Front (outside) of the store has about 4 tables, the backside however has a bunch of picnic tables. ~Teas flavors are shown along with the herbal remedies they assist with. (ie: immunity, allergy, etc) Breakdown: When we arrived there was only 2 ladies up at the counter. The place was empty; turns out we arrived just after the breakfast rush. We were greeted by a sweet girl who was both cook & server. Robert got a special Athens Georgia; sage sausage, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, onions and feta cheese. He absolutely loved the seasoning in the sausage. I manage to steal a bit and boy oh boy, it was tasty! I got the homemade corned beef hash, 2 eggs and toast ($8.95). The corned beef was more "beef" tasting, rather than the "corned process" (the whole salting and soaking ordeal) . If that makes sense? Robert really lucked out and got the better of the two. Had an amazing lunch here today, the had a Cajun chicken sandwich that was no lie, one of my favorite sandwiches ever! Paired that with a locally foraged mugwort tea and it was soooooo delicious. The owner is extremely friendly and we spent an extra half hour just telling stories. Great food, great service. Do yourself a favor and go here. read more

We live about 40 min away and ventured out this morning to try a new breakfast place. This place is quaint and offers a variety of eclectic teas. The food and drinks were ok. My reason for only two stars is because of the attitude of the woman that runs the place. She was very apparently training a young man who was our waiter. I honestly couldn't believe how far up his ass she was the entire time we were there, critiquing his every move, even telling him he "didn't have time for that" when he stopped to take a bite of his own breakfast behind the counter. She scolded him for the way he cracked an egg, sarcastically let him know that she knew that he had changed the radio station, kept telling him to hurry up, etc. I just didn't really like listening to this the whole time. We went for breakfast in the Summer. It was extremely hot and the tables didn't have any umbrellas, so that was unpleasant. Then it took an incredibly long time for the food to come out. We had our two young children with us. I took them for a walk down the street. Then I finally said please just put the food in to go containers because we can't sit here any longer waiting. My wife and I visited on a quiet Wednesday during lunch hour. We were in the area meeting with a realtor and had some time before we met her. Luckily, it was off season and during the week because I've been told this place packs them in and there is a line out the door. There is so much to love about this little, quaint, and old fashioned mom and pop eatery. I had the cinnamon bun French toast with a side order of sausage and my wife had the spinach, mushroom, and swiss cheese omelette. It came with a grilled potatoes and 2 slices of cranberry nut bread. My French toast was excellent. It was one large cinnamon bun sliced in half and grilled perfectly. It was sweet and tasty and no need for syrup. The medium sized sausage patty was cooked fresh and worth it. My wife loved her omelette. I had some of her potatoes and they were seasoned and not greasy. As coffee snobs, I would say the coffee was good. There is counter seating as well as several tables to enjoy your meal. During the nice weather, there is seating outside as well. The restrooms are outside and around the back. This adds to the overall experience. They offer numerous specials and specialty teas that are beneficial for your health. The two employees that worked acted as hostess, waitress, cook, busgirl, and cashier. They did it all to perfection. Prices were very reasonable. Portions were generous. Parking is on the street. They even sell Whistle Stop memorabilia which allowed us to purchase 2 coffee mugs. Make sure you check their hours before you head over since they closed at 1:30 on the day we went. Pretty much the only breakfast game in town and well worth it. Fresh, quality ingredients with exceptionally friendly service. The locals were out in force on a Sunday morning; the weather was nice enough, so we sat in the tables they placed in front and it felt like we had our own private portico for brunch. I enjoyed the "Southern Discomfort" omelette (opting for egg whites), a combination of hot sausage, hot/sweet peppers, and onions along with perfectly prepared toast. The breakfast potatoes were a bit well done. When we asked for hot sauce, we had a choice of "hot" or "wicked hot," and were glad we chose the latter -- we were presented with 3 bottles, all of which were habanero level of spice. We even met the chef, who introduced herself to us and recommended the specials. If I ever find myself back in Deep River, I'll be making a stop here for sure! read more

Small interior dining area/counter and picnic table seating on a covered patio area in back. Menu offers several eggs benny options, omelets, pancakes, etc but what makes the menu special is the freshness and sourcing of quality ingredients and reasonable prices. Easily one of the best breakfast spots in CT, if you're a fan of O'Rourkes in Middletown you will easily love The Whistle Stop and all that it has to offer. Everything prepared is gourmet to the utmost extent and there is a wide selection of delectable Egg Benedict options. My personal favorite is the "Neptune" which features poached eggs sitting atop toasted English muffin halves with deliciously seasoned Crabmeat.....all covered in their famous homemade Hollandaise sauce. And that's just a taste of the normal menu.....the Specials are out of this world. A favorite of mine was featured during this past Memorial Day weekend. "Red, White, and Blue Stuffed French Toast" two hearty pieces of French toast stuffed with fresh bananas, raspberries, and blueberries. Topped off with freshly prepared whip cream. Heavenly. Absolutely the best breakfast ever!!! We went here one Sunday morning after reading about it in the Shoreline View and it was even better than they said. They had a very creative breakfast menu, it was very hard to decide what to get. I went with a special - KEY WEST EGGS BENEDICT - and it was amazing!!! English muffin topped with key west blackened tilapia and shrimp topped with sauteed kale topped with poached eggs topped with a delicious holandaise sauce! I really can't get any better in my book. My husband was in the mood for a corned beef hash and they even had this in the form of eggs benedict. This place really is a little gem of a restaurant. If you are passing through Deep River Connecticut, keep your eyes peeled for the Whistle Stop Café. It is well worth a visit. My first impression was that the menu had some of the most unique offerings I have seen in quite some time. For example, at the staff's suggestion, I ordered the Green Sausage Benny. It was described to me as an eggs benedict dish; however, I found it to be so much more than that. Two eggs served on an English muffin topped with hollandaise is to be expected; but, add sun dried tomatoes, peppers, and of course the green (spinach) sausage and you get an explosion of flavor that blends perfectly. Served with lightly seasoned, but very tasty home fried potatoes, the portion was filling, while leaving me with a desire for more. To sum things up, I don't believe my review can do justice to the meal I had (Yes, it was that good). Needless to say, I'll be back to try their other offerings. read more

Breakfast: Forest Benny This is a 12 on a scale of 1 - 10! This meal has the wow factor! My son who has dined internationally all over the world told me this breakfast was the best breakfast meal that he ever ate, so we, his parents had to try it. Absolutely delicious! And...We both agree - the best breakfast we ever ate as well! Quaint little place, very friendly owner.
