The ambiance was great! We sat outside and there was live music that we really enjoyed. Service was a bit slow for not being too busy. We got the sushi and the fish tacos. The sushi was very good and the fish tacos were cooked really well, they were just a little bland. Yellowtail jalapeño was definitely our favorite thing we got! A girls' beach day in Avalon called for some serious eats. A friend had suggested Whitebrier (WB). We got to the beach early so we got to WB right as it opened at 4pm. They have a wonderful outdoor seating area as well as an indoor fine dining area. We chose the outdoor (under an umbrella) spot. We were starving and so we ordered the wings (buffalo), muscles in white sauce, and truffle fries. The fries come in different varieties and they were crispy (just how I love them). The wings were ok but the muscles were better. They offered two slices of garlic bread which were used to soak up the wonderful sauce and to enjoy. The service here is ok. Keep in mind its the summer, the high school/college kids are home, and so they are the ones who are working the restaurant. They aren't the best at service, but I'll chalk that up to being young. What I will say is this is obviously one of the few "hip" spots in town because by the time 6pm hit the place was B-U-S-Y. Everyone was off the beach and at the bar. read more

I'm giving 1 star after my experience last night. I won't be returning here, which is a shame because I did like this bar. Very poor management. I was getting a casual drink with my uncles and cousin and we had just been served at the bar. we took the drinks we just ordered to go sit down outside at a table and hang out. A minute later this lady who worked there started yelling for everyone to leave because they were closing. She shouted that she wanted to go home. All of the employees then continued to yell at people to get out because they are "tired and want to go home". That is awful management and makes your bar look really bad. My uncles nicely asked if we could at least finish the drinks we just got served, and the employees said "drink it on the street or chug it, just get out of here". There were cops on the streets and nobody wants to chug their drinks they ordered to enjoy. There was no "last call", there was no 5 minute warning AT LEAST, there was no talk of a closing time or anything until these employees rudely forced everyone out of the bar. They said "you have 30 seconds to get out!" We ended up having to chug and leave, leaving my cousins, uncles, and myself extremely disappointed on our last night of vacation. We will not be returning to this bar and neither will any of the people who witnessed this because everyone most likely ended up at the Princeton and spend hundreds there instead. Go here for blueberry lemonade! Ordered surf and turf which was filet and a crab cake. The crab cake was overly seasoned and not in a good way so I did not eat it. My steak was ordered medium but came out well done and it was so tiny...maybe 3/4ounces? The sauce on top was great but could have used more because the meat was so dry. I have been here several times and it is a great restaurant for happy hour and apps! The employees are strict about having masks on when you're not at your table so be sure to have one in order to enter. There are also lots of street spots for parking. The restaurant is known for their truffle fries, and they are AMAZING (so I highly recommend). I also saw every table around me get sushi and it all looked fresh, yummy, and a large enough portion to make you feel full. My friends and I got the truffle fries and pretzel and cheese apps and they were both delicious. Between the five of us, there were still leftovers. PREPARE TO RECEIVE THREATS IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THIS BUSINESS!!!!!! This place is not what it used to be years ago. I had a bad experience last year where the waiter was MIA the entire meal. At the end after asking a different waiter for the bill, he comes out saying how he was having personal issues. Well, we saw him the entire time serving other tables, but never coming to ours so what does his personal issues have to do with our table not being served? A year later, my friends dragged me back here even though I told them it is awful. We HAD THE SAME SERVER, And he was just as slow and non-existent again! We had to ask somebody else for the check again! I wonder what his excuse was this time? According the the threatening messages, he lost someone. Do people expect customers to know that? The only thing customers see is this guy providing bad service 2 years in row. Any event, somebody affiliated with this establishment has rudely messaged me on yelp and sent threats. This should immediately be addressed by management and should probably be addressed with the authorities. I have attached pictures of the messages to this review. This is just humorous to me at this point because not only is the service poor there, but people are actually defending the horrendous service and not addressing it properly. Advice to the business: take all reviews as a learning experience. No business is perfect. Nobody is perfect. It is nearly impossible to always receive 5 stars. Businesses should take advantage of negative reviews to improve on the business and fix the problems INSTEAD of defending wrong doings. Pathetic. It's honestly a damn shame when you've been coming to an establishment for so many years and all of a sudden you get treated like shit. Every time I order takeout the hostesses can never hear what you're trying to order because where the calls are coming through is literally right by the Mermaid Room where music is blasting & drunk people are screaming so all you get is the person on the other line saying, "Ummm can you hold on a sec? It's so loud" Then you're usually kept on hold for 3 minutes, but not actually on hold, just the phone being placed down while overhearing the hostesses talk about their Instagram posts. This has happened all summer of 2021 for me, so my bad for going back & hoping for change. Tonight in particular since they couldn't hear me over the phone for my takeout order I physically went there to place my order. They were out of 3 of the 5 items I was hoping to order. That's fine, it happens. I was told 25 mins & left to make a stop at Wawa & came back about 35 minutes later only to be stopped at the back entrance which I originally went through to make my order & the girl was sitting on a chair on her phone & RUDELY said, "Ya can't come this way, gotta walk around the building to go to the front. Door is locked." And she went back to her phone. I said, "Number one, the door isn't locked I can clearly see it's open, number two I'm only here to pick up my take out food which I ordered a half hour ago. No reason for me to walk all the way around the building when my food is right there clearly visible on the hostess stand." She literally scoffed at me, rolled her eyes and told me to stay put as she walked through the 'locked doors'....but sorry, I'm not going to be your little minion. So I followed right behind her even though she tried to close the door behind her in my face & as I saw her go up to the hostess or hostess manager she whispered in her ear as if trying to check if I was really there to pick up food or 'sneak in' the back. Bitch, I'm 40 years old! I'm just picking up food! Not trying to hang out with a bunch of drunken 20 year olds twerkin to Nicki Minaj! I got my food, paid for it, left a tip although I regret it now, and as I walked out the girl stared me down like I did something wrong! If I wasn't a grown ass woman that lacked class, things probably would've been different. It's truly a shame because I've been coming here for MANY years, I bring my family & friends from out of town because the ambiance & food seems to be steady & positive. The 2 things that have declined tremendously in the past year or two are the young HOSTESSES attitudes, lack of care for the paying customers & the BOUNCERS (who are OVERLY AGGRESSIVE & GROTESQUELY FLIRTATIOUS). And I'll have to add in management because MANY people I know that have had similar complaints have requested to speak to a manager & there's been ZERO follow up. The 2 items that I ordered for takeout were delicious so I give kudos to the chefs. But that is all. Staff were so boring & inattentive. If anyone that works at Whitebrier reads this whether it's staff or management, I suggest that you speak up and do some work because little things like stated above turns many people off & word of mouth is key. I won't be coming back until I actually hear from legit sources that things have changed. I'm sure you think, "Oh well, that's just one customer writing a bad review" but you'd be very wrong. EXTREMELY rude hostess. I've never experienced such poor treatment from a hostess at any restaurant. I would recommend an etiquette course for customer service. The first person you speak with at a restaurant should not be rude and entitled. Instead, they should be presentable and friendly and not openly say out loud "this place is a shit show" in front of *potential* customers. I left after this introductory experience. Half the servers had masks half didn't. Zero social distancing efforts among tables. They're set up the way they always have been every summer prior to COVID. Guy behind us was 3 feet away max. We wore masks. There was literally only one other table where patrons carried masks into the restaurant and wore them. Everyone else seemed to be oblivious to the pandemic. And no NJ is not supposed to be open as usual. Stopping in here you'd think it was 2019. That may appeal to many of you. Not me. Had it not been empty when I arrived, I never would have walked in. Thanks to Denise, our server, for a great dinner. This place is such a nice spot to sit outside for dinner. It's a shame that is gets so rowdy with the young, drunk yuppies in pastels shorts on the weekend. Even for a 7:30PM reservation, it can be difficult to hear your server and for them to hear you. I highly recommend the coconut shrimp and shore summer salad. Most of the apps are good for sharing for 2-3 people. The calamari is a huge serving for upwards of 3 people. They have a long list of sushi for you to choose from so this makes for a good place to try something new! They make some great sushi. Full bar so bring your drinking pants. But please leave your pastel shorts at home. read more

My daughter was married in September at our home in Avalon NJ. We hosted 120 guests for cocktails and dinner. It was magical and a night my daughter will never forget. After this reception we hosted a second reception at the Whitebrier in Avalon. In addition to the 120 guests at our home we added another 150 to celebrate her wedding at the Whitebrier. John Tracey, the owner of the Whitebrier could not have been more kind and attentive to this party. My daughter grew up summers in Avalon, which is a beach town in NJ. She has known John most of her adult life. John paid excruciating attention to detail and made sure everyone enjoyed themselves. He provided my daughter with special memories. I could not be more appreciative of his kindness and attention. I would strongly recommend the Whitebrier for cocktails and dinner anytime! read more

Tough night for the Whitebrier. We have a group of 11 and with reservation at 5:30 they had table ready and waiting. Main issue was an order of loaded fries where after having a few off the top we discovered that most of the fries were still frozen. That is a first for me. Then for my main course I ordered a spider roll which is softshell crab. I love the crunchy texture of it in a maki. I would give this spider a D. Most spider rolls are larger than most maki. This was actually smaller. Texture was not crunch or crisp. I might accept this level of sushi during the 1/2 price Sunday afternoon special with a few beers but it just was pretty disappointing as an entree...especially following the frozen fries. To the management staff's credit, they did offer the table a couple of free deserts. I'm not sure if that will get us back to the WB next summer. read more

The sushi is pricy and not that great - coupled with the fact that it sort of sits in the sun and I recommend you avoid it. Moderate as a restaurant, decent as a night club/bar. Stopped in several times over the course of a week in Avalon. Food was very good just pricey. We hadn't tried the sushi, but the restaurant food is probably worth it. The steak & cake I think won the tastiness award from our group. Had a cute Kid's Karaoke in the evening some of the nights, would be worth a stop in for dinner if you've got young ones in tow. As far as nightlife goes, it's not the greatest of dance floors, but they've got cheap beer specials, and the crowd is decent. Good place to go if you're just up for mingling/sitting around on the deck though. Rum bucket is by far the most efficient use of your money drink-wise, it's large, tasty, and relatively cheap. read more

We were looking for a place to eat and decided to check out Whitebrier. Let me tell you, we walked into a full blown party at 7pm. This review really comes from a combo of this atmosphere & staff experience... The atmosphere was unsuspecting: You don't have to wear anything nice, maybe not even at all. Dress code seemed to be MTV spring break status. We walked into the first entrance. The bouncer was so off-putting, we didn't even think he worked there. He didn't greet us, and then his directions to the host stand were very ~intricate~. He really should have made the labyrinth of this place much easier to navigate. We get to the host stand, which was inside the restaurant between the bar area & the regular seating area. All we wanted to do was sit outside, but the host was frazzled (for reasons not obvious to us) and made this process very confusing... We're seated at a table outside, walking through what again, felt like Spring break. We waited at the table without menus for almost 10 minutes before a stare down prompted a waiter to finally come by. This was probably due to the fact that the outdoor seating host couldn't be bothered to look up from her phone for a second. Then, our waiter... where do I begin? He was a nice man, no one could doubt this. But niceness was lost as soon as he told us the specials. We couldn't not laugh as he told us of the steak tartar. That word has never been pronounced in such a way. Dude was excessive in his check ups, until when we actually needed him. Food - got the fish tacos & calamari and let's just say it didn't end well. My friend's sushi portions were very small for the price. We saw some dudes get kicked out of the place which was pretty annoying at 7pm. My last point is really this: where is the entrance? Having been to the Whitebrier a few times before for enjoyable happy hours and sushi specials, our last visit was enough to ensure my family will never be back for dinner. We called ahead on Monday to secure a 7:00pm reservation, only after asking that happy hour was going to be over at that point. We were assured that happy hour (which tends to be loud) ended at 6pm, and that we'd be seated inside as well. We were seated in a booth near the bar, which would have been fine aside from the loud amp that the acoustic guitar singer was using. He was taking breaks, so this was the least of our gripes during the meal. The service however, was simply ridiculous. Our meal took just under 2 hours, with not so much as an apology from our server. For a group of 5 that all ordered cocktails, 2 appetizers, and multiple entrees, I was shocked at how she ignored the table. After waiting 20 minutes for our appetizer to come out, she came by to let us know it would be out in a few minutes and asked only my father if he would like another drink in the meantime. It was another 20 minutes before a runner dropped the food off. We inhaled the calamari (very dry and bland with an odd sweet sauce drizzled on top -- would not recommend) and mussels (good but nothing to write home about) and then settled in for another 30+ minute wait for the rest of our meal. Our waitress came by and acknowledged that the kitchen was backed up, but rather than apologize said "this has nothing to do with me." True as that may be, some water refills and a more considerate attitude would have been appreciated. Meanwhile, since we were approaching 9pm, the restaurant was switching over to more of a nightlife vibe. We would have been long gone had food come out in a more prompt manner, but there we were, trying to eat our dinner an hour and a half after sitting down while Fetty Wap and Big Sean BLASTED from the speakers. I had a sushi roll, which I would only recommend during a special, and the pork buns, which were fine. Stick to WB for happy hour and maybe a sushi special. read more

I've lived in Avalon every summer and have never had such bad service and food. One entree was served quickly then the french fries appetizer and sushi were not served until 45 mins later. It was clear that the fries were forgotten and we never received the edamame that we ordered. It was clear that other tables around us were also waiting around for the server. This may have been the worst meal and overpriced would be an understatement. Party of 5: 1. 2 Caesar Salads with shrimp: 10 whole pieces of romaine with 3 shrimp. No one wants to eat a whole romaine. Terribly boring 2. Steak and cake: zero crab at $40. Probably the worst quality I have had in a restaurant. 3. Sushi is reliable. 4. Salmon dish was good. I was shocked that in one year the food could be so bad and disappointing. To charge those prices for that quality, you should stick to a happy hour menu. The whitebriar this year 2021 has hired security and bouncers placed around the bar at night that cause unnecessary issues by saying Unappropriate comments to women at the bar and issues with guys. We have been going here for years and there was never any issues that justifies security. However their food is some of the best in Avalon. read more

We went to the Motorboat Club portion of the restaurant. We had reservations and were promptly seated, but didn't see a server for over 15 minutes, so we had to let the hostess know. When we finally placed our orders we never saw our waiter again. We had to ask someone for our check. I ordered steak which was fine, but they didn't have any decent wine to go with it. Meh, nothing special about this place. It's great for happy hour when you're down at the shore but that's about it. They have decent happy hour specials for drinks similar to that of other bars in the area. The food is alright but their sushi is way overpriced for what they're offering. Their sashimi is priced reasonably but their specialty rolls are double the price compared to what a normal sushi place would price them at. They also only give you 5 pieces of sushi for their "roll" when normally most places would give you 6-12 pieces depending on the price. The sushi wasn't the best I've had either. Some friends and I hit up Whitebrier for a Saturday happy hour a couple weeks ago. I had been there once or twice before, but that was years ago. Happy hour featured something like a dollar off all drinks. Meh. Regardless, the place was crowded. And when I mentioned this to a friend, she said it was practically empty compared to how it normally gets. Hmm... probably not a place I'd want to be on what is considered a normal night. Honestly, there's really nothing great or terrible about the place, which is why I'm going with an A-OK. The bar that's partially indoors does have a/c, which was great considering it was pretty humid on the evening of our visit. I'm probably just getting too old for this schtick, but I'd be just as happy if not happier hanging with drinks on the deck of a shore house. read more

The worst serviced restaurant I have ever been to. Their soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser was out, I nicely asked that it get fixed (in a middle of a pandemic) to no avail. 2 hours later I see they are still broke and tell the crew, they then have the audacity to come find me holding two hand fulls of soap saying I was wrong making fun of me in the meantime. I then go to the manager and show him what is broke and he agrees what I said is true. After I show some anger to the fact they did nothing to correct the issue and appologize for lying in front of my friends, they kicked me out. Disgraceful and am glad to report them for obviously violating social distance. read more

The Whitebrier is becoming one of my favorite places on the island to both have a relaxing dinner and/or have a crazy night out at. The restaurant is huge with both inside and outside seating. The outside seating is the best at night as long as the sea breeze isn't kicking in. The Whitebriar recently got a new menu this summer and I have tasted a few things on it and it is great. The chef even came out and gave us dessert on the house. The fish is fresh and the meat is cooked very well. The table gets a huge house salad to share. This place even has a SUSHI bar and a big part of their menu is sushi. This is the only place to get sushi on the seven mile island except for this small place on 96th street near DQ that I can't pronounce that sucks and has a minimum spending amount per person. Around 9 pm The Briar starts their entertainment; live music, karaoke, or a DJ. The place really fills up at night with a younger crowd. The outside bar opens up and the bar inside becomes the dance floor. Most people choose to stay outside on the jam packed deck drinking beer and drunkenly bumping into people. I don't know where to begin. Ordered spaghetti with buttered noodles specifically without a meatball because my son's a vegetarian. Our waitress forgets to order his meal, and when it does come, twenty minutes after everyone else has eaten their meal, it has the meatball right on top. Someone did try the meatball, and it tasted like canned dog food. So terribly disappointed because we had come here two years ago and had a fantastic time. I have seriously mixed emotions about the Whitebrier. I used to love this place. It was the happy hour spot in Avalon before it became the ONLY spot for Happy Hour in Avalon. The crowds are suddenly out of control, and the drink specials really aren't that "special" at all. Sushi here is typically pretty good, but the price tag makes me wonder... I know sushi is relatively expensive anywhere, but let me also say I've had by far better sushi for less. Something doesn't quite add up. Moving on - their service is horrendous. 98% of the waitstaff outside wants to be drinking with their friends who are there having a good time, rather than making money and/or doing their jobs. It's ironic because these same people are there year after year, and I'm not sure how management allows them to continue to work there. I guess as long as the Whitebrier is turning a profit they don't really care how their customers are treated. Shore house groups are still going to go for Happy Hour, and Smokers are most def. still going to go there to drink at night since it has a huge outdoor space. Why bother to improve the service? It's just not necessary, right? Unless you would prefer to be appreciated for having spent over $100 on mediocre sushi and a few beers. Call me crazy, but I'm just not interested in being treated like garbage and then having to give them a $20 tip. In Avalon I suggest going ... anywhere else really. We had a mixed experience. Its not a bad family place to go, but I recommend to order something mundane and hope that it impresses. Don't expect well executed dinner. We had two young boys with us and the service was very accommodating. They brought bread right away and gave the kids more than enough crayons to keep them busy and fed. After that the service was just as quick - almost like they knew what we ordered (you know what that means). I had stuffed flounder, my girlfriend had stuffed shrimp. Both were overdone and not great - especially considering the $25/plate price. Others at the table had seafood pasta and it looked better. read more
