Follow the White Rabbit down the hole and things get curiouser and curiouser... Once you fall down the rabbit hole and find yourself far from Portland and part of a time warp in a little town dominated by antique stores, you will find a magical little bakery that happens to serve some of the best sandwiches in the area. But in order to eat one you have to plan ahead. You see, they only pre-make a few sandwiches daily, so quantities are very limited. And once they run out, they are done for the day. So after missing out on my first choice during my initial visit, I called ahead in the morning to pre-order several sandwiches for my tea party and I still wasn't able to get exactly what I wanted. OFF WITH HER HEAD! But the good news is that I've tried all three varieties (turkey & bacon, veggie and roast beef) and you'll be happy with whatever is available. A key component in the sandwich magic is the fresh herbed foccacia bread. DRINK ME: They serve both tea and coffee but with the whole Alice in Wonderland vibe of the bakery, tea really is the thing to order and a pot is perfect for two to share. Just put your watch in your waistcoat pocket and settle in the high back chair for tea and sandwiches. EAT ME: I am a chocolate peanut butter fanatic and for dessert I chose the Nutty Buddy cupcake (chocolate cake, peanut butter mousse filling, and chocolate mousse on top with a wedge of peanut butter cookie). It reminded me a little of Cupcake Jones in Portland since there is a filling inside the cupcake, but this is better than anything I've had in Portland. Mousse trumps frosting. But two types of mousse = bliss. I also brought home a marionberry scone: warm it in the oven and you'll be in heaven. One other note about this wonderful place is that even though Aurora is an exceedingly small place, this bakery is a little hard to find. Once you are on Highway 99, you will pass by all the cute little antique shops and the White Rabbit will be on your left side in the white building as you are leaving town. Once you enter, you will find white rabbits everywhere. Figurines, portraits, stained glass...part of the building displays pottery and photographs by local artists, so there is plenty to hold your attention while you wait for your food. One of their specialties is gluten-free products, so they offer sandwiches, bread and pastries in gluten-free varieties. Although it flies in the face of spontaneity, this is a place where it pays to pre-order since they make everything in limited quantities. Wow! I almost shed a tear this sandwich was so amazing! After years of choking on dry gluten free bread, this gf focaccia was inconceivably delicious! The staff was very friendly and said the Chipotle TBA was the most popular sandwich. I can see, or rather taste, why! My boyfriend had the Italian which was also fabulous! We also tried the GF cinnamon cake donut- LOVE, and the GF mock turtle cupcake- great flavors, but very fragile, and the Marion berry sour cream muffin- very tasty, but I only found 2 berries in mine, wish there were more! I would actually give this place 3.5 stars. The service is great. All the workers are very friendly. The building is cute and quaint...if you are antiquing in Aurora then give this place a try. They don't have an extensive menu and for having the word bakery in the name, there were only a few baked goods available for purchase. The menu is simple. Several sandwhich options. I had the turkey cranberry and I felt like the sandwhich was overwhelmed by how much cranberry spread was put in it. I also ordered an Italian sandwhich for my husband to go - and he said that was pretty great. They use Focaccia bread and it was very good! Great stop on our way to the faire in Salem! A super cute bakery and coffee shop stocked full of little white rabbit figurines. Ordered a latte, and got a naked juice for our daughter. The donuts and pastries looked delicious! They had lots of vegan options as well (I saw a vegan poppyseed scone)! The maple donut bars seemed to be the most popular, they looked generously sized! Our coffee was delicious, not burnt at all, and even when they made mine hot instead of iced, their barista quickly fixed it and made it again without hesitation. Unfortunately the baked goods here are terrible enough to keep me from supporting a local business. Today I purchased two donuts each 3 dollars. Looked good, tasted terrible. They weren't even baked all the way. Doughy and so wet you could barely pick them up without falling apart. For 1.25 you can go to cutsforth thrift way and get a scratch donut that's sickening sweet and actually baked all the way through. Very disappointed in the quality. read more

I have been coming to the White Rabbit for many years. I have to say I was very surprised to read poor reviews of this place. There have been large chunks of the last few years where I have come into the bakery every weekend despite living over 30min away. I have always found the service to be great and the pastries and sandwiches delicious! And trust me, I've tried probably every gluten free place there is within a 60 mile radius of Portland. The atmosphere is very cute and comfortable. They have tables, a couch, books and cards for patrons. Yes, sometimes if you come in the late afternoon, the selection can be sparse, but I wouldn't even begin to consider this a mark off the business, quality of their food or the service. Wow...what a great place. The wife and I had back to back massages next door (yes...off to a great day huh?!) and we got here early so we could grab a bite. They have amazing GF bread and delicious sandwiches. The menu is basic...turkey bacon avo and ham and Swiss/cheddar. But why mess with beautiful simplicity? They knocked the basics out of the park. The place is decently sized with about 10 tables and is warm and quaintly charming. And the service is great. They really make you feel welcome and at home. The best finishing touch was the coffee tho. In a state that takes their coffee seriously this coffee was serious. Full and rich bodied it was delicious!! I ordered a dozen vanilla bean vegan cupcakes for my sister. To be honest, they weren't very good and reminded me of cornbread. I wouldn't recommend them and am upset I paid so much money for something I could have made better at home. On the other hand, their coffee was delicious and the cinnamon roll was yummy as well. Took the family visiting and each had something different: turkey/bacon avocado, turkey/cranberry relish, veggie and Gouda cheese/tart apples/spinach/Black Forest ham, all on fresh toasted focaccia bread. First of all, I am in LOVE with the WHITE RABBIT BAKERY!!! They are fantastic!!! I was SO shocked that no one else has gotten on here to review this business before me. It is the best thing that's happened to this little town, since they remodeled the gas station at the only intersection light (hehehe) Atmosphere: They have a wonderfully modern design inside with strong contrasting warm colors. The bakery is spotted with tiny tables for dining, and even some cozy antique couches to sink into and get lost for a while. They have a shelf full of books and games for cusomer entertainment (I've played one already...guessing what the antique item is in the photo) As if that wasn't enough, they also have a wonderful viewing area in the back for local artists to display their paintings and pottery as well as other items of art. Bakery: OH MY GOSH!!!! So good. I am so thankful for my bosses who have replaced the doughnut runs we used to have, with the White Rabbits delicious muffins, pastries and cupcakes that can make your dreams so sweet!!! The thing that I appreciate most and above all about this location, is the fact that the owners are very aware of food allergies and offer many gluten and dairy free treats. So food allergies??? The béchamel, tart apples, gouda, ham, spinach, olive oil, salt and pepper on right out of oven bread sandwich was superb, $7.50 and well worth it! A very friendly counter gal created an ice tea using Vanilla - from a wide selection of flavors - and it was perfect for a hot day. The remaining bakery items in the case didn't really speak to me, but many were sold out. The Lentil soup looked good and the banana mini muffin with peach center was yummy. Seating could be more comfy, a sofa or two would be nice. Love this little town, this is a must stop. If you're heading back to Portland be sure to cross the river using the Ferry for a different experience. read more

Such a sweet cafe! The menu is limited, but very tasty. The options for dietary restrictions are very helpful when visiting with friends who are gf, veg, dairy free. Parking in the front, delicious pastries and sweets, sandwiches were delicious and beautiful, interior was cozy and had tables for groups and they have a bookshelf of free books where you can find a book to peruse while you eat! ( Hopefully you will follow the suggestion to donate per book to the local library.) It was very convenient to stop here while doing the Canby Farm Loop and it's a great place to eat before wine tasting in the area. Wine tasting opens at 12 or 1 at many surrounding places so this is great for a pre visit meal or to bring with you on your visit to the wineey for an al fresco picnic. read more

Where do I start? I walked in 40 minutes before closing, yet everything was already packed away and they were ready to close for the night. The teenage workers sighed with anger as the bell rang for the door opening. The lady that took my order looked like one of the villains from the cinematic masterpiece, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. She looked flustered as she asked us what we wanted. We had a hard time deciding between the two sandwiches they offer so we had to take a minute to think it over. I eventually just opted for a coffee; I wasn't too hungry. The lady hesitantly took my order and I waited patiently for my white chocolate peppermint mocha. After I got it, I said thank you and made my way back to the car. I took one sip and let me tell you, I'd rather eat a handful of dirt rather than this, although truthfully I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
