I really just wanted to pick up and leave at that point but my husband was too embarrassed to so I had to stay. Anyways, the waitress was stupid and couldn't suggest anything. There were no prices on the menu which made me hesitant to order stuff. I ended up ordering orange chicken which is just chinese food so the whole thai food idea was gone which defeated the purpose of even going to this place. My husband ordered yellow curry chicken stuff level 6. It was basically a yellow bowl of soup with some chicken pieces and potato. We had to share a small bowl of rice. No flavor, no spice, small portions. When we got the check it was $35 which isnt too high but for what we ordered it was not worth it. We left hungry and pissed. McDonalds drive thru :) Don't go here. It's bad quality. Bad service. I'm gonna look through yelp for a thai place to try. read more

In they Hyde park Mount Lookout area there seems to be an epidemic of sushi is sushi is sushi. This is also prevalent in the burbs. It is disturbing when a Thai restaurant can make sushi as well as a japanese restaurant. It is also disturbing when Chinese people work at the sushi counter of a japanese restaurant, koreans make sushi at a thai place, and hispanics make the sushi at wild ginger. If I was in any city but Cincinnati this would confuse me, however in Cincinnati it appears the sushi eating public tends to be 20-30 year old Caucasians that tend to stay in the midwest and never leave. This leads to an interesting phenomenon in which as long as someone looks asian they can open an asian restaurant and make pan asian dishes. It blows my mind. All this being said, the specialty sushi at wild ginger is much better than that at other restaurants. Its more creative and flavorful. They probably suffer a bit because they don't do the half off sushi but it is worth that little extra. When I go, I usually order their version of pho. It is pretty decent as a noodle dish, I just wish they wouldn't call it pho. This is mostly because this dish is NOTHING like real pho. If they let it stand on its own feet as some crazy concoction made by someone to imitate a traditional asian dish for white people it would do just fine. Just don't go in expecting pho and you'll be happy. Why do I make such a big deal? Well most importantly they use the wrong kind of noodles. They may look kind of like pho noodles, but they aren't. Not sure who is suppling their noodles but I have a feeling they get just generic noodles that can be put in multiple dishes. Second the meat in the pho is the wrong cuts of beef, don't contain any of the beef balls, and have a surprising lack of vegetables. Oh you get the dish of fresh veggies to put in like any other respectable Asian restaurant, but their is a surprising lack of anything else in the soup. All in all, go for the pho, but don't expect to get real pho and you'll be ok. Oh and order some sushi while your at it. Its good, not great, but better than the competition. read more

She said the new lady didn't know it was included since I ordered from the lunch menu. They refused to refund my money. This review is just for the sushi. And I should mention...this is my first sushi experience in Cincinnati. And I might be spoiled by the plethora of options in the bay area. But this place for the price was just ok. It was cool that all of the pieces were cut into more or less bite sized pieces. Some places have like giant sized pieces that you attempt to shove into your mouth rather than the bite in half approach and then you're stuck not talking to anyone for at least a minute and your main concern is not to spew rice out of your mouth rather than actually tasting the fish. I got the seaweed salad. Pretty standard stuff...and they give you a decent sized portion for five bucks but only because they threw it on top of some shaved daikon. I like the extra crunch =) I also got the red roll and the orange dragon. The fish isn't super fantasticly fresh and perfect but it's not overly fishy either. The only real samples I got were the tuna on top of the red roll and the salmon on top of the orange roll. I think I'd need to try to the nigiri or sashimi to really give an accurate assessment. Overall, the rolls were rolled pretty well and it's decent, a-ok sushi. The restaurant seemed like a nicer spot with dim lighting and mainly accented in red I think which is pretty typical of Japanese places. I'm not sure about the mix of Thai and Vietnamese...seems weird not to just specialize in one thing but maybe there's not much of these types of cuisines in Cincinnati? What do I know...I've got five of each type within three miles of my house...guess I'm just spoiled =) read more

We've eaten here 4 or 5 times over the last year, and it's always been pretty good, standard Thai and sushi. We ate there last night and it was just terrible. We ordered 2 items with shrimp -- the summer rolls, and the shrimp tempura roll -- and both were made with the fake crab stuff that is typically used in California rolls (flavorless whitefish) instead of shrimp. Totally weird that they would do that, and tasted awful. If you're out of shrimp, just say so. read more

The best part about this place is the ambiance, unfortunately. The place has a modern feel with nice lighting and earth toned rooms. Ordered the Basil Duck and Drunken Noodles. The Duck was overly salty and missing any real basil flavor. The drunken noodles were okay, but really seemed be be lacking any developed flavors as well. It was more oily than anything. I wouldn't recommend this place solely for the food, but it might be a good place to take a date. read more

Absolutely the worst Hibachi food I have ever eaten. I have been to over 100 Japanese Hibachi restaurants in my life in over 15-18 states and by far this is the worst. Yum Yum sauce has not taste and looks like rice pudding. I had a bottle of Apple Sake and 4 of us ate for roughly $235.00 with 2 sushi rolls. I don't care about $$$$ as much as good food. I have never yelped before, but the experience with this restaurant was so bad that I joined 'yelp' just to be able to share with others. The attitude and customer service of this restaurant was so unfriendly and non-customer oriented that I had to write a review: We have visited or ordered take-out food from Wild Ginger perhaps once a quarter. I really liked the contemporary atmosphere there, especially since they added the bar area. Last week I picked up take out food from there. No raw fish, just appetizers and soups. That evening, just half an hour after the dinner, both my husband and I got sick to the stomach. Not bad, but half the night was wasted. We were ok the next day. I did feel however the need to call them to give them the feedback. Feedback is a gift, right? I asked for the manager and the first thing he asks is if we have seen a doctor. I said no, we did not need to. He said he could not do anything if we had not seen the doctor. I told him how disappointed I was by his reaction. I would have expected him to apologize first, then say that this is the first time a customers calls with this feedback and that he hopes we come back, etc. Even this very direct feedback did not bother him - apart from a lame apology that came too late. So I hung up, feeling frustrated and somehow mistreated. So for us, a NO-GO for going back. read more

Just tried Wild Ginger for the first time last night. The sushi was fresh, the yellow curry was delicious, their heat scale seems to lean towards the mild side so don't be afraid to up the number, a 6 gives you a little pleasant heat in the back of your throat, but you have to go higher if you like real heat. The seafood in the Shitake Seafood was cooked perfectly, and you can get a proper cocktail here, heavy on the booze, I suggest the thai basil martini easy on the simple syrup.
