Initial seating was in the far back room, couldn't hear yourself think, asked to be removed, ok in the middle room, table for three. Waiter was new and just a bit too familiar and service was ok, but not what I expected. He knew nothing about serving, Food was less than warm, had the seafood combo, the pasta was overcooked, scallops were very small and shrimp, again was cold. Appetizer was ok, chatcuterie board, just thrown together. The wait staff needs training on fine dining and engaging pleasantries and smile! So disappointed, will never be back, terribly over rated. We had a party of 12 and we sat down at 7:30 and didn't get our first round of drinks till 8pm. Appetizers took a solid 30 minutes after drinks even though we ordered apps at same time as the drinks. The second the apps were put down we were then made to order dinner which took even longer. Terrible timing and terrible execution. To me that's unacceptable, especially considering we were going to spend well over $1000. Since I was entertaining clients I complained to the manager early on but instead of the service improving, it just got worse. To add injury to insult, they automatically apply a 20% gratuity to parties of 6 or more so no matter how bad the service is they know they're getting paid so they just don't care. I do not understand the rave reviews about this place. The food was no better than any other upscale restaurant in Wayne, and the service was SLOW as Christmas. The food was over-priced (I'm sorry, a $25 hot dog??). We asked to sit outside (since we brought our dog), and they looked at me like I had 3 heads. I thought this place was sort of known for a dog-friendly patio, but I didn't get that vibe at all. It was a chilly November day, and despite that there were 2 other tables of people on the patio, the staff didn't offer to turn on the patio heat lamps. First off our server was extremely rude and not good at getting the correct food served at the appropriate time . I started with the mushroom soup it was ok . Then I had the black and bllue salad with shrimp . The salad was drenched in dressing the leaves were soggy. We usually love white dog. Tonight was an awful experience. We were there with children and asked to place orders early for them and the waiter told us no. This led to 2 starving and cranky kids. Then, it took over an hour for appetizers to show up. After we went up to complain, even to the manager, they still didn't change their service. We had to hunt down the waiter for water and even the bill at the end. At the end of the night, as we were leaving, I complained again to the manager and he didn't even offer to comp any part of our $300 dinner. The owners have several locations. I've only been to this one. Nice for formal or casual dining. Every thought has been put into ambiance, decor, and dining experience. My wife and I went there at 2:30 on a Wednesday. We each ordered a bowl of soup, a salad and a glass of water. That was it. Bill was $93.00, plus a tip. But it could have been worse, if I'd ordered a hot dog, because on the menu, their foot long hot dogs are $23.00. That is obscene. My tip was not generous. Despite the place being 2/3rds empty, it took them 10 minutes to bring our soup, and then another 40 minutes to bring our salads. We went there hoping for a quick lunch, but that too was a failure. Mine was the Thai salad with cold beef. It was mainly noodles which were unappetizing, some greens and tough beef. I ate less than half of it. AS you may surmise, we will not be boing back. My recommendation? Don't go there unless someone else is paying the bill, and expect to leave hungry. read more

It has a really cozy atmosphere in the "library" room, with couches and upholstered chairs for seating. I had been wanting to stop in for a while now because their menu looks good. Our experience was not good at all. Our reservation was at 7:30 and we didn't get sat until 8:00. The service was so slow, the waitress was nice but hardly checked on us and we were in the back corner of the restaurant next to a broom closet. The bread basket and Parmesan truffle fries were the best part of the meal. It took over 45 minutes to get our entrees and they were sub par. The ambiance of the restaurant was okay but it was so hot inside it was overwhelming. Also the manager was at the host stand the whole time talking to the hostess and it was borderline creepy that he wouldn't leave her be. This did not live up to the expectations I had or from other people who have told me positive things about it. I will not be returning. read more

We came here for brunch a couple of weekends ago. Fortunately we were seated in the lovely room with a very country-like decor. It was perfect for us because we had a round table in the corner and it was a bright day. The food was SO good. We shared the cheese plate (had to ask for extra crostini) and coffee cake. They were both awesome. The coffee was also delicious. For food, we tried the eggs your way plate and the eggs, potatoes, bread, and bacon were very good! He often spoke over his shoulder making it hard to hear what he said. When pouring water, much of it went on the carpet and water streamed off the glass onto the table when he put the glasses down. Speaking of glasses; since when does an upscale restaurant use ball canning glasses as water glasses? And when does an upscale restaurant not put ice in their water? Finally the coffee was served lukewarm. One would think they could use thermoses to keep the coffee hot; but they use steel coffee pots which no doubt ensure the coffee cools rapidly. White Dog Cafe is a very solid farm to table restaurant that has tasty food, friendly staff and an enjoyable ambiance, so everything you need for a great meal! Definitely a great spot to grab brunch or dinner with a small group. The décor is really unique and awesome. There are 5 different dining areas, all with their own style. The rooms can range from the swanky main dining room with dark wood trim and painted dog portraits to a room that is rustic and feels like you are transplanted to a homey dining room out in the countryside. The food is all sourced from farms in a 50 mile radius, so the menu changes each season. My favorites were the Kennett Square Mushroom Soup (super smooth but could deal with a little less truffle oil), the Pork Chop (extremely juicy) and Trout (cooked amazingly and anchovy sauce makes it uniquely savory). Also notable is the Spicy Lamb Bolognese, which worth a try! The desserts were all tasty but just know they're on the small side. read more

I've been here three times and all can be summed up as "meh", largely based on the completely inattentive staff. The food is pretty decent, apps in particular. I've really enjoyed their soups, the hummus, and tuna tartare. The entrees are more hit or miss. Neither my wife or I took home leftovers today (lamb bolognese and shrimp scampi). The decor is hit or miss depending on your tastes. I happen to like the dog theme and the darker ambiance but everything does come across as a bit dated. As mentioned to start though, the service is terrible. If you're not the kind of person who will actively flag down a staff member when you need something you're not going to have a good time. Also, I'm not sure at what point they started doing it, but they're charging a 3% surcharge for using a credit card. This type of fee doesn't sit well with me. Taking a CC is a cost of doing business. If you can't keep the doors open without a fee, raise your prices. It's unrealistic at this price point to expect customers dining to have cash so they're effectively skimming on every single order. Been to White Dog a few times over last couple of months. We throughly enjoy their great squash soup and their burger is pretty good. Why only 4 stars? First they add $2-3 per extra on their $24 burger - and of course when my souse removed 3 things and added 2, there was still a $5 upside charge ($3 for a quarter of an avocado?). We used to love the White Dog Cafe. When this one first opened in Wayne it was just as good as the one in U. City. The Haverford location was awful but at least we could count on the Wayne location to live up to expectations. Until yesterday that is. The service was excellent. Waitstaff couldn't have been more attentive and on top of things. Granted, we were one of only 5 or 6 tables at 1PM in the afternoon, but it was still excellent. I can usually work around mediocre service but it's hard to work around mediocre food. My husband and I both got the mushroom soup and it was okay but would have been better served with a roll, which I believe they used to do. At least that's what my photos indicate. I had an omelet with home fries and the potatoes were loaded with grease and way too salty! Saltier than my husband's truffle fries, which he couldn't eat. The fries they used to serve were plain fries (maybe double fried) but these were truffle fries and they had too much "stuff" on them. No delicious plain fries anymore? My home fried potatoes looked like they had been left over from an earlier time and reheated - in a pot of oil. They were disgusting. The potatoes I have had there before looked and tasted like potatoes - these looked like shriveled up dregs and I couldn't even taste the potato because of the grease and salt. The omelet was okay but the type of goat cheese they used was too overpowering for the other ingredients - and no toast. They serve a "Farmers Plate" for weekend brunch that I have loved in the past, which has fried eggs, bacon, home fries, AND toast for $15 - which is what I paid for just an omelet and home fries! So where's the toast?! There was no bread of any kind offered (except with sandwiches) and yet the prices were ridiculous. It felt like a ripoff - like they took away the details that add to a meal's enjoyment and jacked up the price. We could have had a better meal at a good diner and paid $20 or $30 instead of $70. My husband got an avocado BLT and didn't notice that it had an egg on it. It fell apart almost immediately. The flavors were okay but if he had noticed how overloaded it was he would have ordered something else. It was grilled in way too much butter which added to the overload of flavors. Maybe they have a new chef. If they do he or she is way too heavy-handed with the food. I like for my food to taste like what it is, not obscured by a lot of added flavors - and especially not overly salted! Under Judy Wicks' stewardship this would never happen. She understood the art of making food taste great through simple preparation. Like Alice Waters' food, you don't mind paying high prices when everything tastes delicious. Salt is not delicious; it is only meant to enhance, not kill flavors. If Judy has eaten here recently she is very likely reconsidering her decision to let them keep the name because it no longer represents her vision. There are too many good restaurants to choose from and I am sorry to say that I think this one is in decline. We will have to think hard before going there again. read more

White Dog Cafe is a stellar restaurant at all times, but having breakfast here is such a treat. Free sangria/mimosa refills on weekend mornings? Yes please. All I need to balance that out is a steaming cup of joe and a ton of mouthwatering options. Can't go wrong with a stack of fluffy, maple bacon and glazed pear pancakes. We also ordered a salad, omelet, and quiche tart, and topped brunch off with blueberry and coconut sorbet. If the name wasn't a dead giveaway, the restaurant decor and dog bone sugar cookies in my photos aptly point to the roots of its canine inspiration. The venue has multiple rooms with different color schemes and lighting, with the same overarching theme. During the day, it certainly resembles a cafe in certain places, but at night, it transforms into an elegant, romantic setting with floating mason jar lights and warm ambience. Wearing nice date night clothes wouldn't be remiss. Waiting staff are always very helpful and personable. They know almost everything about the menu, and what they don't know, they've always been very prompt at finding out. Just bear in mind that at peak hours, the restaurant gets crazy busy and a little patience is needed. Wayne has tons of amazing hole in the wall restaurants, and this place is one I reserve for special occasions. Went to WD to celebrate a birthday. We all agreed, we've had better there. Food was ok, though the trout dish which was to come with Brussels sprouts, had one Brussels sprout shaving. One expects better than ok at WD. It was as if no one checked what was coming out of the kitchen. it was not a terrible meal, but far from what one might expect at those price. Truthfully, Minella's diner, a quarter mile away, (which has great diner food) was an equivalent experience. Service was excellent at WD. We loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. The decor is interesting snd unique but it was so dark that I saw people using their phone flashlight to read the menu. I almost pulled out my flashlight honestly. The service was great. We did have a reservation and were seated quickly. Our waitress was nice and stopped by to check on us. My husband and I both ordered cocktails that we unfortunately didn't love. I got the tea that comes in a can. It just tasted like unsweetened tea. We ordered pork bao buns and Brussel sprouts as appetizers. The buns were great but we didn't love the Brussel sprouts. They weren't as crispy as we expected and come covered in arugula which we didn't love. The sauce on them was lovely though. For dinner I ordered the lamb bolognese and my husband got a burger. The highlight of the burger was the truffle fries. My dish was pretty good. I liked the sauce and it was a large portion so I had enough to take home leftovers. Great brunch even in the midst of lockdown/pandemic. We got seated outdoors, 'inside a tented patio'... Enjoyed their Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, fresh and tasty. Kenneth Square Mushroom soup is undeniably delicious every visit, highly recommended. Bread & Butter plate, very generous swirl of honey butter, tons of roasted garlic...yum! Spicy Lamb Bolognese is heavenly sumptuous, not gamey at all. Eggs Benedict is fine, nothing special. Finishing off with an Olive Oil Cake, all happy...! Tables are spaced fine, but personally I think a tiny adjustment of 1 foot away from the next table would be best. It's a shame that our go-to spot for happy hour has become so pretentious. We had already ordered several drinks and food. When we made our order for a second round of drinks at 6:02pm we were informed that happy hour pricing was over. I asked if they could make an exception for my ONE drink.
