At Washington Rd they wouldn't even acknowledge us in the drive thru-- a simple "One moment please " would have been fine, but we didn't even get that. My food was great. Some of the employees were struggling today. The young girl who helped me was fantastic. However I came to get a to-go box. I asked. No one acknowledged me. I asked again. Someone whom I can only guess is a manager was counting money or something. She reached out her left hand and snapped her fingers at her employees without looking up. It was very disrespectful. I kept quiet out of respect for the people I was with and not to embarrass her employees any more than she already did. The young girl who helped me saw my face and frankly looked nervous. I then tried to get a tea refill to go. Empty. They pulled a jug out from under the counter in a fridge and told me to get what I wanted. Ok then. Eye contact would have been helpful. The other night I visited this place just from googling soul food. I must say that the food did not disappoint. I walked in the door, 3 young ladies greeted me with a smile. I asked the young lady who took my order what would she recommend. She responded the chicken tenders are great and the Mac and cheese. I asked for the fried okra to go with it. As you can see in the picture I posted, the food looks delicious. Not only did it look but she was definitely on point with the recommendation. The Okra was crispy and not fried too hard. The Mac and cheese was really creamy and wasn't overwhelmed by the cheese. The chicken was season, crunchy on the outside but juice inside. I definitely recommend you going to check out this spot. The girl at the drive thru had zero personality- literally was working harder to frown then anything else. We waited for 20 + minutes for our food. When she finally brought us food it wasn't our and we told her that. She said nothing walked back to the kitchen and came back with the same bag of food and said 'yep, this is yours' we showed her the receipt. She walked back To the kitchen returned with nothing said 'give me the receipt' then brought us the correct food that she had sitting on the counter for about 15 minutes. I honestly don't understand what is happening to this place. It's like they don't even want you there. For years it was really good and the service was good. This afternoon has made me finally give up on going here anymore. For one, the past three or four times, the person at the drive thru basically sounded like he couldn't stand our existence and tried to rush us through each second of our order, regardless of accuracy. We ordered a six piece chicken strip meal, a sweet tea, and wanted double fries with extra honey mustard. I said that. I was interrupted with "And what to drink? And what side? And what other side? What did you say to drink again?" at every breath I took as I repeated my order. Like, chill dude. I'm saying everything you need me to say again. Like if you'd just take a second and stop audibly sighing in frustration you'd hear my order and be able to take it once. TWENTYFIVE MINUTES LATER we finally got to the window. As you know three cars in front of you is just so many cars (sarcasm). The lady as the window was screaming "NOW!!" at the other employees, and again, acted as if our very existence was the worst thing in the world, just like the guy who took our order. They both seemed like a joy to work with. Remember when I said extra honey mustard? Yeah, none in the bag at all. We're done. There's a million places to eat in Augusta. Customer service and general courtesy will make or break you in this town. You'll fall slow, but you will fall. You have the business now but keep treating customers like you don't want them there and they won't be there anymore. Well, except maybe The Masters. But there is a connection there, as these guys made the pimento cheese for ages (I find out after I ate there this past September for lunch). We were driving through on our way to Charleston and decided to ask Augusta native Andria C to ask here where to eat - she gave us lots of ideas, but this hit the jackpot when Tanya C read off the menu to me. I opted for fried chicken as it is a staple at WS. This is something that made me crazy happy as most places, when offering a 2-piece, offer a breast and a wing, but WS lets you get 2 breasts. I like to save my wings for when I want hot wings. Fried chicken it is all about the chicken breasts. For my sides, I opted for mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra and hushpuppies. I added a biscuit since I cannot turn down a biscuit, ever. Also, I ordered an unsweet iced tea - drinks are self-serve and they just hand you a cup. The food was ready so very fast. Thank goodness, as I was starved and the smells wafting at you when you walked in the door...my lawd. I happened to pick a table under a picture of my golf idol, Arnold Palmer (who passed just over a week later). The chicken was perfectly crunchy on the outside, moist and juicy on the inside and full of flavor. The mashed potatoes were pretty good with the standard brown gravy - nothing to write home about. The fried okra was a hit with me and I could have eaten more. My favorite was the hushpuppies - perfectly fried and full of corn flavor. I learned from Tanya C long ago to dip them in tartar sauce - their tartar sauce was good, but very pickley. What was a total winner was the honey mustard - they need to package and sell that stuff. I ended up dunking some of my chicken in it - it was crazy addictive. There is something to be said for enjoying fried chicken, in Augusta, under a photo of Arnie at the establishment who used to make the famous fried chicken sandwiches for the golf tournament. By the way, I happened to be wearing a Masters t-shirt at the time. I should have had tea and lemonade in my cup and it would have been the perfect send off. I texted August native Andria C. for some suggestions for grabbing something. Wife Saver was at the top of the list so there you go. I ordered a few chicken strips with a side of mashed potatoes (no gravy) and fried okra. I was torn on my bread portion so I went with hushpuppies and got a biscuit as well. They were nice enough to throw in the biscuit at no extra charge. I picked up a bottle of honey mustard for my chicken and tarter sauce for my hushpuppies (don't knock it til you try it). All of the food came out hot and plentiful. The chicken strips were nicely cooked and not too greasy. I poured out some honey mustard and just about died. Their honey mustard reminds me of my favorite honey mustard from my hometown in tiny Demopolis, AL. It's freshly made and is the perfect mixture of mayo, mustard and honey. I ended up dousing everything in that honey mustard. The tarter sauce was a bit too relishy for my taste so I ended up dipping my hushpuppies in the honey mustard. I have been going to this Wife Saver since it opened and they have always served good food and friendly service, until the last couple of months. I have been 4 times in the last couple of months and every time the people were rude and act like they are the doing me a favor taking and filling my order, which when I get home is missing an item or has the wrong item. The food is just okay usually the tops on the containers are not put on correctly so it has spilled out in the bag. Today was the icing on the cake, it took 32 minutes to get my order and when I asked for sauce I actually got an eye roll!! Mr Benny would be so disappointed. read more

Ehhh, I don't know if I get it. This place is heralded near and far for fantastic fried eats, and my meal was just lackluster. Admittedly (and this is why 3 stars rather than 2), we took the food home and reheated it a few hours later before diving in, so that could easily be part of the cause of the sad eats... but just a part. The flavor just wasn't there. As advised by locals, we got the chicken strips which to me tasted like your generic run of the mill chicken finger. I'm pretty sure I'd rather have ChickfilA. Then, the mac and cheese was just kind of soggy and tasteless: nothing I'd remember, much less imnmortalize. Green beans were green beans, cornbread was not buttery enough, and hushpuppies were pretty awesome. Now, what this place is is CHEAP. We got 16 chicken strips, two sides, rolls, cornbread, hushpuppies, and a medium order of banana pudding for (get this!) $25. Try beating that. Even for a smallish town like Augusta, I can't imagine this being as good as it gets. But if you're looking for a quick meal and you don't mind the state of your arteries once you're done, it's a decent choice, I suppose. read more

We have ordered take out from the Wife Saver's restaurant on Washington Road for years and always loved it. But today we ordered two pork chop dinners with Mac n cheese, turnips and cornbread. It was AWFUL. The pork chops were end cuts with nothing but bone. They were covered in a greasy batter, which indicates the cook didn't even take time to drain the meat. And the cornbread appeared to be soaked in the grease from the chops. The greens were tough and tasted stale. If we had not been in the drive thru and had seen the food before we got home we would have returned it. The owner should be ashamed!! We were afraid we'd have a heart attack if we ate one bite! Such a shame to allow the Quality of the food from this old favorite restaurant to deteriorate to such a low level. Do yourself a favor and don't eat there! read more

My ratings: I ordered a 3 veggie plate with a desert and corn muffin. It was my first time there. Service = A+ The person at the drive through was pleasant and took the time to help me figure out what I wanted. Very good service. Food = C - The food, on the other hand, was not so good. The turnips and beans were from a can. The broccoli casserole was from scratch and was very good I must say. The banana pudding had been refrigerated for some time and appears to have been packaged and not home made. The cookies in the banana pudding were very moist with no crunch. The other ingredients were not very good. Overall the food was decent, but coming from a family of women that can cook, I was not impressed especially with the canned good items. The corn muffins were horrible. They were not warm and were crumbly and too firm. Clealiness - I didn't go inside so I don't know how it looked inside, but my food appeared to be clean and nicely packaged. Time - I went around 3:00 so no one was in the drive through.
