They fry your hamburgers on a flat surface grill right in front of you!! The menu is simple but to the point. The burgers are small, but DELICIOUS!!! You have options to order a single, double, or a triple! There's also a special burgers with a twist! For example, the burgers adding bacon or ham. They also sell hot ham and cheese! Oh! They have grilled cheese sandwiches as well! A nice comfort sandwich! Some of their burger names are: Pig "N" Bull, Sow "N" Cow, or the Farm! No french fries! They do sell chips and sodas. Overall, a FANTASTIC experience! The ladies cooking the burgers as we waited chatted with us. They were very friendly and made us laugh! While this place is small, it is well worth the trip! Having ended up on Route 66 (almost) entirely by accident while driving from North Carolina to Colorado, I stopped in Carthage, Missouri, to spend the night. Around the corner from the motel I was staying in, I discovered Whisler's. After reading about this place on a Route 66 website, I expected a parking lot where people dined in their cars. Something like Daly Burger in Dearborn, MI, or El's Drive-In in Morehead City, NC, but that was not what I found. This joint sits on a corner lot barely big enough for the building and a few picnic tables outside. Now I knew why they encouraged calling ahead, but I didn't mind waiting and they were having a slow day so parking was not a problem. I enjoyed chatting with the woman working while she cooked my order. I had a Sow 'N' Cow (a burger with bacon) and a Farm (a burger with ham and bacon), both with cheese. She told me the burgers "only" come with ketchup, mustard and pickles. I told her that would be perfect. They offer potato chips but anything as fancy as fries or onion rings is out of the question. But that's okay because this place is all about the burgers. The best burgers are almost always the simplest burgers and that is exactly what you get here. Fresh and juicy with the perfect amount of seasoning, these will have your mouth watering before they are even off the grill! It is not surprising that this place has been selling bags of burgers since the glory days of the Mother Road. If you find yourself driving down Route 66, be sure to stop in Carthage for some of the best burgers you will ever find. You will not be disappointed. read more

An iconic burger joint in Carthage - and definitely a must-go! Whisler's has been open since 1953 and I can see why they are still thriving. Delicious made to order burgers that are as addicting as you've heard about for decades. For those unaware, Whisler's is this tiny little building. They only serve burgers and chips (no fries). The burgers are on the small side - 2oz - so order more than normal. I got 3 of them and was full but not grossly stuffed. The Pig 'n Bull is a burger with ham on top The Sow 'n Cow is a burger with bacon The Farm is a burger with both ham and bacon Or you can get just a regular burger. We tried the regular, the ham and the bacon. Out of all 3, I just preferred the regular. There's just something about a good old fashioned classic with cheese. I don't know if this restaurant is normally open on the inside for seating, but it was closed due to COVID. You order at the outside window and there are picnic tables if you choose to stay and eat. They are EXTREMELY busy, so calling ahead makes the most sense. We did not, and it took 17 minutes to get our little bag of burgers. They were absolutely worth the wait, though! Also - they do take credit card now. And strangely enough, as much as fries go with burgers like peanut butter goes with jelly - you don't miss the fries. These burgers stand on their own. We have only been in the area for about a year and we have not found no hamburger places that is considered a mom and pop shop until we found this place only downside is they don't have fries they have chips but the hamburgers are great. Friendly staff are very fast and can talk while cooking so be friendly. This is a great little place to pick up and take home or enjoy the outdoor seating if the weather is nice. Just a perfect little 'hole in the wall' you'll be delighted with. The menu is simple. Burgers. Plus a drink and some chips for a side if you wish. These burgers are the smaller slider size, so how many can you eat? They are juicy and greesy so you can probably eat lot, they are so delicious. Said he had never been there, but heard it was pretty good. That's all I needed. I pretty good burger is OK with me. I grew up in Carthage Missouri which would of course explain one of the reasons why it'so awesome. That and the Town square which hasn't changed in all the years that this planet has been blessed to have me. I was joined on this road trip by Nova of course and my spawn. I hadn't been back to Carthage for almost 30 years because of a series of unfortunate relationships gone wrong. It was unfortunately a funeral that pulled me back to this magical town. It was here that I learned to appreciate the raw power, the beauty, and the Majesty of a severe thunderstorms and the heart pumping adrenaline fueled rush of chasing tornados. It was here that I learned that fire flys are really lightning bugs, cray fish are really craw daddies, and the only acceptable food to serve after church on Sunday is fried chicken. I also learned that the reason God gave us all a butt is that there were times when we deserve a good whoopin' because of the stupid stuff we'd do as kids. But most importantly, I learned, and it still holds true even after being away for 30 years that no one and I mean no one makes a better burger then Whisler's. I'm sure that the spawn had grown tired of me bringing up memories of how my Grandpa just to take me there on Saturdays but his mind would soon be changed as will yours if you ever make it there. We headed over after the funeral and other then the color of the building it was the same as I remember. The menu has expanded but the same is the same. The lady behind the counter reminded me that you used to be able to get 5 burgers for a buck back when I was kid. These burgers are not sliders but they are on the small side. I went for a double cheeseburger and encouraged the wife and kid to do the same. Nova followed suit which amazed me because she never does what I suggest just to piss me off but the spawn did his own thing and went for the "farm". Dearsweetbabyjesus, I felt like I was 10 years old when I took the first bite. Z accused me of culinary child abuse since I had never taken him before and that he found it refreshing that for once one of the stories I had shared with him about my childhood wasn't complete and utter bullshit. One last thing. When she gave us out burgers she pulled 3 small brown bags from under the counter and said "Do you remember these" Bags of candy. Tootsie rolls and dum dum lollipops. 5 stars. Yes this is essentially fast food but look it's a classic place in a really quaint Route 66 town and your money is going to a local family and not some huge corporate conglomerate. They have some unique options not available any place else as well. I had the Pig n Bull which is a hamburger with ham on it. Very tasty. I encourage anyone traveling the area to check this place out. It's a true piece of Americana which sadly the big boys have caused a lot of these places to close. read more

Sadly, I will not eat here any more. First, let me preface this with the fact that Missouri set both new daily COVID case AND death records this week... The employees no longer wear masks while preparing or serving the food, and Whisler's has gone back to having customers pick up their food inside, where social distancing is impossible. Trying to still practice social distancing, I was waiting at the door for an elderly customer to pick up his order, and a teenage with a Trump/Pence shirt walked right past me to enter while telling me "You don't need no mask to eat here!" He then muttered a disgusting insult as he entered the building that I can't repeat in polite company. I was going to wait for him to leave and pick up my order, but a second customer without a mask walked right past me to enter. Two young people, both without masks, endangering the elderly customer already in the store and preventing me from being able to safely pick up my order. Rather than cause a scene and risk being attacked for asking people to please wear a mask, I simply went to another restaurant and safely ordered food through their drive through. Will not be back until COVID has run its course. I probably won't even be back then given the clear lack of caring about their customers' health and safety. read more

Yum! Yum! These hamburgers are absolutely the best in the area. What makes these guys stand out from McDonald's, Burger King, or Wendy's? It's the fact that they use organic beef from cows not pumped up with growth hormones. I am shocked that it makes that much of a difference in taste. They get their beef from Cloud's Meats, which is a local meat processing plant in Carthage. Cloud's Meats in general is pretty popular in the area for it's meats being used in the local restaurants. What makes this even better is that it's real cheap! You can either go to McDonald's and get that kind of hamburger or you can go get yourself a cheap healthy hamburger at Whislers. read more
